DISAPPOINTMENT AT DISTRICT Coach Leon Brinkopf and his proteges lost only twice in the regular season and allowed their op- ponents a scant average of 2.2 runs per contest. It came as a real shock to see jackson edge out the Tigers by one run in the district battle. Ace hurlers Pat Godwin and Craig Valle shared an e.r.a. of .046 and an overall record of 9 wins and 1 loss. , 2 In the batting department David Proctor led with. 42 hits and a .333 average and Pat Godwin slugged out 41 hits and a .314 average. Right behind were Terry Narsh and Randy Farmer with 11 and 10 R.B.I.'s respectively. All-Conference honors went to Pat and Kim God- win. Proctor and Terry Kitchen were placed on the 2nd team, while Farmer and Valle received Honor- able Mentions. After last year's season, many felt that the Tigers of '69 could not match the record of the Soul Patrol of '68. Twelve returning Iettermen were de- termined to prove how .wrong some people can be. By mid-season the Tigers were rated by the St. Louis Post- Dispatch as the second best squad in Missouri. The season's opener came as a double shock, the Carbondale Terriers learned the hard way that the Tiger's bite is even worse than its roar, and secondly, every- one at'the game was stunned when the last ten seconds brought a fumble and disaster as a Terrier lineman dashed across the goal. If this loss had been averted, the Tigers would have been eligible to compete for the State cham- pionship under the new M.S.H.S.A.A. point system. The gridiron Bengals proved their strength throughout' the remainder of the season by leaving four teams score- less. However, tragedy befell the Tigers at the end of October when Sikeston played their best game and defeated Central. In the final game of the season, the Tigers routed the Perryville Pirates who went on to become Class 3A Champions. Eighteen returning Iettermen and sev- eral promising sophomores will be on hand next year to spark victory. In Coach Lon Wilke's first year as head of the team, his squad was tri-conference champion and rated highly in many of the newspaper polls. With the experi- ence of one year at the helm under his belt, Coach wilke hopes for a crack at the state title next year. Definitely, the Wilke era has started in Southeast Missouri. 7 ' U l-- ulunnu?.'1-ruu1::-a-- ' -.rum - -f if - ' -1--tg., ., .
