Miss O'Brien taught language arts and advised the L. D. P. club. During her ten years here, she continually proved herself to be a sin- cere friend -and an understanding instructor. Her warm smile, high ideals, and enthusiasm were an incentive to her students and associates. To those who knew her, the loss is great, but there is comfort in the knowledge of her influence on the students who have entered and left her classroom during her career. -4. in I I 'i 4 i I i Ec-:cliccctc-:cl , to o 4 0 Q o o o Q 0 one ov. we Cmr. fouio Cmeier for 24 years of service in the music department at Central, for composing the lyrics to our school song, March on Old Central, for such other memorable songs as Talli-Hi and Long, Long Agof, for directing our splendid organiza- tions: the junior choir, senior choir, Triple Trio, and Vocal Ensemble, for giving many hours of his spare time on projects for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of the community, and for his generosity, his whole- hearted participation in school af- fairs, his humor, his unselfish atti- tude, all of which have been a part of our school life . . . gratefully dedicate the 1951 Echo. ...5.. .ln Mr. George E. The Athenaes, members of Central's oldest club, strive to promote social activities. To do this they planned a mothers' tea, faculty luncheon, and informal and formal initiations. This was the topic that Central's debate team debated with Cloquet, Duluth Denfeld, Duluth Cathe- dral and at the state district meet in Chip- pewa Falls. K The debate team is growing rapidly. This year more students than ever before tried out. There were 20 members on the team, ranging from freshmen to seniors. Freshmen starting out have an advantage over upperclassmen, for by the time they are seniors, they will have had enough experience to be top de- baters. Much time and preparation was spent in organizing and preparing the debates. Cpccclio ommiooion Direct, instruct, inform-these are duties of the members of Central's radio commission. Under the supervision of Mr. Lyle Maves, 17 students were selected from the many ap- plicants who tried out at the beginning of the school term. The applicants were judged on tone quality, diction, and clearness of voice. Every second hour Centralites heard, Here are your announcements for today. Larsen evades his pursuers as he nears the double stripe. Gene Herubin End Coach Conley sketches football maneuvers as he and Coach Olson discuss the next game. Coach Harry Conley did a creditable job this year building his squad around only four returning lettermen. With the whole varsity squad lost by graduation, the Vikings com- pleted a tough seven-game schedule with three wins against four losses. The Conley- men scored 72 total points as compared with 142 for their opponents. EAU CLAIRE In the first encounter of the season, the Vikings received a severe setback by the Eau Claire Old Abes, 40-20. Leaving the field at halftime faced with a 33-7 deficit, the purple and white crew grew determined in the final half and scored twice while holding its op- ponents to one more score. Stan Parzych toted the pigskin 34 yards through the center of the line and across the double stripes for the first score. George Hanson smashed through the entire downstate team on a 46- yard drive to pay-dirt. Don Larsen complet- ed the scoring on a 19-yard scamper around end. He also added two conversions. DULUTH CATHEDRAL Determined to avenge their first loss, the Conleymen turned back the Duluth Cathedral Hilltoppers 6-0. Ron Tuverson carried the slippery ball 15 yards through mud and op- ponents before he crossed the goal line, giv- ing the Centralites a hard-earned victory. Both lines made a very creditable showing as they slashed into their opponents' backfield to strip the runner of his interference and pave the way for a team mate to bowl over the runner. DULUTH DENFELD Homecoming turned out to be a sad affair for the home team as it was struck down 44-6 by the Denfeld Hunters. The old story of the Vikings not being able to win a homecoming game became more dominant. With Don Lar- sen scoring from 41 yards out, it looked as if 194-. he might inspire the boys and set them on their way to victory. But it proved to be the only score of the one-sided grid battle. Fum- bles and a loose pass defense proved fatal for the outclassed Vikings. ASHLAND On the Ashland Oredockers' mud-ridden field, the Central boys defeated the Oredock- ers 14-0. Midway through the second period Danny Laux plunged over from the four-yard line for Central's first marker. Don Larsen broke into the clear in the last quarter and zig-zagged 31 yards to pay-dirt. Larsen add- ed both points after the touchdowns. The Vikings' defensive unit performed brilliantly as they held Ashland to five first downs. At times it was impossible to distinguish either teams' players or the sideline markers be- cause of the poor weather conditions. EAST A In the game of the year, the