78 Girls Varsity Tennis Ace Players Ll.. l ll s 1 ff 2 rr 1 l Long before the beginning of tennis season in March, the girls tennis team was out practicing on the courts. Each week, their coach, Beth Allaway, staged challenge matches which allowed team members to experience competition and gave each girl a chance to move to a higher position on the team. All the girls on the team participated in summer tournament play. Marla Pierson was ranked second in the state of 16 year olds, and she is ranked in the top 20 in the south. Libby Johnson was ranked sixth in the state and qualified for Southern regional play. Other ranked players include Ann Elizabeth Smith l12l, Amy Atkinson l25l, and Maysa Nagi l30l. This year's Varsity team included Marla Pierson, Libby Johnson, Amy Atkinson, Avery Wilson, Maysa Nagi, and Ann Elizabeth Smith. Other team members were Mary Emily Davis, Angie Barnes, Vicki Buckley, Elizabeth Colwick, Ashley Gray, Disa Hicks, Julie Kapphan, Amy Peppenhorst, and Christie Ray. The Varsity Team did not lose players this year. Beth Allaway served as the team's coach. Se Suzanne Globetti was the team manager for years. The team practiced during 6th period and star in February, the team practiced after school a The season started the week after spring breal March and finished in May. Opponents inclu Tuscaloosa County High, Demopolis, Vestavia of mingham, and Grissom of Huntsville, all in sin and doubles play. The Varsity team was made up of three sen picked as freshmen by Coach Allaway. They h played all four years and had become strong t players. Avery Wilson, Ann Elizabeth Smith, L Johnson, and manager Suzanne Globetti will be ed next year. However, the younger team mem will move up to take over in 1988.
