ALMA MATER There ' s a school we ' ll cherish ever By the river side. In our hearts she ' ll reign forever. Be our fondest pride; Many lessons she has taught us Honor, faith, and truth; Many joys she too has brought us; Glorified our youth. - i:}i:ji-, - j_ Words: Mary E. DUMAREE, our energetic and understanding principal, came to us in the fall of 1952 from South High School. We are fortunate to have him as our Capiain ai the Helm Genevieve Griffith Vice JPrincipa Is Harold Washburn E X E C IJ T I V E O F F I C E R fffnff nil ' Scioio Reilcctions We dipped into the past as far as the eye could see, Saw the visions that were yesteryears — the things that used to be. Saw our High School have its origin, 1847 was the date, When first superintendent, Asa Lord, opened higher learning ' s golden gate. The enrollment increasing from year to year, moved the State Street building to a different sod; Many a chuckle and many a tear were experienced, at the high school on Sixth and Broad. We advanced to the period called Central High; the year 1892 And we see the first team to wear our colors — make a striking red and black debut. In nineteen hundred and one, Glee Club, Debate Teams and Class Night were begun. Nine years later in 1910 — the building ' s name was changed again, The High School of Commerce pioneered the way, to make our Central, what she is today. 1920, first vice-principal Edith Bell was instated; two years later the ANNUAL was created. 1924 saw new Central ready to bear the fruits that her pre- decessors had sown with such care. So onward we go! To the river Scioto! We see Central High School in all her splendor, ready to en- fold us in her grey arms so tender, At his desk is C. L. Dumaree, our principal. Whose kindness and fortitude remain invincible. We look upon the faculty; they number 62 in all We thank the Holy Divinity that they answered the teaching call. We see the auditorium where we sit assembly days We watch the Friday Frolics, operettas and drama plays. Our newspaper, the OUTLOOK, is good to see. Likewise our yearbook, the DOUBLOON. We hear Senior Choir, the radio broadcasts and watch the movie at noon. The clubs are next — though too numerous to write, Are stars of our past that will always shine bright. We visit the shops on the ground floor. Then we dash for the cafeteria as in days of yore. Pete the Pirate smiling down at us, makes lunchtime and happy- time synomymous. We see the football field, baseball diamond and the track And for a moment or two our memories go fondly back — To Homecoming, the band, the crowds, the cheers And our athletes whose courage and honor are undaunted by fears. We think of Central and our three years here. And the awakened memories bring forth a tear, because We, the class of ' 54, are proud to hove docked on Central ' s shore; We, as the famed Pirates of old, have found our treasure a thousand-fold. And like our God who dwells in the sky. We know the spirit of Central will never die! By Barbara Hermann They J avigate GEORGE ANDERSON Printing FLOYD L. It wasn ' t until 1925 that Student Council was formed. Thus our school is student gov- erned by a council which promotes well-being and cooperation among teachers and students. Student Court The purpose of Student Court is to guide the wayward pirates onto safe shores, in other words, to right the wrong and to help prevent mistakes. A Student Court member has to be elected by his homeroom, screened by the advisor and approved by the other teachers. Jane Reamer, the new advisor, began serving the second semester of ' 54. The chief justice presides over the meetings. The records are kept by the secretary and clerk. The judges present the case, and the bailiffs take the student offender to the court room. Court meets the third period every day. Kent Pfeiffer worked faithfully with court for the past 10 years. C O FIRST ROW, left to right: D. Woybrighl, M. Anc erson, G. Fraime, chief justice; N. Miss Lewis, the librarian, chooses her staff from those who like to work with books, whose grades are above average, and who has a study hall daily. I ivin Pirate Tom Pentello W ■ ' ■-- ' - L t , - . f ■ Jim Baliy Displaying power and speed along with a stone wall defense, Central ' s football Pirates came up with one of their most commendable seasons in 1953, compiling a record of seven wins while dropping only two. This squad was made up for the most part of the same members as the 1952 team which ended up in the league cellar and won only one game. That year ' s experience, coupled with a determination to win, established the Bucs as the most rever- ed aggregation in the city. After dropping their opener to Steubenville, 25-2, the Pirates bounced back to route a good St. Charles team, 34-6. From then on the Bucs began to roll, and lead by junior quarterback, Joe Morion, spurted to six straight vic- tories, five of which were over the city league opponents. Central ' s ground gome was by far the greatest asset. Running from the short punt, it was highlighted by Morion ' s line punching, Don Brooks ' quick openers. Gene Bennett ' s and Paul Schooley ' s broken-field dashes, and George An- krum ' s explosive downfield blocking. But the key reason for the success of the backfield rozzle dazzle was the Pirates ' fast and experienced forward wall. The line was spearheaded by such All-City men as Don Harris, Ralph Holderman, Gene Roszmon, llm Carmon, Sam Webb and Don Bargdill. Also doing their shore of the iob were Taylor Trimble, Jim Emmitt, Phil Pertee, Chuck McCompbell, Paul Oates, Harry Chodwick and sophomores Tom Pentello and Frank Burton. (DISPATCH photo) 81 Riverside Gene Bennett Coach Koterba Though not a City League power house, Central ' s Cage Pirates did provide their fans with some exciting and scrappy basketball during the 1953-54 season. Showing signs of disappointment at times, the Pirates just couldn ' t seem to hit their stride against their larger and more-experienced City League oppon- ents. For example, in games at