Phineas Fogg traveled it in eighty days in the l800's, but with a modern jet nowadays it is a matter of hours. The countries of the world are drawn much closer through the bonds of modern transportation and communication into a United Nations. Instead of war with its pain and destruction, how much more could be accomplished through international peace programs in which nations exchange educational methods, agricultural pursuits, scientific marvels, and all other worthwhile things to make this a better world. To all people everywhere who sincerely believe in world peace and who give unselfishly of their service toward a better understanding of world problems, we hereby dedicate this 1959 Central High Girardot. O O 9 Alma Mater I love thee, Alma Mater, Central High Thy walls and halls so dear, Each memory of happy days gone by Brings back glad thought of thee. There are clubs for the music and art lovers, dramatic and public speaking activities, clubs devoted to scientific en- deavor, the languages, sports, photography, and many other fields. Club meetings are held on Mondays and Wednesdays for a half-hour period at the close of the school day. Sponsors devote much time and interest to these clubs, and students who par- ticipate in activities gain much from their efforts. Points to- ward membership in the National Honor Society are given at the end of each semester. Snaps When in Rome do as the Romans do, X53 ,J ,S .L.., ,,,.mr2 Two and two make four. Operation Football 1958 QCoach's Commentsj Central tied two games and lost eight. The team played some good football throughout the season, but had injuries to key men which hurt them a great deal. Some of the older players such as Ray O'Howell missed all but two games. Scott Browning missed some of the action and this was a factor. Central played very well against Sikeston. Bill Boren kicked a 38 yard field goal in this game and Central led them for three quarters and finally lost this game lf?-9. This is one of the few games in which a field goal was kicked from that far out in the past few years. Boren will play two more seasons for Central. Bill Roussel played good ball throughout the year and was chosen as one of the co-captains of the team. Scott Browning was the other captain. Seniors graduating are Ned Amlingmeyer, Scott Browning, Bill Roussel, Jerry Smith, Her- man Johnson, Jerry Clubb, Barry Davis, Joe Medlin. Players making the all-conference selection were Bill Roussel, who was chosen to the third team and Scott Browning, Herman Johnson and Ray O'Howell, who were chosen as honorable men- tions. Central did lack size during this season and should be somewhat larger in the seasons to follow. The over-all line average was 151 pounds, and the backfield averaged 143 pounds. This is rather small in the conference we belong to. We are going to miss the fine pass receiving of Herman Johnson. He was one of the better receivers in the league. One of the bright spots of the year was the inter-squad game. lt was cheering to note that the underclassmen won out over the seniors. This should indicate that the Central team will be a better one next season. The results of the season do not indicate the hard work and effort put forth by the boys on the squad. The coaches were very proud of the squad as a whole and found them to be hard workers. Sometimes it takes a few breaks to get into the winners' column, and it seemed that all the breaks Central got were the bad ones. The season ended with a very fine banquet. Coach Harrison from State College was the principal speaker and at this time letters were awarded to all letter winners. The administra- tion provided the ve ry fine banquet. .Vx 1 'Yagi gf-'QQ Vu- A Y .' ,Q I fff' i?f2fVY,,1 Y s-9 75 F NVQ' ' ' 'Q U , '-Vfiilme VS mjefw fi' , VV L 5' fi , Hifi' ' ,Y wa, V Q -niidf fl K fix Y WNA' F If kxxqiggfffikay 'W V31 - if , ' I ' K. Three of them--Rocky Wilferth, Bill Green, and Herman John- son--were regulars from last year's squad which won 16 games and lost 7. These three, plus Dave Pettigrew and Willie Williams, made up the starting five. Gene Greable, Lewis Bock, and Ronnie Hayden filled in capably in quite a few spots during the season. Of these eight, only Hay- den and Williams will be back next year. The Tigers played three games before Christmas, winning from Cairo and Crystal City and losing to Popular Bluff. Crystal City won one divi- sion of the Normandy Tournament in St. Louis. ln the battle for the city championship with Cape Catholic and College High, Central brought home the trophy for the sixth time in the last seven years. Central competed in the College High Christmas Tournament in Cape and placed second, losing to Advance in the finals 46-44. The basketball team did not do as well in the fight for the Southeast Missouri Basketball Conference title, as Poplar Bluff won the league championship for the second straight season. Counting all games up to the regional Class L tournament, the Tigers won 15 and lost 5 which is a record the school can be proud of. All 1.
