LANGUAGE ARTS In this modern day, mastery of langu- ages has become a necessity. Therefore, Central offers a wide variety of lan- guages to contribute to a well-rounded education of the students. To date, there are six courses offered: English, German, French, Latin, Span- ish, and Russian. Students are allowed to choose their languagefsj, with the exception of English, which is compul- sory. English equips the students with a basic knowledge of their language and literature. The period of study for foreign lan- guages is two years. In German, French, and Spanish, the students are taught the language and customs of the country. In Latin, the students gain an under- standing of the basis of the Romance Languages and they read actual source material about the Gallic Wars. Latin is now offered for three years. An im- portant newcomer to the Language Arts Department is Russian. Central is one of the few high schools in the nation of- fering this subject. 5 .14 ss
