It took a lot of work and it was a lot of fun. And with lost school days because of the coal shortage, we got a little behind schedule, but Mr. Coats urged us on with kind words and a heavy hand. It had as its policy the dissemination of school news, school gossip (slander), alumni news, and various tidbits of current interest. Special features during the year were the senior silhouettes and the cover contest at Christmas time. STAFF AS PICTURED FIRST Row—D. Egolf, Art Editor; Miss Noffsinger, Sponsor; T. After-the-game-dances were sponsored by Cen-Hi-Sun as a means of raising operating funds. Visiting schools were invited to attend these dances. At the game just before the Christmas vacation Central Alumni were special guests. Alumni were registered as they entered the building and were given tags to wear during the evening as a means of identification and bearing the year the person graduated. Besides the officers listed elsewhere on this page, other members of Cen-Hi-Sun included the remaining members of the senior English classes. Congratulations to the Class of 1950—Big Four Elevator Armstrong's Electric Pege Thirteen SUNSHINE The society started the year with a great burst of sunshine for all except the poor pledges who had to don such hideous costumes for the occasion. But after the formal initiation every one could look forward to a promising year. The main project for the year was making toys and scrapbooks for the children at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. The annual Ma-Pa-and-Me banquet was held in February. It was greatly enjoyed by everyone. The Sock-Hop was held in March with proceeds going to the Riley fund. This event is always looked forward to eagerly. The programs for the regular meetings were planned by committees appointed by the girls. There were guest speakers, musical programs given by the members, and several skits by the dramatics committee. OFFICERS President . . . Dorma Crcecy Vice President . . Merlee Kerr Secretary . . They began their social year with the Hi-Y hayride. After arriving at LcffcTs woods everyone enjoyed an inviting campfire while refreshments were served. “Understanding Religion,” was adopted as a theme for the year. With this in consideration, they heard a protestant minister and a catholic priest, but were unable to get a Jewish Rabbi as intended. A series of talks was given on social guidance by Professor Reimon of Manchester College. A caroling party was planned around Christmas time but due to inclement weather it was canceled. The highlight of the year was the annual Hi-Y “Best Girl Banquet.” This year it was held at the Sportsman’s Club at Beaver Dam, after which most couples went somewhere to dance or take in a movie. The themes for the meetings of the Sunbeam Society for this year were hobbies and the development of the teen age personality. The group was divided into as many committees as there were meetings and each committee was made responsible for one meeting. Each committee was given an opportunity to select the meeting for which they would be responsible. • At Christmas time the group took over the project of selling decorative cones and wreaths as a means to raise money for the regular meetings and the two parties. The Christmas party was held at school. The girls exchanged gifts, had a serious program, then had an entertainment SUNBEAMS which everyone enjoyed very much. The spring party was held at the Honeywell Memorial skating rink and the junior high school boys were guests. Page Sixteen Wing’s Flowers—Flowers for All Occasions Johnson Marathon Station J R. Ill-Y The Jr. Hi-Y consists of the younger boys at Central which meets once a month. School boys have as one of their primary interests athletics. As basketball is Centrals major sport the Jr. Hi-Y's first speaker of the year was our new coach, Burt Niles. Mr. Niles talked of the importance of training and of the benefits of it. The spring sport, track, offers more boys an opportunity to participate and again Coach Niles was given an opportunity to sell that athletic program. Mr. Dierdorf told of his war experiences while in the service, and Reverand Conkling talked to the boys about the things revealed by one’s individual hand writing. The schedule of the Jr. Hi-Y was somewhat affected by the interruption of school this year, although they had a variety in the program. The season was concluded by a musical program consisting of records as recorded by Mr. and Mrs. Freed in their work with Homer Rode-heaver during the summer. OFFICERS President .... The meeting was held in Central auditorium and was transcribed for later release over the air. After both the negative and affirmative sides from both schools had presented their cases, questions from the audience were answered. I) E B A T E The debate class this year consisted of one negative and one affirmative team. Virginia Mote and Dorothy Ward represented the negative and Carole Longo and Majorie Bright, the affirmative. Due to the closing of school on account of the coal shortage, the teams participated in only one tournament, the one held at Central. Not only was the membership larger but the performing ability was also greater than that of preceding organizations. The first public performance for the year was at the dedication of the new highway bridge across Eel River. A few weeks later the band played and marched at a Manchester College football game. The organization participated in the fall and spring concerts at school. On April 1 they won a superior rating at the district band contest at Hartford City and on April 15 participated in the State Band Contest at Plymouth. The results of that contest were not available when the En-Em went to press. A trip through the Conn instrument factory at Elkhart proved a most interesting venture to all members. Market—Best Wishes to the Seniors of 1950 Identification of Senior Officers Dean Tyner, Vice President Louise Miller, Secretary Dorma Creecy, Treasurer Dick Reiff, President A Pocket of Memories THE HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS As we look over the last six years that we spent in the halls of Central, we find that these things stand foremost in our minds. We remember when we were introduced to the halls of Central and how scared we were about having to go from class to class instead of staying in one room like we did in grade school. We remember our first class dance when we were in the 8th grade. We thought that we were really big stuff. And then came that big picnic we had in the spring of our freshman year down at the Salamonie State Park and what fun everybody had falling down the river bank! In our junior year we broke into big business and made our first thousand on the b’llgames, the carnival, and then that big St. Patrick's Day Dance where we were so proud of those decorations. But the biggest thrill of all was when as seniors we had the run of the row—well, at least a little more than the year before. When we ordered our graduation announcements, it gave us a funny feeling, but the planning of our senior trip gave us great expectations. Yes, we have our pocketful of memories.
