At the meetings held once every two weeks with their advisor, Mrs. Gertrude Wineman, members of the French Il class learn more about France, the French language and French people by reporting on books dealing with that country long ago and today, and taking imaginary trips into the picturesque old provinces. They make gay projects dealing with the phases of the French language which are of interest to them, sing songs in French, act and write original French skits and carry on conversations in that language. Various activities are also sponsored at school, The club put on hob-nobs after basketball games, took part in the carnival and provided a memorable occasion in the crowning of the Homecoming Queen at one of their dances. With nothing but the smell of tar lacking for atmosphere the Centralian Singers and Sophomore Chorus presented Gilbert and Sullivan's satiric operetta about life on a British man-o'-war, Under the able direction of Dwight E. Sherwood, the song-packed, unabridged operetta was performed for two packed houses and public demand required a repeat performance the following week. This is only the second time in twenty-five years that three performances of a school pro- duction were necessary to accommodate the demand, which speaks well of the cast. At one of the last rehearsals the famed Metropolitan Opera tenor, James Melton, mounted the stage and gave some professional hints to the cast and demonstrated several of the parts, The cast will never forget the thrill, Leo M. Haesle officiated in the pit directing the accompanying Senior Orchestra. . 83 . HALE. GROSSMAN. ANDERSON. DUNLOP. TEEN CANTEEN. Back in December of I943 a dream came true: the Teen Canteen had its first opening - but only after months of planning and weeks of actual work by an energetic exec- utive board. We now have a clean, respectable place of our own where the crowd can go to dance, swallow a coke at the fountain, or just hang around for a while. Those who have known its progress have known aching backs, paint smeared faces, bruised fingers, and frantic preparation. Other members have known the exciting first nights, fun packed parties, radio broadcasts, and swell times. Our biggest thanks go to Dr, R. E. Leigh and Jack Horner for their backing and understanding direction. Orchids to our competent chaperones, Mrs. W. S, Drummond and Mrs. D. D, Page. An exotic perfume called Spring Green seems to be the cause of all the trouble. To start things off Major Todd and Nina Cassell, childhood sweethearts, once more fall in love, T. Newton Todd, the Major's son, causes much trouble with his worm experiments, involving the police. But in spite of all the difficulties caused by Newton's pets his efforts are rewarded when a worm specialist travels all the way from Texas to purchase the worms for his experiments. Many new situations arise over the invitations to a charity ball which ends with Toni going with Newton, Pinkie with Bing and Eula with Dunk. Under the direction of Miss Dorothy Zimmerman, long hours of practice were well rewarded by a splendid performance. u86p BLACK, STEPHENS. PANZER. HERBERG. GLIEDEN. MAJORETTES. COOPERATIVE BUSINESS EDUCATION. With the cooperation of local businessmen, Central has trained and given practical experience to seventeen girls who have taken the course in secre- tarial training. Under the direction of Viona Hansen these girls have ascertained their aptitudes and deter- mined their fitness for this type of vocation, Besides working in the office here in school they have all been given part-time secretarial jobs in the offices of businessmen about town, This enables the school and the businessman to modernize and mold secretaries-to-be into efficient workers of tomorrow, DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION. This course offered in Central deals entirely with the retailing end of the business world. This year Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell has instructed and placed 23 students in part time jobs. The experience they receive from this practical training is invaluable and can be gained in no other manner, ln the picture at the right Marion Iverson is receiving in- struction fram her trainer. -4' S XTTQ- ., xox X-., L . The Visual Education class is made up of about ten boys who have learned to run the varied forms of motion picture projectors, The class, under the supervision of A. G. Eiland, shows films at Central, public schools, Red Cross, the Y.M.C.A., churches and service clubs throughout the city. The films shown at the schools have the general purpose in mind that it is easier to learn by also seeing as well as hearing and readings The pictures as shown are a supplement to the daily class discussions. Science, history, first aid, sewing, cooking, mathematics, industry and business are the vocational topics shown in these films. In the future it is hoped the class will expand in members, in amount of equipment, and that more time can be devoted to visual education. nQ2s Trzlmte To Serfuzcemen Centrol con rughtfully be proud of her sons ond doughters thot hove gone forth to preserve the Arnerlcon ldeo of democrocy ond freedom We ore groteful for their socruflce lt rs for us to see thot thelr efforts hove not been sn voun Whale It as lmpossuble to record every Centrol :te thot hos gone forth to serve the honor roll sible Only groduotes oppeor on thus Inst Only o port of Centrol s contribution con be llsted Those others whose nomes ore not here hove shored ID wrutung Centrol s norne unto history Them we solute wuth these whose nomes we here :nscrvbe wuth groteful heorts John Holten 93 C O .