North, South and Linden the Bucs, though playing smooth and aggressive ball, were no match; as the Bulldogs, Bears and Pan- thers hit a terrific percentage of their shots and were not to be outdone. On other occasions, however, there was a change of pace. The Bucs displayed speed and tranquility in pulling stunning upset victories over Portsmouth, 50-42, Lancaster St. Mary, 70-58, and West, 70-50. As far as individual performance, it must be all at- tributed to senior Don Harris and junior Chuck Mc- Campbell. Harris, a consistant scorer, led the team in point making. McCampbell, right behind Harris in scoring, was the Pirate ploy maker. Mm Carmon and BIN Smith, although never scoring threats, were both big men under the boards as well as defensive specialists. Cormon ' s key achievement being against North, as he limited the Bears ' great center, Jim Franklin, to two baskets. Other members of the squad who contributed to the cause were juniors Don Robinson, Gene Bennett, and sophomores Dove Chandler, Jim Slaughter, and Gene Jordon. Jordon and Robinson were starters while Chandler, Slaughter, and Bennett saw considerable action. With these five experienced men returning next year it might serve as an indication that Chuck Koter- ba ' s Pirates ore going to give their opponents a run for their money in the coming season. BACK ROW: Ralph Holderman, Don Harris, Don Threatt, Wiliord Littlefield, Gene Jordon, Dick Caldwell. Head Coach Frank Howe and Athletic Director Guy Kesler. The 1953 track story was much the same as it is every year. The Pirate cindermen seem to have a keen knack for track, and once again came up with a successful epoch last spring. They completed the regular campaign undefeated in dual meets, an accomplishment which is by far nothing new to them. Why do the Pirates year after year have either a champion or first division team? One rea- son is that they get a wealth of talent from Everett, Mound, and Starling Jr. Highs; and the other is the very able coaching of Frank Howe. Among the standouts of last year ' s squad were John and Newton Foster, both of whom were city champions in their respective field. John was the high hurdle winner while Newton came out on top in the 880 yard run. Other winners were Don Harris who tied for first in the City high jump, Bill Smith tied for first in the District high jump, Ralph Holderman tied for first in the District pole vault, and Mm Carmon who was second in the District discus throw. The mile relay team made up of Frank Burton, Don Harris, Sam Webb, and Willard Littlefield, won a third spot in the district meet. As well as being unbeaten in dual meets, the Sues won third place in both City and Hilltop Relays, which, when added up, spells out a prosperous season. 86 19 i3 Btisehall Returning baseball lettermen include, left to riglit: Larry Edington, Jim Hakes, Joe Morion, Jim Kountz, Don Fluor, and Harry Chadwick. Once again in 1953 the Pirates came up with a top-notch baseball team. The Parksmen finished in third place in the City League race while copping the runnerup spot in the District Tournament. After getting off to a slow start, the Bucs came back srong, winning their last seven city contests. The leader in this mid-and-late season spurt was the Pirates ' brilliant catcher, Joe Morion. Morion, also a standout on the gridiron, was the league ' s top backstop in addition to topping the circuit in homeruns. It was Morion ' s shiny handling of Buc pitchers, Jim Kountz, Pete Cook, and Lorry Edington that was a determining factor of the spree. Other big men in the attack were shortstop, Jerry Martin; outfielders, Don Brooks, Phil Orem, Don Fluor; and firstbaseman, John O ' Doy. Martin was on All-City choice and lead the team in hitting with .327 batting overage. The tournament found the Pirates fighting their way to the finals before dropping a close 5-A decis- ion to Newark. With the return of such lettermen as Morion, Fluor, Kountz, Edington, Orem, Jim Hakes, Harry Charwick and juniors Ernie Mawhirter and Harry Burris, the Bucs ' chance for a fruitful ' 54 seem very bright. Coach Dave Parks 87 All-Ciiy C ntralites The 1953-54 sports year found many outstanding individual per- formers on the Pirate athletic fields. Topping the list was Don Harris, a 6 ' 165 lb. speedster who ex- celled in football, basketball and track. Don was an All-City man in football, city high jump champion in track and a member of the varsity cage squad for three years. His finest efforts, however, were put forth on the gridiron, and as a result of his fine play he was named to the INS All Ohio third team as end. Don ' s biggest thrill came in the Steubeneville game when he intercepted four Big Red passes and was a constant pest to the Steubenville air attack. Another big star was Joe Mor- lan, one of the best athletes to come out of Central in recent years. Joe was a member of All- City teams in both baseball and football. As a gridder he display- ed keen leadership and served as the Pirate quarterback and field general. In baseball he was the Bucs ' regular catcher for three years. Joe, who is 5 ' 10 tail and weighs a sturdy 200 pounds Is only a junior and has another big year of football remaining which should prove to be his best. Other All City men coming out of our riverside school were Ralph Holderman, Sam Webb, Dan Bargdill, llm Carman in football; John and Newt Foster, and 6 Smith in track; Chuck McCampbell in basketball and Jerry Martin in baseball. How different behind the iron curtain! There, the people have no such protection. And even a solid oak door, strong enough to guard a fortress, can ' t keep out the secret police. Because we Americans take our rights for granted, it ' s hard to believe that there are pinkos and fellow-travelers amongst us who want to take away our freedom from search without warrant. It ' s just part of their plan to steal all our rights, like the right to own property, the right to work wherever we please, the right to vote secretly and all the rest.
