611155 flisfrfry The sun shone. It was a fine September morning in 19565 we gathered in the school's auditorium waiting to be assigned our classes. Sixty-four ambitious students, ready to tackle a four year adventure that encompassed the social, cultural and intel- lectual aspects. The first year of our adventure we were divided into two sections. Needing an able leader, section A chose Willie Greene as president of the class with Mrs. Thelma Branch as advisor. Section B chose Delois Spruill as president with Mr. Austin C. Murrell as advisor. The two sections advanced from mediocrity to a marked degree of success under their leaders. We were well-represented in the 4-H Club, Student Coun- cil, Glee Club, Band and Dramatics. Raymond Atkinson, Frank Howell and Walter Battle were outstanding on the Junior Varsity basketball team. Janece Coley was voted Best Supporting Actress at the dramatics festival in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In our second year of adventure we were combined. As we tramped our way through the many adversities concominant with any beginning, we became aware that there were yet fundamentals that we should know. Fred Simmons was chosen President and Mr. Austin C. Murrell, our advisor. As we journeyed down the rugged road to suc- cess, we passed at different intervals that which we had accomplished fortified with one year's experience, we thought we could possibly go on to do greater things. It was in this year that Alice Coley and Nathan Pender represented us in the Student Council, the Sophomore's float won second place in the Homecoming Paradeg Gladys Bowden was chosen as the N. F.A. Sweetheart, and Willie Green won first place in the Oratori- cal Contest at the N. F.A. Federation. Having satisfied our desire for the basic things and gaining tremendous experience, we were now in our third stage of adventure. Mr. Murrell was still our advisor and we chose Janece Coley as our President. Mildred Jackson, Delois Spruill, Carolyn Korne- gay, Rosemary Jackson, Janece Coley, and Willie Greene were eligible for member- ship in the Honor Society. Janece Coley was voted Vice President of the Student Coun- cil and Carolyn Kornegay and Odell Coley were representatives. In the social realm, Shirley Matthews was runner-up Homecoming Queen. Janece Coley, Elna Smith and Carolyn Kornegay were presented to society at the annual Cinderella Ball. We hon- ored the seniors with a very memorable Junior-Senior Prom, the theme was April in Paris, with music by the Bill Walton Combo. We reached our fourth stage of adventure minus twenty-one of the students that had begun with us. Willie Green was chosen as our President and Mr. Murrell, our advisor. Many seniors participated in and held high offices in various clubs and organ- izations ofthe school. Willie Green was President of the Student Council, Shirley Matthews was President of the Glee Club, Carolyn Kornegay was President of the 4-H Club and Rosemary Jackson was President of the Crown and Scepter Club. Raymond Atkinson was outstanding on the basketball team. Shirley Matthews was initiated into the Honor Society CCrown and Scepterj. Forty-two of us attended High School Senior Day at the Agricultural and Technical College in Greensboro, North Carolina. During the summer of 1959 Raymond Atkinson, Howard Rodgers, Janece Coley, and Carolyn Kornegay represented Central at the 4-H Shortcourse at the Agriculture and Technical College. Willie Greene attended the science summer school at Agriculture and Tech- nical College, completing the course with a B average.
