Choosing the field of Education, Mr. Brown early made a name for himself in that field and re- turned to Central as a teacher, leaving there to become for many years the highly respected principal of the Ericsson School. This year Mr. Brown was elevated to the principalship of his Alma Mater where his utmost con- cern is the welfare of the individual student and the maintenance of good public relations for the school. . --2- I 1 Qi M .57 Ii IJ fsfp fl Contents Cbgjiwi fn' 1 - .AAr44, fffcav - , ,nf fi'-764677 C110-c foo-f .K f - M44 t .'f'A if'f ,'l'l ff, .geaaaazzssa ,7,6f,Z,,fM,4,,4.17I g:D54Z,z5,:1:Qc:g !fLu'113OgQOf 15QoQE MH75f,GM2, Ji.. -I U O 4617 ff If '. Callaway, Mr. John Berg, Mr. George Shaw fSupt.J, Mr. Ralph Erickson, Mr. Arthur Westlund. Front row, left to right: Mr. I. L. Nichols, Mrs. Walter Lin- degren, Mr. Hugo Swanson. Absent: Mr. Roland Amundson Good schools don't just happen. They are the result of long hours of planning on the part of a duly elected board of education and its chosen representative, the superintendent. Theirs is the task of providing a school program that's right for all students, the academically minded who go on to college and the non-academically minded who must be able to step into an economic spot in the community as soon as they leave school. Though its problems may snowball, the local board will still weigh them carefully, realizing all to well that youth is our nation's most precious re- source. ADMINISTRATION GEORGE E. SHAW Superintendent of Schools Central is proud of the promotion that came to its former principal. Mr. Shaw has always extended the spirit of cooperation and friend- liness to anyone who needed it, and carried that same spirit into the superintendency. MAURICE BROWN ,,-we Principal g . n Mr. Brown believes very firmly in the prin- ciples of democracy and in h1S quiet, con- sistent way endeavors to build his school policies around them. 4' ,, : FRANK CIRILLI Assistant Principal Advise and supervise-that is the job of Mr. Cirilli, Dean of Boys at Central. Annually, hun- dreds of boys find their way to his office, receiving from him the solution to the problems which are a daily part of our complex school life. ALICE LOMOE Dean of Girls Wise, understanding, gracious, Miss Lomoe is at ease in any situation and firmly maintains discipline among the girls at Central. Further, she recognizes the need for training girls in the social graces and, as their ac- knowledged leader, guides them thru a program that will enable them to hold their own in the social positions they will occupy after graduation. Courteous and efficient are two words that sum up the office force at Central. Marion Elli- son, who has so capably acted as secretary to the principal, left at mid-season to become a part of the force at Blaine. Her duties fell to Frances Putnam and a new-comer, Carol Lettenstrom, who is already making a niche for herself in our hearts. Students appreciate the pleasant per- sonalities of these girls and the consideration shown to solving their difficulties. Mary Jo A1 ndt, xx ho is in charge of the busi ness end of the Student Program, makes the hand- ling of bus tickets and collection of student fees a pleasant task rather than a chore. Every one in school knows and loves our school treasurer. g orricis FoRcE ,wmay , mia ,,,A .-14L,. I AKERS, PAUL .. . .Language Arts 10, Dramatics 4, .l . In some cases it has been necessary to revise secondary school curricula to meet these changes. It is Mr. Bromley's duty to follow the present trends in education and keep Central in step with them. Because of the many standardized tests he gives the students, he is probably the best known of the supervisors who come to us from Blaine. ' 1 v fu. Anderson, B An active organization with emphasis on the service as well as the social side of life. the Athenae Club had another successful year in '54- '55. They began it with their participation in the Viking Day parade where they combined efforts with the Booster and Coquina Clubs to take first place in the float division of the parade. One of their members, Shirley Kangas, reigned as queen at the Viking Dance. They initiated new mem- bers and gave a formal dinner for them. Later, they directed their energy toselling Christmas cards. stationery, and theater tickets. They held candy and rummage sales to raise funds for their annual gift to the school. They served at teach- ers' meetings and assisted at the Senior Banquet. the Basketball-Football Dinner, and helped with the College Day luncheon. Their Sweater Dance. the Masque Fantasy, was an outstanding school event. Their Mothers' Tea was a delightful occa- sion for both the mothers and the girls. A trip lo the Ice Follies in Minneapolis for the Senior and .Junior girls and their advisor, Miss Tetzler, was the reward they achieved for their three-year participation in this fine organization. Proudly fifty-three service- wise girls worked cooperatively with the other clubs to make social life at Central very enjoy- able for others as well as themselves. They be- gan the year with a Tea for Freshman girls, they held informal and formal initiations for their new members, they did their share in preparing and serving food at the College Day luncheon, and the Football-Basketball and Senior Banquets, and they served coffee and cake to the teachers to put them in a good mood at faculty meetings. Zeal- ously they sold candy, pencils and theater tickets to raise funds for a gift to the school. High on their program of activities