SllEllll STUDIES llEPllHTNlENT The purpose in studying history and the other social studies is to gain an under- standing of the present day world. This knowledge of contemporary affairs can only be obtained by a study of past events, persons, and ideas. The four history cours- es offered at Central High School are World History, American History, Amer- ican Government and Economics. Throughout the social studies program an effort is made to encourage independ- ent thinking on the part of the student. The goal is for each student to reason logically and to think for himself. MATHEMATICS ETEPAHTMENT The Mathematics Department aims to create a continuous program of develop- ment in the understanding of mathemat- ical processes to be met with in real life situations. The program is in two parallel courses: an academic course for those who may desire to extend their studies through college and a general course suitable for business or practical application to every- day occupations. The general purpose is to give to pupils an understanding of gen- eral mathematical processes and to devel- op the powers of reasoning. LONA C.
