70 Lady Flying Falcons SOARING HIGH After losing 5 seniors, the many returning athletes who graced the court this season contributed greatly to this year's success as well as over the past few years. Ending last year's record with 17 wins and 5 losses this year's 4 seniors were determined to pull together making the 1986-87 season better, We had a good season last year, but we like to set our goals higher each year to achieve as much as we can, stated Michelle Smith, the number one prospect in the state this year with opportunity to be named to the All-American team. Coach Jim Holland also had high expecta- tions for the team. I believe we had a good season last year, but I feel that with more teamwork we have the potential to go much further, but only if we can pull together. Respecting their coach, they appreciate his work to create a family atmosphere. Milli- cent Herrod, a 4-year veteran, felt as if he were the father and her teammates were her sisters. Lynn Croom also appreciated Coach Holland and his assistant, Rod Her- ren, and wants to play basketball in college, feeling she is strong enough from her ex- periences at CHS. Practice for the Lady Falcons proved to be tough again this year. Traditionally at CHS getting started early and staying in shape are the key habits in keeping a good ball club. Carol Hedgemon, also a senior, says she enjoyed practice sessions and felt the more practice the more comfortable playing games was.

p to Bat Coach Norm Lacey was optimistic about the 1987 baseball season. Although they lost five starters and a tremendous amount of speed, more quality people and new players returned. The seniors this year provided important leadership. Jay Deas and Mike Ferry were the pitchers. Stewart Atkins, Jeff Carter, Anthony Harris, Brian Trimbett, and Tim Stewart were other seniors on the team. The Central Baseball Team practiced two hours every day to make them a contender for regionals. Last year their record was 23-4 which placed them first in the state and sixteenth in the country. Because they were first in the state, they were asked to participate in international com- petition. They were invited to compete in Holland, Italy, China, and Australia. Being the least expensive, they chose Australia. Last year's graduates and this year's team will go to Australia this summer from August 1 to August 15. This is the first Central team to compete in International Competition, which shows the great talent of this team. 72 Varsity 5 wwfl .
