To open the 1942-43 basketball season, the Tigers met the Redwings of St. Louis and defeated them 45-21. Playing the Anna, Illinois team in a hard fought tussle, the Tigers won 31-28. In a strictly defensive game, the Tigers met and defeated the Chaffee Red Devils 26-7 for their third straight win. For the next contest the Jackson Indians came to Cape, and in one of the closest games of the season were defeated 26-21. Extending their string of victories to five, the Bengals won from McBride of St. Louis 34-25. Again defeating the St. Louis Redwings, the Bengals really hit their stride, outplaying the visiting quintet 39-26. The first game in the city hoop contests ended with the Tigers over-running the Preps 47-31. Defeating the Thebes five in an easy win of 37-15, the Tigers increased their string of consecutive victories to eight. For their ninth match, the team Went to Fornfelt, Where they conquered the Bear- cats 53-29. In the next game the Tigers met the Chaffee team for the second time and again emerged victorious by a score of 33-14. Suffering their first and only defeat of the regular season, the Tigers were beaten by the Jackson Indians 32-31. The Bengals luck changed in the next battle, as they beat the Cairo Pilots 45-26. To gain their twelfth victory of the year, Central beat the Thebes team 29-14. The Tigers conquered the Preps next to take the city hoop title with a score of 37-15., The'Tigers rallied in the last five minutes of play to beat the Anna team 32-26. Ending their regular season right, the Tigers defeated the Fornfelt Bearcats 44-24. Moving on to the sub-regional tournament, the Tigers defeated Randles in the first game 51-20. Next they met Oran and defeated them by a score of 51-23. In the third game the final tally against Zalma read 41-26. In the final game of the sub-regional tournament the Tigers defeated Lutesville 46-33. They closed the season at the regional tournament, where they won their first game with Flat River 54-28 but lost to Desloge in the next game 37-34. The total points amassed by Central, exclusive of tournaments, were 589 to their opponents 3 54. -17- u .1-

BAYNHAM -- This is Jackis second season with the Tigers, and he displays a speedy attack and a neat defense. MEYER - Bob was a main stop on the team in this, his second and last year. He handled the ball with a great deal of dexterity and starred on defensive playing. - UPTON - Although Herbert wasn't always seen by the crowd, he was a fast player and really covered the court. He should go far next year with the ex- perience he has gained this season. HOPE - Harold finished up his basketball activities at Central this year by presenting a fine show of his ability. He was all over the hardwood and was a most dependable player. I-IAGER - Weldon was one of the main players of this year's team, having two seasons of experience behind him. He will be greatly missed next year. ' BRINKOPF -- Leon was one of the most used substitutes of the squad. He has shown plenty of promise and will be one of the important cogs in the team next year. UNDERWOOD - Albert produced a snappy brand of ball and a real Tiger' spirit, which showed he was really out to win. This is his last year at Central, and he will be greatly missed next year. WA Lsjaorfa Because of a vacancy in the physical edu- cation department, Miss Towse was trans- ferred from Lorimier School to Central High School. We were happy to welcome Miss Towse as our new physical education and health' instructor. Here at Central she has been following the government out- line for physical fitness through physical education. Miss Towse attended junior college at Wil- liam Woods in Fulton, Missouri and inish- ed her B. S. in Education degree at the : Southeast Missouri State Teachers College here in Cape Girardeau. l H Before she taught at Lorimier, Miss Towse MISS TOWSE taught inthe high school at Kewanee, Missouri. While teaching at Kewanee, she attended three summer sessions at Colum- bia University in New York City and was swimming instructor at the Teachers College here one summer term. Upon the sponsorship of Miss Towse and the management of the Girls' Sport Club, the various intramural activities were held. Besides basketball and volleyball, table tennis, deck tennis, aerial darts, darts, and softball were run off in the latter part of the school year. A new intramural sport introduced this year was newcomb, which proved successful and exciting. Captains were: Wanda Vancil, Bobbe Matthews, Betty Childs, Pauline Schumacher, and La Wanda Stewart. Schumacher won the tournament by defeating Matthews 22 tO 17. ' The Central girls won one out of the. three basketball games played in compe- tition with the Training High 'School girls in the first interschool competition sponsored by the Girls' Sport Club. The sophomore and junior games were lost with the scores 23 to 17 and 27 to 23 respectively, while the senior game was won with a score of 40 to 10. These games were not played to sharpen competition but to promote pleasure and enjoyment of the group. Ten girls elected by the student body represented Central at the Play Day scheduled for April the tenth and held at the Southeast Missouri State Teachers College. From the senior group were' Kathleen ' ne, arilyn Mansfield, Eileen Kiehne, and La Wanda Stewart. The juniorigvgige Pgilrl 1014, Kathryn Steck, and Janet Clark, while the sophomores wfe'r'6' :B1lgQk, Anne Marie Buckner, and Margaret Strom. The play day has been an annua event since 1935 and has helped to keep up the ideals of clean plajaand ?podQpo tsmanship. ' Air 'Yuma JM ...,18....