Vikings sub- dued a fighting East High football squad 19-12. The Vikings added single scores in each of the first, third, and final quarters. After recovering an East fumble on the Ori- ental 29-yard line, the Vikings scored on three plays with Don Larsen crossing the double stripe from nine yards out. Danny Laux add- ed the second tally on a beautiful spinner that covered 54 yards. Don Larsen scored the final Viking marker as he legged it 66 yards to the promised land. Larsen also added one conversion. DULUTH CENTRAL The mighty Duluth Central Trojans took the measure of the Vikings, 33-7, in their an- nual tussle. Up against superior weight, blocking, and running, the Centralites were able to score only one touchdown. Stan Par- zych ran 53 yards through the entire Trojan team for the lone tally. Ronny Schultz added a perfect conversion. The hillbillies showed much power as they scored on five long runs and added three extra points. HURLEY In the season's final for both squads, the Hurley Midgets shut out the hometown boys 13-0 with the Midgets' Bob Johnson scoring all of his team's points. Aggressive Florian Helinski, I-Iurley's flashy quarterback, had the entire Viking backfield in a turmoil as he completed 13 of 22 passes, keeping the Mid- gets in Viking territory throughout most of the game. Hurley had the game under con- trol throughout the fray as its powerful de- fensive unit kept the Vikings in the shadows of their own goalposts. N ,M e Q W Inv, , I' A V 4 lhmlx rl l ' ,. W J. ... The Viking gridders prepare to call it a day after a hard-fought victory. Coach Norman Olson, head basket- ball mentor, has just completed his fifth season at Central. Although he compiled a mediocre record this year, his five-year record is very impres- sive. His teams have won 63 games and have dropped only 35 contests. Mr. Olson has a bright outlook for his future teams. He pointed out, Many grade schools are now instruct- ing their pupils the fundamentals of basketball. If these kids are taught how to handle a basketball before they come to high school, our school will develop better teams in the near future. Mr. Olson received his masters de- gree from the University of Wiscon- sin last summer. While completing his college years at Wisconsin, Mr. Olson played the keystone sack for the baseball team of his alma mater. In high school at Middleton and Madison West he also played basketball and football. -,.,. A V . S dBack row: G. Anderson, C. Charlie Anderson carried the brunt of the attack as he led his teammates through the rough 19-game schedule as he countered 103 field goals and 90 charity tosses for 296 points. Central won the mythical city champion- ship by dumping East High twice and split- ting two contests with the Cathedral Panthers. In the season's first encounter, Coach Nor- man Olson pitted his aggregation against the Denfeld Hunters and emerged with a 60-37 victory. Cathedral upset Central's apple cart edging the Vikings 36-31 in the second hoop game. Having squeezed by the Ashland Ore- dockers 48-46, Central trounced the smaller Two Harbors prepsters, 64-32. Then they de- feated East, staging a last quarter rally to win 55-47. Superior once again was represented in Minneapolis as the Vikings bowed to a group of Owatonna, Minnesota cagers 53-45 in Wil- liams Arena. The mighty Hurley Midgets fell before the Viking machine 49-46. Duluth Central then humbled the Vikings as they outfought, out- shot, and outrebounded their cross-bay rivals, 68-33. Another Duluth quintet-Duluth Ca- thedral-turned back the Vikings by a 46-41 score. It was the first loss for the Vikings on Central's home court in three years. Central turned in four straight triumphs during the latter part of the season. They took East to the cleaners by a 48-39 score, outfought Cathedral 40-37 in the only over- time game of the year, trounced Two Harbors 48-36 on the Northshore court, and added to their laurels by beating Ashland for the sec- ond time, 49-38. In a southern Wisconsin road trip, Central was turned back twice. First the powerful Eau Claire outfit did the trick 75-53 and the following night it was La Crosse by 43-42. The Little Big Ten champion, Duluth Cen- tral, dropped the Vikings 58-45 in the last scheduled encounter of the season. The WIAA regional toumament was held at Ashland. Central overpowered the North- western of Maple hoopsters 66-43 and defeat- ed its crosstown rivals, East High, 47-44 the following evening. Hurley eliminated the Vikings from further competition by beating them 58-50. The Vikings compiled 914 total points while holding their opponents to 882. This gave them a 48-point average per game and 46 points for their opposition. During the regular campaign the Vikings garnered '751 points and their opponents, 7,37 points. -37+ 1 FA EW Sfnwn Quad I 9 Evans ave-vd 9 Duck Nolcm center C3Gma J-Ubehvl fbrmoxd L GEOYQQ U Chuck HHJEY SON :DVR oy! 9 jffie' OLJGY Back row: Meier, Allen, Hagman, Norman, R.
