Cheerleaders Were Victorious The Central Varsity Cheerleaders were a major part of the athletic program, yet they received little recognition. They had a tough job that required many hours of practice both in and out of school. It all began with the professional training at summer camp where many different squads from all over the state met to develop new ideas and com- pete for spirit awards. At this competition, the cheerleaders won superior ratings in dif- ferent areas and won the trophy for the most superior squad. During the year, they were responsible for urging higher attendance and raising the spirit of the fans and athletes at all of the games. With cheers on the sidelines and routines, the cheerleaders were able to boost up the Central spirit and pride. As a result, with all the work and practice they put into all the games and pep rallies, they still had time to become close friends. In ad- dition, they developed mutual respect and appreciation from the coaches, players, teachers, and the fans. 86 Varsity Cheerleaders Like any other sport, the cheerleade. had a coach, Dottie Dockery, a traine gymnast with cheerleading experience. Sh helped them with new stunts and pyramids but did not pressure them into things wher they felt they weren't able to do it. Although she was tough and made them work hard, she always put safety of the squad first. On December 6, all this practice paid off. The Central cheerleaders made a place for themselves at the University of Alabama Regionals in Birmingham. Because they were competing against 50 other squads, their practices got tougher and longer as December drew near. Lori Hughen said of regionals, We just wanted to go for the ex- perience and do our best. Instead, we brought home a first place trophy and a great feeling of accomplishment. Winning regionals allowed the cheerleaders to com- pete against other squads around the coun- try at the nationals in Orlando, Florida. The cheerleaders received 7th in the nation when they competed in Orlando. ,Q R
