BUSINESS EDUCATION In 1942, sequences in the Business Education Department were set up to guide students interested in making business or office work their vocation after completing high school or termi- nating their formal education in a busi- ness college or in a short course at an academic college, such as Western Michigan University. Four sequences were outlined: General Clerical, Retail- ing, Stenography, and Bookkeeping. The first year, the 10th grade, is the same for all sequences except Steno- graphy. This means that a student usually does not need to decide on a definite sequence or line of specializa- tion until his junior year at Central. The General Clerical sequence has a lesser amount of specialization, the Bookkeeping sequence requires two full years of Bookkeeping, and the Secre- tarial or Stenographic sequence requires two full years of Stenography.

MUSIC AND ART Music and art have long been a part of the Central scene. Art classes di- rected by Miss Mildred Johnson turn out the future artists whose talents we have already witnessed on posters during campaigns, plays and subscrip- tion drives. Many of the winners of the annual Safety Contest have also been Centralites. The music department is divided into three sections: Robed Choir, Orchestra, and Band. The Robed Choir, a highly selective group of singers, has sung at many of our assemblies as well as hav- ing appeared at the Christmas and Eas- ter assemblies. Our orchestra, though small, is doing its share in supplying music between acts at the plays, and entertaining the P.T.S.A. The band is perhaps the largest of our musical or- ganizations. This in itself is divided into the Marching and Concert Bands. In addition to supplying music for the games, parades, and assemblies, it has the job of producing the annual Band Follies. l uulllgluu '55 A N hit .,.. HOMEMAKING Future housewives gain training in fields such as cooking, sewing, and nurs- ingg fields which will play an important part of their married life. In the clothing classes, girls learn the basic points of a well-constructed garment, the advantages of sewing to obtain a large wardrobe on a small bud- get, and the selection of durable ma- terials. Buying techniques, table setting, eco- nomical buying of food, and, of course, the art of cooking are important parts of the foods course. Home nursing, a relatively new sub- ject, teaches the future homemakers practical nursing as well as the art of improvising when there is a sick person in the home.
