fl .Iii SOCIAL SCIENCE In the tenth grade, students learn about the conditions and changes of the Old World in their World History course which is a stepping-stone to the understanding of the history of the United States which is offered in the eleventh grade. Starting with the dis- covery of the 'tNew World by Spanish explorers, the students are led along the road which fashioned present-day America. Upon reaching the twelfth grade, sen- iors have the option of choosing either World Heritage or Government and Economics. In the former, the only course of its kind in the nation, the course of study is divided into four parts: literature, history, philosophy, and cosmology. The latter gives the stu- dent a working knowledge of govern- mental control in state and local gov- ernments, income tax, foreign policy, and basis of the economic systems of many other important fields.

SCIENCE In the past few years, science has become increasingly important in the educational pro- gram of the entire nation. Central's Science Department, which was already an important part of the curriculum, has grown and expanded to meet the increasing need. Three courses are offered in this department: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Biology, usually studied in the tenth grade, is a study of the science of life. Chemistry, an eleventh grade subject, probes the science of the corn- position of matter and its transformations. In the twelfth grade, a science major is completed with the study of physics which is the study of matter and energy. ,...--I R1 'n,,..,..

MUSIC AND ART Music and art have long been a part of the Central scene. Art classes di- rected by Miss Mildred Johnson turn out the future artists whose talents we have already witnessed on posters during campaigns, plays and subscrip- tion drives. Many of the winners of the annual Safety Contest have also been Centralites. The music department is divided into three sections: Robed Choir, Orchestra, and Band. The Robed Choir, a highly selective group of singers, has sung at many of our assemblies as well as hav- ing appeared at the Christmas and Eas- ter assemblies. Our orchestra, though small, is doing its share in supplying music between acts at the plays, and entertaining the P.T.S.A. The band is perhaps the largest of our musical or- ganizations. This in itself is divided into the Marching and Concert Bands. In addition to supplying music for the games, parades, and assemblies, it has the job of producing the annual Band Follies. l uulllgluu '55 A N hit .,..
