Fall of 1950 found us as green expectant and hopeful freshmen entertng the halls of Central Hrgh School to enlarge our world of expernences To lead us our furst year we chose Harold Flnley as presldent wtth able assnstance to be gaven hum by Davnd Emory vlce president and Becky Slack secretary treasurer At mud term we found that through our diligent WJ study 1795 forthy enght members In our class had been taken into the Junlor Honor Socuety Our Glee Club under the dlrectlon of Mrs Elsle Thomas won a superuor rating at the State Festival In Kingsport meanwhile the band directed by Mr ODell Wullls was off on a trlp wlth the football team to Jackson vllle Florida Later In the year they were Knoxvnlle Nancy Rogers represented our class tn the queens court on May Day The end of the year was upon us and awards were glven out Marlorle Black re celved the P T A award for the hughest aver age ID our class and Sammle Lynn Scandlyn receuved the P T A award for the second hlghest average By Becky Slack s name were recorded the highest grades nn Engllsh so she was awarded the English cup The algebra cup went to Duckle Layman When we returned to Central for the second time we had greater plans than ever T head these plans we agaln chose Harold Fun ley as our president Davld Emory as vlce prestdent Bull Kuddwell as secretary and Jeanne Dodson as treasurer helped us too Addlng her talents to the cheerleadlng squad was Nancy Rogers The dramatlcs department presented the Broadway play The Man Who Came t 9 Dinner and those from our class who took part were Harold Dean Moore Louus Bass Johnny Temple Don West and Bob Axley At T I L L the play A Gypsy Romance was presented and ut won flrst place an the dtstrlct and third un the state Marilyn Forbes Harold Dean Moore Sammne Lynn Scandlyn and Becky Grove were an the cast A four day trap through Kentucky was taken by our band members and they recenved an Aratlng ID both the reglon and the state Under the dlrectlon of Mrs Frances M Yett the Glee Club was rated as excellent when they attended the state festuval rn Chattanooga On May Day Sammle Lynn Scandlyn was crowned May Queen and Shirley Hlckey was one of the seven In her court award for the highest average In the sopho more class went to Jennlfer Tnpton Mlckey McCord received the English cup and Dlckne Layman agaln captured the algebra cup The Latln trophy was presented to Sammle Lynn Scandlyn and Jerry Edwards Louls Bass and Jennifer Tipton were the reclplents of the Lucy Templeton Bird Awards In September 1953 we became upperclass men better known as lunrors As electron tume rolled by we found we had chosen Davnd Emory president Ray Jenklns vtce presldent Jeanne Dodson secretary and Eddle Town send treasurer We chose John Ed Roberts to help Nancy cheer our athletes on Mr Wnllls agavn durected our band to an Al ratung at the state festival an Johnson Cnty When examnnatuons were over at mad term the Sensor Honor Socvety nnvuted I8 members of our class to loxn their ranks HISTORY OFTHE CLASS OF 1 54 awarded an A-l rating at the State Festival in when awards were handed out the ph T. At all the football games the band played as well as performed on the field. At one of the foot- ball games a committee from the Lion's Club came to appraise the band. It was chosen over other bands in the state to represent Tennessee at the National Lion's Club Con- vention in New York in July. Adding to the class of the band in the marching department were drum major Cornell Lofton, sponsor Marian Felknor, and maiorettes Joan Bounds, Betty Thress, Hazel Gaines, and Sandra Rose. In October the band went to Jefferson City to help cheer the Bobcats on to a 40-O football victory. 58 .Jr Nichols. The winter concert was given on February 11. The week-end of February 6, Dixon Browder, William McHarris, and Paul Hickox played in the All-East Tennessee Band in Chattanooga. Dixon and William also played in the All-State Band for the Teachers' Meeting in Nashville. The band attended the State Competition Festival at Jefferson City on April Q. The spring concert was given May 6. On June 1, 1954, the band played at the graduation exercises, ending a very successful year. The purpose of the Future Teachers of America is to instill in young people the desire to teach and to become acquainted with the profession as a whole. On February 24 four FUTURE TEACHERS girls were representatives to the Council of Southern Mountain Workers at Gatlinburg. The Second Annual District Convention of the F. T. A. was held March 5 at the First Chris- tian Church. Each year a senior girl from each chapter competes for the S100 scholarship presented by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Central's chapter raised money to present a scholarship to one of the senior members in recognition of his outstanding achievements. Future Teachers meet on the first Wednesday of every month. This increased circulation was due to more and better features and the efforts of the circulation staff. The staff held its meetings after school on the first and second Tuesdays of each month. The big proiect of the year was a six page issue on April l, containing extra features and April Fool stories, iokes, and iabber. The staff attended two newspaper confer- ences, the East Tennessee Scholastic Press Association held at Fulton High School on March 24 and the Tennessee High School Press Association held at the University of Tennessee on April 2 and 3, The CENTRALITE became a member of the National Scholastic Press Association and the paper was submitted for iudging there. David Emory and Barney Gid- dens carried the ball most of the way with Emory scoring three touchdowns and Charlie Hansard scoring the other. C. H. S.-Bearden Central runs wild in smashing Bearden 38-O. Key blocks made by Jim Cole, Richard Craig, Bob Smith, Lonnie Wilkerson, Herb Buckner, and Bud Witt paved the way for the Bobcat backfield. Scoring were Barney Giddens, David Emory, Jimmy Dykes, Curtis Patty, and Earl Crosland. Dykes' 88 yard kickoff return and Crosland's 41 yard romp were the high- lights of the game. C. H. S.-lake City Central overpowers Lake City 31-2 by using reserve strength. David Emory was Central's Big Wheel, running all over the field, led by quarterback Eddie Townsend. Bill Oldham, Jim Gammon, Fred Luethke, Harold Ailor, Larry Durisch, KenAColquitt, and Larry Craig were only a few of the standouts of the game. Bob Smith broke his back and was out for the rest of the season. C. H. S.-Bradley Central fights from behind for a 27-7 victory over Bradley. Emory scored two touchdowns and ran straight through the holes made by guards Jim Cole and Lonnie Wilkerson. Great defense was played by Larry Craig, Bob Axley, Bill Johnson, Don McNeil, Jim Darling, Ben Baker, Bill Maclin, Jim Gammon, Bill Ramsey. C. H. S.-Rule Subs lead attack with 26-7 victory over Rule. Scoring for Central were Townsend, Giddens, and Jack Wake. Central's defense holds Rule to only 56 yards. Bud Witt, Bob Axley, Richard Craig, Herb Buckner, and Jim Cole were the defensive mainstays. C. H. S.-Jefferson City Central's defensive team holds Jefferson City as the Bobcats win 31-O.
