VICTD DY GI IQAIQDUT COACH LOUIS MUEGGE Coach came to Central from the University of Illinois in 1928 and pro- ceeded to build up a fighting team. Because of his knowledge and love of the game, he has imparted to our players an enthusiastic interest which would not leave Central satisfied with less than a championship team. He also brought an enviable athletic record from the University of Illinois. He won two letters in football, playing guard on the team which won the Big Ten Conference and also the National Championship. In his senior year he was a member of the wrestling team which won the Conference Championship. Mr. Muegge graduated from the University of Illinois in 1928. He holds a degree of B. S. in Education, specializing in Physical Education and Athletic Coaching. He is a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. CAPTAIN EARL LESLIE After showing himself worthy of the position by his end runs, fighting qualities, and cooperation with his team mates, Earl Leslie was elected captain for the 1929 season. Because of these qualities he was further honored by being chosen Captain of the Southeast Missouri All-Star Team. He has played three years, being also prominent in basketball and track. He graduated in Janu- ary, 1930. Weight, 130 pounds. CAPTAIN-ELECT ETIENNE DARLING This is Darling's second year at Central. He was a fast backfield man and a player that never showed his emotions, nor lost his self control. He was a good pass snatcher and off-tackle runner, a real sportsman and a clean, hard fighter. He was enthusiastically selected as the leader of the Bengals for the 1930 season. THE 'I IGICRS' XYAR CRY Tigers, 'I'ig'ers, yes we are the Tigers, Ever ready lighters, yea team! Ktvylenr Leslie Wwhlxm-rx Croblre E, On October 4 the long expected game with Malden, last year's Southeast Mis- souri champions, was played here in a cold drizzling rain. The superior team- work, and off-tackle runs of our side- stepping, poker-faced captain-elect ETIENNE DARLING. with JIM KINIDER, the 215 pound center that made every pound count, made it pos- sible for Central to make nine first downs to Malden's two. The Tigers gained 125 yards to the Green VVaves' 35 yards. Since this is their first de- feat in two years, their Coach, Dutch Muir, summed the situation up by say- ing, A good team - we have no alibi. The game ended 13 to 0 in our favor -a game won by the sweat and brainy playing of a team that played as re- lentlessly as a machine. The Friday of the next week the Tigers batltod with the Red Devils from Chaffee, and defeated them 26 to 0. The long end runs of our all-Star South- east Missouri quarter-back, Captain SQITlRREI. LESLIE, one for 65 yards on an intercepted pass, and an- other for 55 yards on a snappy get-a- way from a line plunge, left the Red Devils completely bewildered. livery man played on his toes and our South- east Missouri all-star guard and punter, BILL VVICIQIIAM toted the pigskin 55 yards, before being downed, by inter- cepting a pass. This showed excellent broken Held running. On Saturday, Oct, 19, Central was invaded by the Egyptians from Cairo. Ill. Louis' team defended their record by defeating Leo's mfPrincipal Louis Schultz's brother, Cairo coachi team 45 to 0. BILL CRABTREE, captain of last year's team, and this year's all- star Southeast Missouri half-back, show- ed his ability to pass and run back punts. Coaching a punt on his 45 yard line and displaying the most marvelous side-stepping and twisting, he eluded his would-be tacklers and romped 55 yards for a touchdown. JIMMY KING also ' H1930 .-.48... After receiving a talk from Coach they came back in the last half wide awake and beat the Bull Dogs 26 to 0 On Turkey Day the Tigers took their tinals. The Indians from Jackson came over especially drilled for plays and determined to put a score in our oppon- ents' column. But the Tigers were a little more determined that such should not happen and defending their record scored in the iirst quarter. Then fol- lowed one of the toughest battles ever played on the Cape girdiron. Central - 2 jackson - 0 Forfeited. Central - 17 Fruitland - 19 The most freakish game in Central's basketball history. The teams didn't play basketball at all. The score is meaningless. SIKESTON 'TOURNAMENT Central played Sikeston Iirst, winning 39 to 15. VVe next played Chaffee, again winning by a score of 42 to 15. Then in a hard fought, fast game with Mathews we were feated 36 to 30. I SUB-DI5'I'RlC'l' 'TOURNAMENT AT JACKSON Playing Zalma, Central won 50 to 16. The next game was with Oak Ridge whom we beat 35 to 20. Both games were not very difficult. In the semi-tinals the Tigers lost to jackson 37 to 14. Our team put up a real tight and the score is not so bad because jackson won second place in the All Southeast Missouri Tournament. CITY CHAMPIONSHIP GAME In the final contest for the city championship the Tigers' excellent defense caused the Preps to stake their chances on long shots. Being very good at this, they won the victory. 1930 VICTUIQY GIIQAIQDUT Jessie Hutson Director of Girls Physical Education Miss Jessie Hutson, Director of Physi- cal Education for Girls, has shown herself a kind and sympathetic pal to every girl as Well as an excellent instructor. Along with his good grades Charlie has been very prominent in Central's activities. He was guard on our champion football team and at the same time was serving as president of the student council. He has played a leading part in two Red Dagger plays, the Senior play, and in a number of minor plays. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Charlie has had a wonderful record at Central and we want him to know we are proud of his achievements. SNAP CONTEST The Girardot Staff conducted a very interesting snap picture contest this year in order to obtain pictures which would truly represent student life. Prizes were awarded to the three best snaps. Many clever pictures were re- ceived and they indicated that Central has some good camera men.
