The boys' golf team, with the help and guidance of Coach Beck, practiced during sixth period and after school every day at the University Golf Course. As the defen- ding State Champions, Coach Beck is look- ing for people that have worked hard in the last five or six months, as well as improve- ment, he thinks the team will peak again this year at the State Tournament. Top team members include Jeff Street, Frank Slapikas, and Jim Allison. Other promising players include Shane Warren, Jeff Leroy, Kevin Davis, Mark McGahey, Martin Leiter, and Mike Verzino. The only freshman on the team was Lee Hayes. Coach Beck was very optimistic about the team and he thinks they can be better than last year, although they will have a tough act to follow. The girls' golf team, with the help of Coach Taylor practiced when the weather permit- ted. Also defending state champions, they lost two good players and the only returning player was Karen Spruill. Coach Taylor felt this to be a rebuilding year and that Karen Spruill helped guide the other promising team members, Mary Jo Belk and Brittany Coon. Some teams they played during the season were Berry, Mountain Brook, Vestavia, and Wright's Girls School. Coach Taylor commented that this team couldn't compare to last year's, but the girls had good attitudes and were capable of being competitive with other teams in the state. 82 Varsity Golf Teams p to Par

84 Varsity Soccer Team Striving for Goals Coached by Jim Chestnut, his first year with the team, this year's CHS soccer team's record was outstanding. According to Coach Chestnut, this year's players were more experienced and older than previously. Also, Coach Chestnut said that through the years of soccer at Central, we have become more competitive at the level of competition we play. Led by their most impor- tant players - William Albritton, Dan Powell, Scott Barnett, and Alfonso Richardson, the team's strong defense was a vital asset, along with their strong leadership. Mark Mitchell and Billy Vines, halfbacks, and Doug Mutert, a forward, also con- tributed their talent to the team's victories. Beginning the first of March, the team's season lasted until late May. Practicing every night for ,gr fi two hours in the spring, the soccer team prepare: thoroughly for the season. In the beginning, they all practiced together, but as Coach Chestnu learned each player's ability, they were divided in to a varsity, B-team, and J.V. team. The Varsit team had a total of five players. Traveling tj Huntsville, Mobile, Birmingham, and many othei places, the soccer team's toughest opponent: were Vestavia Hills and Pelham, both of Birm ingham. Coach Chestnut felt that the team has improved an astonishing amount since last yeai and we are growing stronger. We were able to play at a higher level of competition than we have had in the past. We had a great group o remarkable men.
