Mr. O'DelI Willis, Director. ill 'i THE BAND The past year has been another highly successful year for the band. Led by drum maior Tomrny Graves, sponsor Shirley Tindell, and maiorettes Joan Bounds, Barbara Giddens, Joyce Sharp, and Blond Nicely, the snappy- stepping marching band gave many colorful halftime programs with precision marching manuevers and novelty stunts. In October the band journeyed to Oak Ridge for the game with the Wildcats. The four-stripe officers for the past year were student conductor G. T. Ballenger, band captain Bobby Chambers, and concert master .lack Watson. Other officers were Collins, Graves, Thomas, J. Hill, Sanner, Craig, B. Edwards, Hickox, McCord, and Walters. Eleven members of the band were chosen to attend the East Tennessee Band Clinic in Oak Ridge 58 on February 6-8. These were Beverly Bay- less, Bobby Chambers, Gene Collins, Larry Craig, Barney Edwards, Tommy Graves, Paul Hickox, Mickey McCord, Fred Sanner, Jack Thomas, and Jack Watson. From these, Gene Collins was selected to represent Central at the All-State Band Clinic in Nashville. The first main event of concert season was the Winter Concert on February 12. The band made three trips during the latter half of the year. The first of these was to Chatta- nooga on April IO-I2 to play for the meeting of the Southern Music Educators Association. The following week the band competed in the State Competition Festival at Johnson City. Another trip was planned for May. The final concert of the year was given on May 8. Q O ,W i ? The entire staff of approximately thirty members met vveelcly in the statt room, and the editorial board held monthly meetings. Two business policies were initiated: yearly subscriptions tor the students and advertising sold at a reduction for nine or five issues. The big proiect ot the CENTRALITE was to sponsor a straw vote, with students voting tor national, state, and local officials. Posters and political debates in assemblies helped to lend an authentic air to the proceedings. The results were announced in the October issue ot the paper.
