Early in September the third year art class taught by Miss Edna Haman decided as a semester project, to paint a mural on the east wall of the art room. It was to depict the important phases of art work and was to be one complete mural rather than in panel arrangement. Large sketches Qshown in picture abovej were first made and then transferred with carbon to the wall space, which had been painted pale green. Other colors added as work progressed were a darker green, yellow, and brown. These colors harmonize with the colors of the art room. Latex paint was used because it permits washing if necessary. Faculty and students were extended an invitation to View the project at the be- ginning Of the second semester. Operation Football 1957 In the 1957 football season, Central won four games, tied one, and lost five. Bob Tooke, tackle, and Wayne Boswell, back, placed on the second team QDistrict Mystical Elevenl. Dave Hawkins, guard, and Scott Browning, back, won places on the third team. The first game played with Anna, Illinois, resulted in a scoreless tie. Outstand- ing players were Bob Tooke and Dave Hawkins. Wayne Boswell and Don McBride made a good showing in the backfield. In the opening game of the Big Eight Conference, the Tigers romped over the Cairo Pilots Z5-6. They scored four touchdowns without making a single first down. The Kirkwood Pioneers really slaughtered the Bengals with a score of 46-O. The most interesting play of the game was made by Ed Pikes who madea tackle at the 30 yard line to prevent Kirkwood from making a touchdown. In the second conference game the Caruthersville Tigers beat our own Central Tigers 26-6. To defeat the Jackson Indians, the Tigers grabbed an early lead and managed to hold on to it in a score of 14-13: Rallying over the Shawnee, Illinois,Redskins, the Tigers won by a score of Z5-13 Wayne Boswell ran two touchdowns, passed for another, and added the extra point for the final marker. Stopped cold by the Tigers during the first half, the Sikeston Bulldogs gathered their forces and made four touchdowns in the second half for a 28-O victory. By a close score of 7-O, in the final quarter the Bengals bowed to the Kennett Indians in a game played on the Kennett field. In a slow game played at Houck Field House, the Tigers over-ran the Charles- ton Bluejays by a score of 20-O. Central substituted quite freely as 34 Tigers saw action during the last period. The Turkey Day game was won by Poplar Bluff 33-0. 95 Varsity Squad Row 1-Withers, Hawkins, Ratliff, Medlin, Brockmire, McBride, Bos- well, Seabaugh. Well, I finally made it just to dish out my life's savings. But just think, I'm going to be a freshman in Central High School. SEPT. 3-Had our first assembly this morning. Our Student Council President, Kenny Lipps, gave a Very inspiring speech. Then we went through our schedules and was I ever mixedup! That place is so-o-o big! I was late for every class. Will I ever be able to find my way around? I wish those seniors would stop pick- ing on us freshmen. Just wait! Some day I'll be a senior. SEPT. 9-Today starts the first week for clubs. There has been a new one added to the list-the Art Club, directed by Miss 1-Iaman. SEPT 12-Got off at 11:00 today for the fair and guess what, diary? It poured down rain all afternoon. This spoiled the fair, but at leastwe didn't have to go to school. SEPT. 13-Our first football game of the season was a scoreless tie. Bob Tooke and Dave Hawkins were the outstanding players. It was a really exciting game. Both teams fought hard and came close to a touchdown a couple of times. I can hardly wait until the next game. SEPT. 19-Central won her first game of the season. The score was 25-6. This is the first time Central defeated Cairo since 1953. SEPT. 27-Boy! We were slaughtered in the game with Kirkwood. Score was 46-0. Maybe we'll do better when we play Caruthersville. I surely do hope so. SEPT. 30-Martha Stroder was chosen Cotton Carnival Queen at Sikeston. The candidates for football queen have been also chosen. They are Carol Ervin, Martha Stroder, Martha Pierce, Judi Mahan, and Charlotte Young. May the best girl win! October OCT. 4-Our first game out of town was a bad one. Boy, diary, we're going to have to catch those Tigers by their tails and pep them up a bit. The score, if that's what you call it, was Z5-6. OCT. 7-We had our first lyceurn of the year. Chief Morgan was here to show us some judo stunts. He showed the girls some good tricks to use in an emergency. That tall Walter Greb- ing was one of the guinea pigs. He was surely thrown all over that stage along with some other athletic people. OCT. 8-Those lucky band members! They got out of school half a day for the festival at .Tack- son. Don't we all wish we could play an in- strurnent? But we don't all have the talent of Mr. Carosello's band members. OCT, 9-Girardot queen candidates were an- nounced today. The lucky girls are Carol Er- vin, Susan Jackson, Carolyn Lincoln, Karen Wieser, Martha Stroder, and Gail Hazel. May the best girl win! 129 OCT 10-Played our homecoming game with Jackson and won 14-13. The added attraction was the football crowning. Judi Mahan was the lucky lass. There was a dance held afterwards in the Central gyT1'1. OCT. 14- Who hasn't bought his Girardot yet? Get your Girardot now! .These are but a fevs of the posters put in the halls advertising the sale of Girardots. The sellers are out to get a free book. Have you bought yours? OCT. 17-Well, diary, we get out of school today because of teachers' meeting. Mrs. Roosevelt was here to speak and one of our own Central- ites, Millie Flentge, was the lucky one to inter- view her. I surely wish those teachers would meet more often! November NOV. 1-Even though the team fought hard we lost the game with Kennett 7-O. Better luck next time, boys! NOV. 4-Student Council put on a Safety cam- paign this week. Its purpose was to make stu- dents aware of the automobile wrecks. NOV. 8-Z0-Oh, Boy! Some score! Our Tigers were just too much for Charleston. Keep up the good work, boys. NOV. 12-Well, Diary, back to school today after a wonderful vacation.
