LANGUAGE ARTS In this modern day, mastery of langu- ages has become a necessity. Therefore, Central offers a wide variety of lan- guages to contribute to a well-rounded education of the students. To date, there are six courses offered: English, German, French, Latin, Span- ish, and Russian. Students are allowed to choose their languagefsj, with the exception of English, which is compul- sory. English equips the students with a basic knowledge of their language and literature. The period of study for foreign lan- guages is two years. In German, French, and Spanish, the students are taught the language and customs of the country. In Latin, the students gain an under- standing of the basis of the Romance Languages and they read actual source material about the Gallic Wars. Latin is now offered for three years. An im- portant newcomer to the Language Arts Department is Russian. Central is one of the few high schools in the nation of- fering this subject. 5 .14 ss

bca' MATHEMATICS 'Rithmetic has always been one of the basic 3 R's of learning. Today it is more important than ever, and its im- portance is steadily increasing. Students may elect a math sequence toward the completion of either a col- lege preparatory course or a prebusiness plan of study. A college preparatory math major usually includes algebra, which treats the relations and properties of numbersg plane and solid geometry, tl1e study of solids, planes, lines, and anglesg and trigonometry, which deals with the properties of triangles. Physics may also be counted toward a mathe- matics major. Math in pre-business courses would involve business and shop math. Re- fresher math is also offered to any stu- dent in need of review.
