We want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Miss Pearl Spann, who for many years has devoted her attention to the development of clean thoughts and ideals in the minds of the students. To one who knows that character means more than knowledge, the 1942 Cotton Boll is respectfully dedicated. 3 COTTON BOLL THEME Although the world is at conflict at present and the future is somewhat uncertain, we shall always be able to look back upon the glory and splendor which were ours at Central High School. In so many ways it is similar to life enjoyed in the historic South before the out- break of the Civil War. And now, as we are about to take our place in the world, we are reluctant to leave but will always fondly remember the happy and care- free days. As stories of the old South relate the grandeur of the time, so this book shall bring memories of the years spent at Central. The Old South, Martha Ann Brett's sensational novel concerning the future lives of the 1942 graduates, has been dramatized by Hugh Patrick, playwright, and is being staged at the Ike Franklin Theater by Sidney Jones, producer. Cast in the feminine lead is renowned Sally Ann O'Brien with Van Rusling as the male co-star. Brilliant acting is portrayed by the supporting cast: Melissa Turner, Virginia Carmichael, Robert Cooper, Betty Hewes, Rowan Taylor, Nina Owen, and Tom Hairston. Musical scores by the noted composer, Billy Moore, are being presented in the Deep South style of Jimmy Bryan's orchestra. Jimmy Benton, Fred and Nat Hovious, Carl Lundquist, Edward Yerger, and Henry Yoder have made quite a name for themselves for their inimitable playing. Jill Bailiff, violinist, and Lane Van Hook, concert pianist, who have gained world-wide ,recognition for their individual playing, have the spotlight in this orchestra. During the entire play choral music is provided by the all girl singers: Jane Giddens, Hattie and Frances Warren, Lucy Owen, Laurie Gene Coon, Lennie Crawford, and Rose Walley, with golden-voiced Mary Henry as soloist. Stage decoration was supervised by Bobby Overstreet, Bobby DeKay, and Helen Lawshe, while Connie Mary Lloyd, Frances Alexander, Mary Brooks, Dorothy Rawls, and Count Earl Johnson, who gained his fame in Paris, France, designed all costumes. Christine Comfort, assisted by Mary Ruth Conrad and Jane Levring, di- rected all dialogueg and Phillip Parker served as head director of the play. In the admiring audience may be seen Notre Dame's remarkable football coach, Billy Murray, and his all-American halfbaek, P. C. Foose. Circus man- ager, Bill Thompson, advertising agent, Clint Cavett, attorney, Harold Bonner, and jeweler, John Albriton, occupy box seats. The army is well represented by General Howard Brown, Majors Lloyd Bridgers and Joe Iupe, and Lieutenants Edwin Roshore, James Lindsay, and Leland Hume. Screen actress Frances Gholson's beauty is visible throughout the vast crowd which includes her escort, Prince Jack Sampson. Barbara Burge, America's best dressed flapper, primps while Thomasina Blissard and Jean Boggan look on. Rebal J ulienne, Betty Nichols, June Dobbs, Dorothy Stewart, and Margaret Stewart, the cream of society, parade their lovely gowns designed by Theo Stovall. Baron Art Williams escorts his charming wife, the former Mary Sanders, and the world's heavyweight boxing champion, Charles Horton, accompanies glamour girl, Joan Frantz. Professor Louis Lyell and Doctors Joe Harrison and Donald Lutken indulge in an intellectual conversation with popular matrons, Esther Tomlinson and Nancy Keister. During intermission, the sports commentator, Lane Fortinberry, chats with the ladies' tennis champion, Anne Davis, who defeated Martha Brown for the title. Rosa Lee Britt, instructor of gymnastics at Vassar College, talks with Maxyne Madden, lecturer on Civil War history, Selby Watkins, society editor, and Jane Whittington, China relief worker. Probably the most distinguished attendant is Governor Guy Gillespie, who speaks of the latest political develop- ments to Senator Wilfred Cole. Unable to be present because of business, Dan Patrick, engineer, read the reviews in the morning paper. Veteran critics, the Gibson brothers, Clifton Shrader, and John Kochtitzky highly praised the performance, and newspaper reviewers, Anne Buchanan, Betty McBride, and Nelle Craig have been very complimentary. 43 MR. ROBERTS For thirty-one years Principal J. L. Roberts has served the faculty and students of Central High School. In 1911, when he first came to Central as head of the Latin department, there were only eleven grades and few extra activities. Since then many additions have been made. Mr. Roberts labored untiringly with the students and devoted his spare time to the development and expansion of various branches of the school's curriculum. He helped make Central one of the largest high schools in the South and has seen its advancement in fields of science, art, music, physical education, and commercial studies. During his busiest hours, he has always laid aside his work to discuss and help solve the problems of those who have sought his advice. It is through his efforts and willing cooperation that the student body has been able to undertake many publications, athletic ventures, and other projects that would otherwise have been impos- sible. With his assistance and guidance, the school has received high honors and added laurels for outstanding achievements. It is with sincere regret, yet profound respect, that those con- nected with Central in any way, note Mr. Robert's departure from the annals of the school. 4 4 1 ,Qs Tl-IE SECCDINID ESTAT T1Junior E S I g, z WWW f-XFX Nff fx,-JN 'N ,Qf-X f'S f-N ,,.x-X BT'ml 5-F F. f-X 'X ' .-'Cx f-X f-x 45 ALICIA FORTIN BERRY Although she had been here for only a short while, Alicia had gained the love and friendship of many. During the early part of the year, Junior officers were elected, and under their leadership many things were accomplished. A new ring for next year was selected by an appointed committee. The Pegasus, a literary magazine which was the main project of the class, was edited and published by a staff composed chiefly of Juniors. RICE and SERGEANT RAY SMITH 90 In appreciation of his untiring efforts and for the service which he rendered to the Junior ROTC unit of Central High School, this page is gratefully dedi- cated to Captain Perry M. Dixon. V l HISTORY OF ROTC UNIT A Junior ROTC unit was established at Central High School in September, l935, by Captain Daniel F. Healy as PMS Sz T and Sergeant Perry M. Dixon as assistant. Captain Healy was later replaced by Lieutenant Colonel Henry C. Harrison, Jr. Colonel Harrison started the Drum and Bugle Corps, which has gradually increased each year since its organization. This year Captain Martin R. Rice and Sergeant Ray Smith replaced Colonel Harrison and Sergeant Dixon. The enrollment of the unit for the first year was small, but it was increased to 293 cadets for this year. For the past five years the unit has won the Honor rating in the annual ROTC Inspection. The Military Club of last year was superseded by an honorary military society called the Disc and Diamond Society. The purposes of the society are for the advancement of the qualities of Honor, Loyalty, Valor, Leadership and Fellowship. This makes the seventh year of the ROTC unit at Central High School. The purpose of the unit is to qualify students for military leadership. It teaches citizenship and inculcates habits of precision, discipline, self-control, patriotism, and respect for constituted authority. In times like these each cadet can truth- fully say he is proud of his unit. 91 BATTALION OFFICERS CADET MAJOR BN. SPONSOR CADET CAPTAIN CADET lst LT. At various times they have marched in down-town parades and played for patriotic and civic causes. On May 2, the band took part in the annual Mississippi Band Contest and was highly awarded for an outstanding performance.
