BAND The Central Union High School Band looks very dignified this year with their new band uniforms. This year the band has had many activities, such as marching in parades, performing at games, and taking part in exchange assemblies. At the Fresno District Fair, the band gave a half hour concert. In November, the fifty-five member band, drum major, majorettes, and mascot with their instructor Mr, J. Byron Nikolauson, went to Long Beach, California, to perform in the An- nual All Western Band Review. Before going to Long Beach, they had to make money to pay for the expenses of the trip. Two of their biggest projects were: sell- ing calendars and Cadillac Candy . Thanks to the community, the projects were very suc- cessful. Page 99

STRING ENSEMBLE Mr. Byron Nikolauson, director the Central Union High School band, is also in charge of the string ensemble. The string ensemble is a class made up of students who wish to study and further develop their musical talent with a string instrument. With only the string instruments in the class, Mr. Nikolau- son is able to concentrate on the strings. This way the students receive special- ized training on their particular instrument. This is the first year that such a class has been offered in the music department. The class has been able to im- prove with greater speed and obtain a wider scope of knowledge in this field. The string ensemble is also a part of the school orchestra. They have been en- joyed and appreciated by all who have had the good fortune to hear them at the various school functions. Some of the functions included the senior and junior plays, Christmas play, May Day, Baccalaureate, and Graduation.
