Always keeping in mind the needs of the community, the administration aids the faculty in assisting the students whom they seek to educate. Many factors contribute to the educational program which Central High School offers. XVe believe the follow- ing to be of major importance: a community which gives adequate financial support and exhibits a dehnite faith in the potential of its high schoolg parents who individually encourage and expect maximum effort and achievement from their sons and daughtersg students who realize the importance of education and who are sufficiently con- cerned that they will take full advantage of their formal school life opportunities, teachers who are dedicated to the responsibilities of their profession who are interested in and considerate of each and every student with whom they come in contactg administrators who realize the need for and who strive to promote a working relationship which embodies mutual understanding and respect among all groups concerned, and a continuing concentrated effort to provide a curriculum which makes possible a desirable program of courses and activities to satisfactorily meet the needs of the individual student. These contributing fac- tors, when implemented to the maximum degree, will result in the real purpose for Centralss existence becom- ing a reality. 5 ' W Principal l FRED M. Not only do they proHt themselves, but they also aid the school. By showing films to the classes, they help the faculty and serve their fellow students. 32 TEXTBOOK RENTAL SER VICE This year Central students are experiencing a new plan concerning the acquiring of text books. In previous years Central students have bought their books, but under this system students rent them. Miss Vogelsang investigated the idea of a rental system and set up the preliminary plans. Mrs. Young, as supervisor of the system, works to keep things running smoothly. Students under the leadership of Mrs. Young work hard to supply the thirteen hundred Central students with text books throughout the year. LEFT, KNEELING: Carol Rawlings, Betty Schleg el Penny Brown. In doing so a strong bond is formed between the school and the community. This year approximately fifty-five students have aided the community by holding jobs in various business firms. The community in turn renders a service to the students by offering a chance for on the job training. COA CHES' COMMENTS The 1962 Central High Tigers, champs of the new Northern Division of the South- east Missouri Athletic Association, was the first undefeated football team in twenty years at Central. In the season's first games, the hard nosed Tiger defense and grinding offense were not noticeable as the Bengals tied the University City Indians O-0, edged the River- view Gardens Rams 7-6, and trounced the Cairo Pilots 81-O. The only blot on the loop record was a 7-7 tie to arch-rival Jackson. Following the Jackson tie, the orange and black machine rolled over five straight division foes to end the season with a 7-O-2 record. Poplar Bluff fell 16-O, Chafiiee was edged l2-6, Charleston was trounced 32-O, the Sikeston streak was broken to the tune 32-O, and Perryville fell at our homecoming 21-O. Our homecoming was highlighted by the play of the entire squad, especially the seniors whose leadership was noticeable all year long. Though many fine players were lost through graduation, it is hoped that next year's seniors' leadership and a wealth of underclassrnen from this season's undefeated freshman-sophomore squad will keep the Northern Division championship in Cape Girardeau. Besides being loop champs, many boys received recognition for their grid perform- ances. Guards Walt Vandivort and Lester Miller, end Mark Headrick, fullback Paul Banks, and halfback Jim Stovall made the mythical first team all-division, while tackle John Ramey, center Jim Rust, end Mike Price, and quarterback Greg Brune made the second eleven. Halfback Joe Metje, who made the third team, and tackle Ken Stallings, who made honorable mention, closed out the Central domination of the all-division elevens. Lester Miller was chosen captain of the all-division first team, while Jim Rust was chosen most valuable lineman in the Northern Division. Rust, Vandivort, and Metje were team tri-captains for the year. 84 CHAMPS 1962 SCOREBOARD WE THEY 0 . . . . University City ..... . . . . . . 0 7 . . . . Riverview Gardens . . . . . . 6 81 ...... Wfith a good offense and an adequate reserve unit which helped to spark the Bengals to many wins in the latter part of the season, the Central basketeers faced a rugged schedule including such powerhouses as Dexter, Fredrick- town, Poplar Bluff, and Farmington. Beginning the season by taking second place in the conference tournament behind Dexter, the roundballers rolled to thirteen consecutive victories. Included in this streak was a double overtime win over Woodland, who possessed one of the best records in Southeast Mis- souri, giving the Tigers the Campus High Christmas 'Tournament title for the second time in many years, a championship of the city series over the Preps and Notre Dame, and a co-championship of the Southeast Missouri Conference with Dexter. Central's only loop loss was to their old rival Dexter who defeated them at the winners' homecoming. The Tiger Cubs completed the year with a 13-1 record, their only loss being a 51-49 decision to Perryville, giving the Cubs a tie for Southeast Missouri Conference Junior Varsity title with Perryville and Poplar Bluff. Individual highlight of the season was Kermit Meystedt's breaking of the school record for most points scored in a single game. He scored 47 points in the season finale against Farmington. Meystedt made second team all-district, missing the first team by one vote, while teammate Gr-eg Neihart made honor- able mention. Both boys obtained first team all-district Class L berths. Victory after victory followed the Tigers to the State tournament final game in Busch Stadium in St. Louis where the Tigers annexed a i2lff2 win over the St. Louis Uni- versity High Billikins. Kermit Meystedt, the starting pitcher, took the relay from hrst baseman Jerry Suedekum for the final out of the big game 3 and bedlam broke out among the Central rooters. The state finals game featured timely hitting led by shortstop Alan Kesterson and centerhelder Floyd King, a tight defense, and the superb pitching of mound aces, Steve Mosley, Kesterson, and Meystedt. Alan Kesterson led the hitters with a .4-39 batting average, followed by Floyd King with 420, Gary Davie with 423, and Bob Nations with 349. The team batting average was 324. Mosley led the Bengal hurlers with a 9fO record, followed by Alan Kesterson and Kennit Nleystedt each with a 4vO record. The 4--2 state finals victory topped a great season for the rawhiders - a season which included twenty-one undefeated games, the Southeast Missouri Conference Cham- pionship, and the state title. After easily winning their District meet, they were on their way. State competition consisted of a grueling 36 holes, and playing conditions were not improved by a blistering 98 degree temperature.
