F DD As an extensive effort to increase students' awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, Ms. Kidder, with the assistance of a student board, held a Don't Drink and Drive week. Having taken place for the last two years, this event has proven very successful. The week consisted of several events which were executed by the student board, FADD, Falcons Against Drunk Driving. This board consisted of over forty-four Central students, who were chosen by teacher recommendation and student interest. Con- sisting of eighteen committees, the board was respon- sible for developing activities during the week. The focus of this week was to achieve the goals set by committee heads. Involving other schools in the city and county was one of the main objectives of the week. Of the activities planned for the week, one was a visit from prisoners involved in drunk driving convic- tions. Their testimonies were used to influence students' decisions concerning drinking and driving. One of the most significant activities planned for the week was a gathering of students from all over the county at Memorial Coliseum to listen to the new Alabama coach, Eill Curry, speak about drugs and alcohol. At Dr. Tinney's zquest to involve Central in this activity, Ms. Kidder was appointed head of the organization of Don't Drink and Drive week. Initiated by a challenge from Reader's Digest Foundation, this week was supposed to involve U.S. High School students in fighting drinking and driving. Participation in this activity was encouraged by several scholar- ships offered from Reader's Digest. Schools that con- ducted the best 115 programs shared a total of S500,000 in four year scholarships. During the 1985-86 competition, FADD won a total of 34,000 in scholarships for Central students. This has been one of the most positive influential projects organized at Central. Thanks to the tremen- dous involvement of Ms. Kidder, other faculty, and the extensive hard work of the student board, this week has greatly increased the awareness of drinking and driving in students and the community. As stated by a board member, Melissa Fanning, This week is very beneficial because it allows students to become aware of the dangers of driving while intoxicated. 5... FADD 61
