R. candidate .4 was Nancy Olson. I , FACULTY Just think! Students once went to one-room schools, had long distances to travel, had teachers who often cracked the hickory stick across the palms of their hands, and taught out of books only. They didn't be- lieve in any kind of social ac- tivities in the schools either. The teachers of our schools of today teach us our lessons, and supervise as well as take part in our social activities. Yes, we can well be proud of our faculty. I 5 B ' SPE' Ag? iq ei: .wily , ' is . 0 ' f 1 5 1 X .sq M. 1 Q ' J I 1, w X al W K Q 5535 wif. Think if there were no one to wash and sweep floors, no heat, and when your locker got stuck there was no one to fix it. Our school just wouldn't be the same. Throughout the day they are busily doing these iobs which we appreciate. Back row: Nelson, Langerman, R. Larson, Front row: D, Larson, Anderson, Moe. HCME R Nodding his head and rub- bing his eyes, Rip Van Viking exclaimed wonderingly, Could I still be dreaming? Why these homerooms, all thirty- three of them are-well, they're simply wonderful. Heating throughout the room, lights, blackboards, pleasant smiling teachers, why I iust can't even begin to count all the improve- ments. These classrooms make me feel like even I would like to return to school again. 'Ili iuv S I ' r-if L A ' . , 25775 - '+I' if AQQQ 5' K .g I fi , Ay, Y , A1 ' ' 4 f! mwz via gr., ' ' A ' 'Ll -5 g rl! Booster Club Popcorn for sale was heard this football season from the peppy Booster club members who sold popcorn at this year's football games. They also tied for first place in the Viking Day parade with the theme Key to Victory. Among the other many activities was their annual Christmas dance called Snowflake Swirl. The theme was car- ried out with a lovely winter scene on one end of the gym and a giant snow- flake in the middle. individual snow- flakes could be seen throughout the en- tire gym giving it the true air of a snow- flake swirl. March 9th was the date when an ar- ray of delightful spring fashions appeal- ing to both young and old, but with an emphasis on teen-age clothes, was shown. K Barb Eskelin models spring clothes at Q4 -69- the spring fashion show. Donna Smith and Norma Johnson get ready for the faculty luncheon. Coquina Club To start out the annual season of ac tivities, the Coquina Club float with the theme Wings to Victory tied for first place in the Viking Day parade. Their queen candidate, Carol Lettenstrom, was chosen as attendant for the homecoming dance. ln November, nineteen new members were taken into the club and an informal initiation followed. On December l8, their formal initiation was held in the Coolidge room. You probably saw the pennants that were waved around school and at bas- ketball games this year. They were sold by members of the Coquina club as their annual money making project. Then in the spring came the Coquina club's annual Cotton hop dance. In May two events took place, the Mother's tea and the senior banquet. They also had many candy sales, a rum- mage sale, and contributed a gift to the school. 85' Y Te 'denii Gangnonithiiitpsf R0 'ce P h Hulier s l-Ucas n, V' No et Roac nd row Tren Of Jvhnso Yoder' presi non, rowkbsanh C. secrelawl N. Unbelievable as it may seem, the Echo as it is seen now began with little more than a few blank sheets of paper the size of an Echo page, sharp pencils, rulers, and some ideas-both good and bad. They not only won the mythical city championship, but finished head of the lakes competition on the top of the standings, with 9 wins and one loss. Their only HO'L loss was to the Denfeld Hunters in the 3rd game of the season, 66-64. The Purple and White ended regular season's play with a 14 won, 2 lost record. They scored a record-breaking 1,081 points to their opponents 839, for an average of 67.6 to their foes' 52.5. Central started out the season strongly, with the decisive 75-44 conquest of the Ashland Ore- dockers. They also won their second game by defeating Duluth East in similar fashion. It was then that Denfeld edged the Vikings, but after suffering this loss the Olsonmen came back strong. They won 11 consecutive games and were finally nipped by Ashland, 58-57, in the next to last regular season game. They closed their schedule by clobbering the Hurley Midgets, 114- 83-53. Coach Norm Olson's record at Central High School, a very commendable one, stood at 105 wins and 51 losses at the season's end. He won his 100th game of his Central career when his Vikings overwhelmed Cathedral's Panthers,, 60-41, in the 10th game of the year. The top 6 scorers for Central were: Bob Ol- 338 points, 21.1 point average, Pat Tierney, 12.3 average, Ron Schultz, 195, 12.3 aver- son, 196, age, Stan Ladich, 120, 7.5 average, Ken Richard- 87, 5.5 average, and Jack Stark, 62, 3.9 son, average. The '53-'54 Vikings were one of the most well-balanced squads seen at Central in years. At one time during the season they reached the top of the United Press Wisconsin Prep standings, Big Sixteen. In the final United Press polls, the Sweet Sixteen, they were ranked 3rd. They entered