The Bengal cinder men, sparked by the untiring efforts of Coach Hal France, showed the true Central spirit and determination to win. Vacancies left by last year's stars Ed McCool, Claude Bruton, Hunk Walker, and Linley Ward were filled magnificently by new recruits. The SZ Central Track Team was composed of Jimmy Bruton, a great distance runner, Billy Foots Yelverton, spectacular in the relays, shot put, and discus, and Hank Terry, proving his value to the team in the distance runs. There was also Carl Jones, the pole vaulting spec- ialist,-Marcus Shivers, Jack Barksdale, and Harry Cieotes, all returning lettermen, who bolstered the squad superbly. Approximately l2OO active members of the 43 clubs at Central scurry about over the building to their respective meeting places. In the club of their choice with a faculty sponsor in charge, students find a time for contact with fellow classmates in an informal atmosphere, where working toward an aim becomes pleasurable. Sophomore! Junior! Senior! They mingle in unique fellowship, for the clubs, as a rule, have no class restrictions. Each year the administration attempts to encourage every student in school to participate in at least one club at Central. In order to cover the range of interest possible in a student body as large as ours, new clubs are afforded each year. Some of the new ones added just this year have been the Photogra- phy Club, Senior Bird Girls, the Motor Club, and Radio Speaking. Activity range includes singing, dancing, playing bingo in Spanish, try- ing out fly-rods, planning point systems and banquets, and even laying the groundwork for a publication as was the case of C-irl's Hi-Y this year in pub- lishing their Blue and Gold. Whatever the club, whatever the aim, whatever the membership, it's a time to mix fun with workg and Wednesday is a popular day at Central. - Carroll Duncan RADIO SPEAKING Sponsor - - Mr. Albert President - - Richard Haynes Vice-President - - Ralph Farr Secretary - - Ann Nations TEEN TlMERS Sponsor - - Miss Smith President - - Beverly Koch Vice-President - Emily Bush Secretary - - Ann Jones Treasurer - - Janis Edgar Reporter - - Nancy Woodruff SENIOR HI-Y GIRLS Sponsor - President - Vice-President Secretary - Treasurer - Mrs. Jordan - Mary Harrell Carolyn Whatley Doris Wilkinson - Joyce Simpson FOURTH DEGREE Sponsor - - Mrs. Jordan President - - - Joyce Simpson MOTOR CLUB Sponsor - - Mr. Guiese President - - Gerald Russell FIFTH DECREE Sponsor - President - Vice-President Secretary - Treasurer - - Mrs. Jordan Needra Heckman - - Nancy Noble - Joyce Simpson - Gwen Warren C-AITY AND CAVEL Sponsor - President - Vice-President Secretary - Parliamentarian Sergeant-at-arms - - Mrs. Russell Tommy Morgan Jeanice Cooper - Betty Webb Warren Willard - Jack Chance F.
