K 1 t Q Coach Graves One Track Mind Rising in the early hours of the morn- ing, the track team practiced Monday through Friday, beginning at 5:30 a.m. As well as running before school, practice continued every day after school for well over an hour. The long distance runners could be seen running throughout Tuscaloosa. However, the team members who participated in short distance runs, sprints, and hurdles prac- ticed at the Central track and field. All of the effort put forth was justified by the outcome of the meets the team participated in. The state meets which were held January 30 and April 30 con- sisted of the following events: jumps, distances, middle distances, sprints, throws, and cross country events. The re- maining eight meets were held on weekends. All the members of the track team con- tributed greatly to the success of the season. One outstanding member who led the team to victory was Celeste Pat- ton. Her events consisted of the 400 and 800 meter sprints, helping get her selected an All-American. Charles Taylor, running sprints, and Charles Smith, running middle distances, were also outstanding track team members. The team's hard work and talent were extended to its full potential due to the expertise of Coach Graves.
