The team started out the season in tine style with a Win over Grand Rapids Davis Tech on September 26 by a score of 20 to 6. Elliot. l 751247 Ewan With one Veteran returning tor the l935-37 edition ot the Maroon Giants, Coach Eugene Thomas fashioned a highly ettective basketball guintet which won approximately three guarters ol its games. There Was a famine of tall centers during the current season. Both Ernest Ponicki and Peter Goldschmeding were fine ball players but neither had the height to compete against such mammoth 53 pivotmen as VanDort of Holland, and Van- derLinde of Muskegon. The spark in the Maroons offense was provided by lohn Maartens, who was high scorer of the squad. Coach Thomas tried out his Maroons for the first time during the year against lack- son at the Prison City. Lansing Eastern handed them a setback here 16 to 13. Then came three fine triumphs over Holland, Battle Creek and Muskegon Heights. On the following Friday, Coach Leo Tiny Redmond brought to the Celery City a fine team. They overwhelmed the locals to the extent of a 29 to 10 score. Grand Haven high was forced to bow to the locals on the following Friday, 22 to 18. Coach Bill Perigo's Benton Harbor Marines handed the Centralites a defeat 23-20. The Coach A. E. Stoddard's 1937 track aggrega- tion proved to be one of the strongest ever to carry the colors of the Maroon and White. The individual star of the squad was Robert McKinney who amassed a total ot 58 points during the regular schedule and who also broke the record for the 220 yard dash in the regional meet at Western State establishing a new mark of 22.3. next Friday saw another victory over the Crickets from Battle Creek. The Dutchmen visited Kalamazoo next and left after dropping a close one, 22 to 20. Muskegon Heights had improved very lit- tle and lost another game to the Maroons, here, by the score of 26-16. The Big Reds were red hot when the Maroons went to Muskegon and swished baskets from every angle to down the Celery City boys 37 to 25. The locals then polished off the regular sea- son by winning their last two tilts. With two victories over Holland indicating the relative strength of the two teams everyone expected Central to beat the Dutchmen in the re- gionals. But Holland proved much stronger than in earlier season and not only beat the Thomasmen 29-18 but went on to oppose Muskegon high for the state Class A title. Front row: R. Bullard, Manager I.
