Varsity Basketball ' 2 E State class A champions, seated left to right, are: Garth Stickney, Alan Suter, Tom Brennan, Bob Topp, Dick Noble, George Heinrich, Darrell lhrig. Standing, in the same order: Manager Bob Henry, Coach Bob Quiring, Keith Jones, Ron Dillingham, manager Dave Fitzpatrick. As the 1948-1949 cage season opened, Bob Quiring, in his first year as varsity coach, had little to shout about. Back from last year's team were four men, only two of whom had seen much action, and one of these, center Jim Wenke, was to graduate at the mid-semester. Faced with this situation, Quiring decided to build for next year, using iuniors as the basis of his squad. The team started slowly, playing brilliantly at times and approaching mediocrity at others. The Ron Jackson, John Gideon, Sam Grow, Terry Nulf, and lineup remained unsettled until the middle of January, when a definite first team was decided upon. Kalamazoo did not fare well in conference play, occupying fourth place position at the end of the regular season. However, the team, although ragged, had potentialities, it could shoot well and had a fighting spirit. Entering the Kalamazoo regional as definite underdogs, the Maroons proved their mettle. Benton Harbor, who had beaten Kalamazoo twice during the season, was established as a defi- nite favorite for the regional crown, and possible contender for state honors. Kalamazoo played a 'fair brand of ball against first round opponent Grand Rapids Central, winning by a score of 46-26. Fac- ing a Muskegon five the next night, with which Kalamazoo had split during the regular season, Central iust squeezed by 32 to 31 in a lack-luster, unexciting contest. But Central showed what it could do under pressure and surpris- ingly knocked off the favor- ed Tigers 29-23. The game was exciting all the way, Central playing heads up ball and richly deserving its well-earned victory. ln quarter final play at Lansing Sexton gym, Kala- mazoo drew Grand Rapids city champion, Ottawa Hills. Continuing to play top- Central overcame a mild Indian lead and gained a coveted semi- final berth, this allowed them to play in the spacious Jenison Field House in East Lansing. Ferndale, against whom Central was paired in the semi-finals, fell 45-25, as Kalamazoo drove ahead to the state class A finals. Unbeaten Sagi- naw Arthur Hill, who had steamrol- lered the sta te 's best for twenty consecutive victories, was Centralis op- ponent in the final game. Although little chance was given Kalamazoo against the powerful Hillites, excite- ment had mounted to a fever pitch. But as the game started, Central as- toundingly jumped into a 15 point lead and by half time led 34 to 16. Kala- mazoo, with near 50 per cent shooting accuracy, had handled the ball master- fully and showed inconquerable spirit, they played Arthur Hill even-up the rest of the game and emerged State Champions. George Heinrich sparked the Maroons in this contest, playing a stellar fioor game, and hitting for 20 points. Dick Noble, Bob Topp, Garth Stickney, and Al Suter also played well, bringing home the cherished trophy. lt was Quiring's patient and able coaching plus the team's great spirit and confidence which enabled Central to come through so well. Kalamazoo will be a long time forgetting its 1949 high school basketball team and its coach of the year, Bob Quiring. Kalamazoo's powerful football team start- ed the sports' year off with a bang, having a very successful season playing in the tough Southwestern Michigan Conference. Central finished in a tie for second place with Muske- gon, but with three extra points in the right places, Zuidema's boys could have stolen con- ference and state championship honors. Open- ing the season with five straight victories, including ones over highly touted Grand Haven and runner-up Chicago champion, Fenger high school, the Maroon bumped hard into Muske- gon Heights. Down l3-O at the half, in this sixth contest of the year, Central fought back hard for two touchdowns, but failed to convert both times, losing a heartbreaker, 13-12. Top men were state champ Terry Nulf and sophomore George Dunigan in the dashes, Forrest MacKellar and Bob Irwin in the 440, Al Austin in the half, and Jim Bishop and Howard Linders in the mile. Best in the hurdles were Dale Boersma and Kip Walker, while John Hiatt and Bill Loucher Intramural carried Central's hopes in the shot put and broad iump respectively. ln early season com- petition these men had managed to win three meets, including the second annual South- western Michigan-Grand Rapids conference meet of twelve schools, while losing only two. Kalamazoo was victorious in the regional, which also served as the conference meet, thereby becoming another conference cham- pionship team. Central axlsop showed well in the state meet. 7 Q 1 Q' 'E gl . Wx f 3 Under the leadership of Max Johnson, Central's fine intramural program was an outstanding success this year.