they listed a very fes- tive Mothers' Tea, a Valentine party, and a truly memorable Christmas Dance. When spring roll- ed round again, they featured a Fashion Show and treated themselves to a trip to the Ice Follies in Minneapolis. It can honestly be said that these girls, and their advisor Miss Lomoe, took on great- ness by becoming a part of a cause greater than themselves. Weren't the Superior homes beautifully decor- ated this Christmas? Chances are some of the wreaths used were bought from Coquina girls who undertook this aesthetically satisfying project for the first time this year. A quiet organization, the thirty-seven Coquinas work whole-heartedly at their projects. most of which parallel those of the Athenae and Booster Clubs, They cooperate with the other two clubs in serving at all the luncheons and banquets that come during a busy school year. They, too, know just the right delicacy to tempt the appetites of the weary teachers before the teachers' meetings, They collaborate with the other units to make Viking Day festivities some- thing to remember. Like the other clubs. they have an annual dance-the Cotton Hop. Isn't that a name? Makes one want to put on new spring clothes and go to it, to shake off the winter blues. The girls and their advisor, Miss Rose, use some of the proceeds from the Hop, and from their sale of Viking banners and Central High School combs, for their annual gift to the school. One of the happy experiences of the year was the joint trip of the Junior and Senior girls of the three origami. zations, to the Ice,Fol1ies in Minneapolis. They really went to town that day. This year the team con- sisted of approximately 25 people selected from a much larger group. A successful speech festival was held at Central in March at which time sev- eral visiting schools participated. There was an opportunity for making friends with other young people interested in the speech field. A trip by Greyhound bus to Hurley was made April lst when the squad took part in the annual district speech meet. A comfortable stopover for dinner was made at the Menard Hotel in Ashland. Spe- cial effort vvas made to have the students partici- pate in community activities during the year either in single speeches or panel discussions. This helped them develop poise and started them de- veloping their own speaking ability. Some stu- dents appeared before elementary school audi- ences. Y CENTRAUS AN Activity seemed to be the keynote of the senior band this year. Under the able direction of Mr. S. Brinley Shaw the band presented a concert in Wayzata, Minnesota, on May 22, 1954. Still performing as excellently as ever, they appeared in a huge parade in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, on June 6 and took the first place trophy for the best marching band. This year with many new members the 75 piece band continued to lend spirit to games, pep assemblies, concerts, and parades. Bandjive, by H. W. Rusch, set toes to tapping at the basketball games while Albert Davis' Three Cardinals, featuring a trumpet trio composed of Joe Olson, Alan Birch, and Roger Kenny added a modern touch to the band's annual concert in April. Performing on May 21, at Pop- lar, Wisconsin, the band lent their touch to the dedication of the Richard I. Bong Mem- orial. Major Bong was World War II number one air ace and former member of the Central High School Senior Band. Many of the nation's celebrities were present at this dedication and were impressed by the discipline, the artistry, and the vitality of the band's performance. The band is a definite asset to the school and membership in it a privilege. arclz on olcl Central 4 Vmmwzwfwmzm.-:getaway.uu 2awQv: f ' f--, ,w r2,nvzmmuvi.1 The Brewster Boy Joey Brewster Pee Yt'ee Mother Brewster Nancy Breyvster Phillip Hayworth Minerva Mitchell Bonnie Bates Syvifty Elsa Bates Grandma Officer . They lost this game 19-O, but this didn't bother the coach or his ooys. The little Vikings won their next game over the Superior East 13-tl. Some of the outstanding players were Jack Driessen, Bruce Lee, Grant Peterson and their Captain and outstanding center, Don Rockstad. They were touted as a green team but what they lacked in experience they made up for in spirit and desire to win. In the first game against Park Falls the Vikings worked their quick openers and deception play smoothly off their fast operating split T offense. They made the mistakes any team will make in its first game, but the tough blocking and hard tack- ling of the line gave Central a 19-14 victory. Jack Stark and Ken Richardson were the back field main stays, each scoring a touchdown. Stan Ladich also broke into the scoring column on a pass from Stark. DULUTH CATHEDRAL In their second game, Central met a determined Du- luth Cathedral squad. The game was played as torrents of rain plummeted down, turning the field into a mud- dy mess. Richardson's sweeping end runs and Erick- son's center of the line plunges just couldn't crack the tough Hilltopper defense. The combination of a slip- pery field and an even more slippery ball was just enough to lock the Viking offense. The Vikings receiv- ed their first bitter taste of defeat in losing 20-O. THE GRIDIRG BEMIDJI Central journeyed to Bemidji with high hopes of up- setting the number 3 team in Minnesota, but Bemidji's hard running backs and rugged line were too much for Central's valiant Vikings and they succumbed to defeat by the score of 26-6. After the first 6 minutes of play Bemidji had cross- ed Central's goal