All the truly great people in history have excelled be- cause of careful reflection, not merely because of a well timed accident. Before anything worthy can be accomplished, before there can be any utterance of perfection, consideration must be given. Even in the high school and college career, those who surpass mediocrity do so because they have taken time to think. A WORD, whether written or spoken, expresses the initial thought. From the simple sounds of a baby to the flourishes of Shakespeare, each word communicates a feeling, a need, or an idea. Especially in our advancing society, words necessarily are being created to identify the many modern concepts that have become imbedded in American life. A DEED puts the word into action. Deeds have built empires and shattered nations, they have crowned kings and invented paupers. One's deeds, either good or bad, determine the ideas others have of him. A LIFE is comprised of past and future thoughts, words, and deeds. Above all there is a thought, without which there could be no beginning, then a word communicates the thought, and a deed activates the word. The '65 Girardot strives to portray the thoughts, the words, and the deeds that made up the 1964- 1965 school life. 2 1 we , - an All the world? a stage, V And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and ent1anee.i,' And one man in his time plays many parts. swam Shakespeare , M9555 W a'ea'z'catz'0n The 1965 yearbook staff dedi- cates this issue of the Girardot to Mrs. Ruby Davis in apprecia- tion for her guidance in the publication of the six previous Girardots and for her increasing pursuit of the ideals which she reveres. J a Glogz Comes Late in Season Highlights of Central's 1964 football season included both disappointments and triumphs. The rivalry between Cape and Jackson surged to a climax as Central downed the Indians, 19-0. The opening game played against the Chickasaws, of Blytheville, Ark., was a blow to the Bengals, end- ing in a 12-6 defeat. This not being Blytheville's first game, the Chickasaws had an advantage over Central. The University City Indians journeyed to the Tigers, stomping ground for the first home game. Central took an early lead of 7-0, but was unable to main- tain it as U-City scored on a pass play, making it 7-7. Although both teams showed strong defensive play in'the second half, U-City marked up another touchdown, and the score remained 14-7. Central battled Paducah Tilghman to a hard- fought 6-6 tie. One of the most thrilling games was the Tigers' en- counter with the Sikeston Bulldogs. The last 52 sec- onds proved to be the deciding point when the Bull- dogs scored a touchdown, ending the game in a close 20-19 defeat for the Tigers. The highlight of this year's season came in a trium- phant victory over the Perryville Pirates, 20-6. This being the homecoming and final game, the Tigers would settle for nothing less than victory. Executing brilliant plays and coordinated teamwork, Central took an early lead. The second half showed as much determination as the first, as the Tigers maintained a definite advantage and ended the Pirates' win- ning streak. BOTTOM ROW.' The rest of the boys had no previous Varsity experience, so this was a building year and was char- acterized by some inconsistent play, however, the team placed fourth in the conference tournament. During the season the Tigers defeated 15 of their 18 opponents. Starting off with seven consecutive wins and one loss, the Tigers then met Perryville in a contest end- ing in a 4-1 Bengal victory. Although the Tigers met defeat against Jackson and St. Pius, the season progressed and showed the Tigers' true ability, as they defeated Sikeston and seven other rival teams. The Junior Varsity season resulted in a 1-3 record, with their main strength in the pitching and hitting departments. HOUSE An expanding school system demands diligent and unceasing effort on the part of Superintend- ent House, Assistant Superintendent Turner, and the School Board. The board is presently concerned with the renovation of the old Jr. High School and the addition of a new ele- mentary school on Hopper Road. The increase of pupils in this system has necessitated the re- grouping of junior high and high school stu- dents. The freshman class has been resituated in the newly-built Junior High this year, therefore, Central contains only grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The School Board and superintendents are re- sponsible for enlarging the high school curricu- lum to include new academic programs such as Math V, French V, and humanities. They survived being the youngest class for two years, which displayed their in- tense determination, for they had not been slighted. They opened a new era at Central, one free of the confusion of Z1 freshman class. The Class of '67 has shown the dignity a young class can maintain and has made Cen- tral proud to include them. KYUNIOR The mighty juniors composed the Class of '66. Surely these juniors were not tried, but because of it, they approached Central with a new spirit-a great pride. This yearas juniors displayed talents in many fields. Their boys brought pride to the football team as well as in many other sports. Several of their members made National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll. Still others excelled in Forensics and worked hard on the Student Council. These were their leaders. Not to be forgotten were their followers, who stood behind those in the limelight and fought just as hard.