tournament play as one of the most fear- ed teams in Northern Wisconsin. Junior Varsity Central High School's B-team showed heartening promise during the past season. They concluded the season with ii wins and 3 losses, and plenty of valuable experience. The B-team was coached by Norm Olson with the assistance of Don Strommer, a new- comer to the Central faculty. High scorers for the B-team were Charley Allen with l32 points, a 9.5 per game aver- age and Gene Evens, 112 points and an 8 point average. Jerry Correll, Harold Ander- son, and Jack Lundgren were the next high scorers with 6, 5.2, and 4.6 points per game averages respectively. Coach Norm Olson . . . the main block in our team. B Team. Central's Vikings entered the sub-regional tournament March 3 and 4, at Ashland, as a favorite. The Vikings came through in excellent form, clobbering Maple 80-46, then coming from behind to squeeze by Ashland, 64-63. They met Hurley on March 6 to decide the regional cham- pionship and easily trompled the Midgets, 74-56, to gain a sectional berth. The Purple and White again as a favorite in the Spooner tournament defeated Rice Lake, 73-64, and Westboro, 74-57, to emerge as Sec- tional Tournament Champs. Thus the Vikings won their 21st trip to the Madison state tourna- ments on March 18, 19, and 20. Central's first foe at Madison was St. Croix Falls. The Vikings made an inspired comeback in this game to win, 58-54. In the second game with the Tomah Indians, the Olsonmen were nam- ed the underdogs, but they came through and scalped the Indians, 80-61, to enter the State Championship Finals. Again rated as underdogs the Vikings fought their hearts out and led by one point at the half. But regardless of their terrific efforts, the Vikings fell before the towering height and torrid shoot- ing of the Saints, 70-65. state runners-up champs. Central's Newest Sport Swimming Seventeen Centralites were members of the newly organized swimming team this year. Mr. Whitmore, advisor and coach, organized the swimming team last year. They met for swimming practice each Mon- day and Thursday after school at the Civic Cen- ter swimming pool. The season lasted from the middle of November to late in February. Although only a limited number of meets were scheduled, the swimming squad showed much ability. Two meets were held with Duluth Denfeld and Central swimmers defeated them both times, the first with a 24-23 score and the second with a 30-25 score. Central lost to Du- luth Central by a 40-25 score and in a meet be- tween the three schools Central placed second. Outstanding performers on the team were George Wastila, captain, and Herbert Strack. Dick Larson was manager of the team. Swimming team enjoys the facilities of the Civic Center pool. Starting in the middle of December the curlers were only able to enjoy this sport for five weeks. The Bill Solin rink was in the lead at the end of the short curling season. This year 60 Centralites, including 21 girls and 39 boys, turned out to participate in curling. Twelve teams or rinks were formed composed of five members each. Members of a rink in- clude the skip, third, second, lead, and alternate. The Central curling league used the facilities Nancy Jackson hurls the rock down the rink. and equipment of the Superior Curling Club. Mr. Robert Gradin completed his sixth year as advisor to this group. Curling enthusiasts Jim and Jerry con- centrate on the skips signal. Henry Gingras swoops with all his might as team members look on. Catherine, Bill, Don, Roger, and John decide who will get the point. Worli and Play Together ln.. Basketball is one of many sports that all three girls gym classes partake. It is well liked and eventually well played. They hold tournaments which make it much more interest- Tumbling Oof and over she goes. There are quite a few girls that enjoy tumbling and have a lot of fun doing it. This sport pertains most- ly to the sophomore class but the iuniors and freshmen spend a short time or it also. Ping Pong Ping pong is a new sport to the girls phy- sical education classes and is widely enjoyed. This is probably one of the most enioyed sports played by teen-agers today. There were also tournaments held in ping pong with partners. -126- ing to the girls. It is about the only sport played all year that shows so much pep and enthusiasm by the girls. Volleyball Another sport that all three girls gym classes take part in is volley ball. This sport arouses a lot of pep and enthusiasm among the girls and there were a wide variety ot tournaments held. They were mostly be- tween the gym classes and were held after school. This goes to show that the girls must have really liked it in order to come in on their own time to participate. Archery The sophomores have a great treat when it comes time to partake in the sport of ar- chery. This is well liked by all the girls and they really work to hit that bulls-eye. Your form and the way you hold your bow are just as important as the shooting itself. Good Clean Fun ' Y. Basketball is played throughout the win- ter in all boy's gym classes. Dress Right!
