The yearly intramural activities of the girls' sports department opened with a volleyball tournament sponsored by the Girls' Sport Club. Barbara Smoot served as Miss Towse's assistant. i A Marilyn Mansield, Kathleen Kiehne, Doris Cobb, Betty Oxford, Wanda Vancil, Eileen Kiehne, Patricia Heuschober, and Juvata Jo Brooks were chosen captains on October the twentieth. After the closely fought series, Patricia Heuschober's team emerged victorious. Included in her group were: Betty Childs, Jessie Jo Harvey, Joan Meinz, Jean Nothdurft, Helen Schlegel, Carlyn Ann Thomp- son,Iola Crites, and Doris Vogelsang., Taking second place was the' team headed by Doris Cobb. Her team consisted of: Virginia Bolen, Prudence Kneibert, Shirley Moore, Viola Whitney, Ruby Sams, Margaret Buelow, Dorothy Jacobs, and Jeanette Sepienza. The standing of the teams is as follows: Heuschober, won 6, lost 2, Cobb, won S, lost 3, Vancil, won 2, lost 5, K. WA Lsjaorfa Because of a vacancy in the physical edu- cation department, Miss Towse was trans- ferred from Lorimier School to Central High School. We were happy to welcome Miss Towse as our new physical education and health' instructor. Here at Central she has been following the government out- line for physical fitness through physical education. Miss Towse attended junior college at Wil- liam Woods in Fulton, Missouri and inish- ed her B. S. in Education degree at the : Southeast Missouri State Teachers College here in Cape Girardeau. l H Before she taught at Lorimier, Miss Towse MISS TOWSE taught inthe high school at Kewanee, Missouri. While teaching at Kewanee, she attended three summer sessions at Colum- bia University in New York City and was swimming instructor at the Teachers College here one summer term. Upon the sponsorship of Miss Towse and the management of the Girls' Sport Club, the various intramural activities were held. Besides basketball and volleyball, table tennis, deck tennis, aerial darts, darts, and softball were run off in the latter part of the school year. A new intramural sport introduced this year was newcomb, which proved successful and exciting. Captains were: Wanda Vancil, Bobbe Matthews, Betty Childs, Pauline Schumacher, and La Wanda Stewart. Schumacher won the tournament by defeating Matthews 22 tO 17. ' The Central girls won one out of the. three basketball games played in compe- tition with the Training High 'School girls in the first interschool competition sponsored by the Girls' Sport Club. The sophomore and junior games were lost with the scores 23 to 17 and 27 to 23 respectively, while the senior game was won with a score of 40 to 10. These games were not played to sharpen competition but to promote pleasure and enjoyment of the group. Ten girls elected by the student body represented Central at the Play Day scheduled for April the tenth and held at the Southeast Missouri State Teachers College. From the senior group were' Kathleen ' ne, arilyn Mansfield, Eileen Kiehne, and La Wanda Stewart. The juniorigvgige Pgilrl 1014, Kathryn Steck, and Janet Clark, while the sophomores wfe'r'6' :B1lgQk, Anne Marie Buckner, and Margaret Strom. The play day has been an annua event since 1935 and has helped to keep up the ideals of clean plajaand ?podQpo tsmanship. ' Air 'Yuma JM ...,18....

The captains of the six teams were: Bobbe Matthews, Marilyn Mansfield, Betty Jo Smith, Carma Ann Adkins, Evelyn Hinkle, and La Wanda Stewart. This series was played on a percentage basis with Smithis team rating one hundred percent and Matthews' and Mansiield's teams each rating ninety percent. ' i On .Smith's team were: Kathleen Kiehne, Pearl Jones, Eula Bishop, Mayme Williams, Ruth Schilling, Patsy Bode, Rosella Wolters, Mary Lou Drum, Betty Strain, Edna Mae Allison, and Verleen Qualls. Eileen Kiehne assisted Miss Towse in the tournament as referee.
