CentraI's Past 1859- Old Union building was dedicated with an enrollment of 129 students. 1874 1876 1863- 1870- -Circuit Judge Charles R. Brown ruled against taxpayer Charles E. The first high school class graduated eight seniors. An earthquake occurred in the fall. Stuart in the controversy regarding the use of public funds for maintenance of a high school. This blazed the trail for public support of high schools through taxation throughout the entire old Northwest Territory. This is better known as the Kalamazoo Case. -Scientific and modern languages were added to the high school cur- riculum in addition to the Classical course and English course. 1880-The Old Union was condemned and torn down. 1884 1881- -'The Occidentf' the earliest Central High School paper of which there A new high school building was erected. is record, began publication. 1893-Battle Creek challenged local high schools to a football contest. 1897 1899- -The high school was destroyed by fire and school was held in the Y.M.C.A. Manual Training course began. 1905-First issue of the Delphian was published. 1913- A new building was erected on Vine Street. 1924-The present Central High School building was finished. 1934 1943 1945 1948 1949 -Schools faced acute financial crisis due to the depression, and school closed three weeks early because of lack of necessary funds. The Del- phian was rated first by the National Inter-Scholastic Press Association. The Delphian was rated first for the second year in a row. 1935- -Curriculum changed to meet the needs of boys and girls who were to enter industry or armed services. Canteens were begun. -Mr. W. F. Head resigned and Eugene Thomas became principal of Central. -All-State honors were given to the Delphian, the highest award in the state. -Central's basketball team won the state Class A championship against Saginaw Arthur Hill. 1950-The second consecutive state crown was won by the basketball team. 1951 -Central adopted a foreign child and won the championship once more. 1954- Central adopted another foreign child.