line twice. From then on, Central's line dug in with Roger Moe and Stan Ladich playing brilliantly on offense and defense. Leading the way for Bemidji was their all-state halfback, Jack XVhiting, who scored three times. The Vikings only T. D. came on a pass from Jack Stark to Stan Ladich early in the sec- ond half. DENFELD On September 24 the Vikings played host to Duluth Denfeld. The Hunters scored early, but Central retali- ated after a sustained drive by Jack Stark. Denfeld led by a touchdown when Central took the kickoff and moved it up to the Hunter's 40 yard line. Lyle Skandel took the ball on a hand off play and ran 40 yards to hit pay dirt. Denfeld then pulled the game out of the fire and defeated Central 21-13. -5 2- INTERNATIONAL FALLS In the final game of the sea- son, Central played host to the number one team in Minnesota, the Broncos from International Falls. The Vikings were snow- ed under by a 40-6 score. The game was held in the newly erected stadium before 3,300 fans. It was well played and thrilling despite the effects of a snow storm which engulfed the play- ing field. The Viking's only score came on a pass from Chuck Erickson to Gene Evens. Leading the International Falls attack were the Crotty brothers and Bronco Nagurski, Jr. Football is played in all kinds of weather. DULUTH EAST Central again met and defeated a Duluth team in winning their fourth game. This time Duluth East was the victim, falling by the score of 26-13. Central scored twice in the first two minutes and remained in command the re- mainder of the game. Chuck Erickson, versa- tile Viking fullback, scored two touchdowns and passed to end Roger Moe for a third. Jerry Correll scored the fourth touchdown. Starring in the line was Roger Moe who play- ed a stellar game. V L, ' ' ', :,,, ..,f, A 5, K? V: ji: 2 , 2: WW DULUTH CENTRAL After losing the Bemidji game. the Vikings came storming back to roll over Duluth Central to the tune of 20-0. With Stark throwing passes to Evens, flashy reserve and replacing the injured Stan Ladich, the Vik- ings were unstoppable, The scoring was freely distri- buted with Moe, Richardson, and Erickson scoring touchdowns. Central's rugged line, sparked by Salo and Ronca, held Duluth to two first downs. Central tallied ten first downs. SUPERIOR EAST The Vikings ended a losing streak by swamping the Orientals 25-6, due to a fine team effort. Behind the protection of his rugged forward wall, Jack Stark displayed pinpoint passing to his ends Roger Moe and Stan Ladich. Ladich garnered a touchdown in the first half on a jump pass from Erickson. Centralls backs, Granstrom, Stark and Richardson, had a field day as they sped around, through, and over the Oriental line with ease. Each scored a touchdown. To add to their miseries, Ladich went hog wild with seven buckets in the third quarter. The last stanza was played rather recklessly by both squads. Final score: Central 54, Cathedral 31. SUPERIOR EAST- Dec. 18. '54 On the college floor in the second intercity tangle of the season the Vikings turned back a rugged East team by a close 49-45. Cen- tral got a rather rude awakening when East got away to a fast start to lead by 6 at the quarter. Central managed to lead by 2 at the half and enlarged it to seven at the three quarter mark. The final quarter featured a last ditch drive by the Orientals and some remarkable defense maneuvers under the boards by the Vik- ings, A thriller all the way with Central winning in the last three minutes. Ladich again showed fine form as well as 22 points for his efforts. Me and my shadow. I 1 Tax. A11 .. AW el Clear the floor, here l come. AMS Jan. 13, '55 Upset minded Duluth Cathedral rolled onto the Vikings court, and shooting with great accuracy, piled up a quick lead. Central seemingly was unable to find a gap in the Hilltopper defense until the third quarter. Suddenly they could do no wrong, burning up the court with offensive gems. Going into the final Canto the pur- ple and white had a miraculous 45-41 lead. The 'Toppers were far from beaten however, and it was a slam bang affair right to the end. Ladich powered 28 counters through the hoop to lead the scorers. Final Score: Central 65, Cathedral 62. ST. Final: Central 54, St. Louis Park 59. HURLEY- Feb. 25, '55 A crushing press, applied against the Midgets for the first time this season, surprised the Hurley team to such an extent that they found it very rough to get the ball to the basket. As the tournament started, they were in fine shape and willing to go all the way. They fought hard from the start when they played against Hayward. The second game of the Regionals against East was close, but the final game against Hurley, won the title for the Vikings. As the team entered in the Sectional tourney at Spooner, they opened with a victory from Bloomer, and in the second game, won the trophy from Washburn. Happy regional champs. Ti get meets tiger. TI E Then the big time came. To Madison we go, everyone shouted with smiles on their faces. The first game was with Platteville and they came up with a victory. The second game, and probably the most exciting game all season, was against Monroe when we just skimmed by with a two point victory. As the final game came up, they knew they had to play hard against Eau Claire but the tables turned and the Vikings came in second place. When the team arrived back home, there was an assemb- ly in the large gym. A large crowd had gathered to Wel- come home the Mighty Vikings. Happy-go-lucky. 'Wi 9: Time out for wrestlm 'ES' N?
