FOREWORD One could almost say it came from nothing, for at first there fwfr nothing but a hare held. Huge mounds of earth arose, and then iron beams were raised to stand gleaming in the sun. Through many months, with unwavering faith, we watched as the structure neared completion + our new Central High School Ifzxizfe Cezztmf the clanging of hells can now be heard. Important announcements boom over the public address system. Rushing feet echo in the halls as we pass from class to class. The voices of A Cappella, clicking typewriters, the drone of voices from classrooms, and the hammering of the workmen in the unfinished areas luring an empty building to life. lt is Imizfe Celiiwzl that helps to make the building what x'-...MM it is, and without these things it would truly be nothing. iv 'nv Q10-.gh-,,T1x..+1v4vu., Avg- , nz. , i j , 'N'-:.,,,Na 1, ' 'S '7221:1 ua , 4: 1 t 'Q 5-'!'.',f ,. , - - ., 2' , - '5 i'5r7 he . , ' -'sf Ms ' r. . a 4 , :Y A- at l fi 231 t E F ,. , ' - ' ' 1. t Q -Q E -...,.....,f-.f..,.t., ,,,, l 1 F9 5 6 . Our Work includes the mounting of all pictures and the preparation of the art Work in our year- book. JUDY TEMPLE Art Staff If you have ever planned and worked diligently on something very special for a long period of time, we know you have had that Wonderful feeling of satisfaction and sense of pride when that something was completed, be- cause that's exactly the way we feel about this IQS4 Girardof. The time spent planning and preparing the Girzzrdot was well worth the effort, and we were happy to be working with the Art, Business, and Photography staffs to bring this special book to you. We hope you enjoy your yearbook and can page through its many happy memories in years to come. MARY ANN KELPE Editor-in-chief I consider it ah honor to have been chosen Business Manager for the 1954 edition of the Girardoi. The Bus- iness Staff sold advertising space in the Girardozf to the merchants of Cape Girardeau, which helped to pay the cost of the book. The Business Staff also took subscrip- tions from students and teachers for Girzzrdofs. I have appreciated very much the opportunity of working with other students toward the publication-of our yearbook. It has helped to make my senior year at Central more Worth While. CAROL RUDERT Business Manager I have been on the Girardot Photography Staff for three years, and I have enjoyed it every year. This organ- ization enables those who have photography as a hobby to work on definite assignments. Club pictures, candid shots, and school activities are our responsibilities. Cooking, of course, is the next best reason on my list. Pranks are always taking place such as turning off ovens, using another personis dishes, or eating their cookies. The main disadvantage is that we have to eat what we cook. This really isnit too bad, however. I think that the Boys' Cooking Club is a very worth while club to join. In the past year our club has en- tered the National High School Poet- ry Contest and several members have won honors. We have written in- formal essays, sent letters to a sick member of the club, and played vocabulary and uscribblingi' games together. Coached by Payne Muir, the Central Tigers played some impressive games with six wins, two losses, and one tie. The opening game played at Fredericktown on Sep- tember 11 brought the Tigers home licking their wounds, yielding a 21-15 victory to the Black Cats, but with fine support from Tim Toe Howell, Louis Meisenheimer, and Don Atchison. Completely recovered, the Tigers overpowered the Cairo Pilots 39-0, September 25. Wyatt, Atchison, and Brennecke all made sizable gains, but it was Young who was the sparkplug of the game, Splendid teamwork was exhibited by the Bengals when they romped over the Caruthersville Tigers, October 9, bringing in a final score of 55-6. On October 15, Central greeted their old rivals, the Jackson Indians, ending the game with a score of 32-7, making their third win in a string of conference plays. BIG EIGHT CONFERENCE Championship Tie Central, Sikeston, and Poplar Bluff In the fifth game of the season, much action was seen when the Tigers tied with the Normandy High Vikings. Don Atchison tied the game in the fourth quarter by plunging off a tackle, making the final score 13-13. The downfall of Central vs. Sikeston came when the Tigers were defeated by ten points by the Bulldogs. Through the entire game the Bulldogs led the Tigers, bringing in a score of 24-14. Scoring in every quarter, the Central Tigers roared to a 46-6 victory over the Kennett Indians, with Tim How- ell switching to half-back position and bringing in the last extra point. Continuing to pile up victories Central racked up yet another by defeating the Charleston Bluejays with a final score of 33-0. The Central Tigers closed their football season with the annual Thanksgiving game with Poplar Bluff. The final outcome was 19-6 with the Bengals winning. This made a three way tie for first place in the Big Eight Con- ference between Cape, Bluff, and Sikeston. Victory! Victory! That's our cry! No other sound is more gratifying to a cheer leader than this one. These words mean that the purpose for which she has been cheering has been ful- filled. The battle has been won. Perhaps one of the most benefiting lessons that cheerleading teaches is never to give up. When the team is behind, it needs pep and support more than at any other time. Another im ortant lesson learned from cheerleadin is s ortsmanshi . When the res onsibilit of A h P 8 P P P I Y leading a group is placed upon a cheer leader, she becomes more acutely aware of the sportsmanship - good and bad. These two lessons are the most outstanding benefits that one may derive from being a cheerleader, The most important thing is that they should also be applied in the game of life. Never give up and ac- cept victory or defeat with a spirit of good sportsmanship. JOAN PORTER. RAH! TEAM! FIGHT! ' f M' 1 -yt. BASKETBALL SQUAD .ir 5 Date of Game Dec Dec. Dec Dec Dec. Dec jan. Jan. Do you like to yell and show your enthusiasm at games? Then l'd advise you to join the Tigerettes and have loads of fun. Our other activities include an open house and dance following one of the games, a bonfire and a snake dance preceding the Thanksgiving game, and a bus trip to one out-of-town game. I joined the Tigerettes because I enjoy being with my friends and having fun and excite- ment. KAREN MAHAN I like the Girls' Sport Club because there is certainly nothing dull about it. There is always dancing which I believe should be fun for everybody. Then if you want a change, you can play a game of ping-pong. When the new gym is built, the girls will be able to go back to their usual program: playing basketball and volley ball.
