'fTo no other place than Patricia Eager Graham ls, fellow-journalistfl I answered. Shes giving a celebrity party-you know. XVish me luck and a good write-up. , f'Here's to you, then,7' said Jim cheerfully, as I closed the door of the main office of the Daily Mirror. It was such a lovely evening-for Jackson in December-that I decided to walk, but a limousine drew up to the curb 2il1Cl someone sweetly asked me to ride. It was Frances Cottrell, just back from Paris, where she had spent a month and part of her several million dollars. I complimented her on her beautiful car, and she told me that it had been designed by Jack Mann and that Charlotte Truitt had planned the color scheme and general decora- tion ofthe interior. Frances' new home was being built at the time, and she told me the architect was Elaine Garrett Qpardon me-Elaine Owenj. Frances dropped me at the NValdorf-Ritz, and inside the lobby I met famous Surgeon Thomas Neely and Dr. Richard Dorman talking with Beth Irby. Also I met Captain Howard Cotten of the United States Navy, Harry Holton of the United States Senate, and Lab Technician Martha Kendrick. On the elevator were Charles Kilgore, famous crooner, Dr. Carolyn Buck, Governor William Shipman, and commercial artist, Lucille Skelton-also on their way to Pat Eager Graham ls penthouse. Having arrived at the beautiful home of the hostess, I found her with Elta Robinson and Pete Pierce, all three looking exactly what they were-million dollar wives of millionaire husbands. There were dozens of people at the party. I don't think I ever could name them all-but in the number were Alwilda Montgomery, famous accordionist, and Jacquelyn Conner, who sang in Grand Opera. Clifford Godwin, famous symphony orchestra conductor, was there with his wife Evelyn Jones, and John Roberts, Prince of Jazz, and Wife Marianna Terry were among the first arrivals. Near the punch bowl l found Scientist D. C. Simmons and Chemist John Burwell arguing over what the punch had in it. Dancing with Frank Furlow, the heart-breaker of the screen, was Fenncile Richardson, H0llyWood's most famous night- club dancer. Drifting about the floor in the arms of Novelist Joe Mc- Carty was Mary Sylvia lleron, Broadwayls lovely dancer. Charlotte Dutton, dancer and Mary Sylvia's beautiful rival, was sitting one out with that second Fred Astaire, John Allen Ellard. Near the radio were Page Sixty-Two 'title' 1 'f'l'l l'H5f Blillfl.. FIIIITIISY . . . those two lovely actresses, Roberta Lee and Anne Dudley Owens, listening to the sweet crooning of George Kinard. Alfred Millstein and Peter Lutken were relating their experiences in leopard hunting to those wide-eyed screen sweethearts, Mary Carraway and -lean Barksdale. Katherine Riddell, a second Cornell, discovered and managed by New York's most successful director, Ess VVhite, sat discussing politics with orchestra leader, Mickey VVhite. 'llhey were interrupted from time to time by the executive and politician, Benton Wakefield. llilton Carlisle and Sam Birdsong, well-known criminal lawyers, ate caviar and argued over a recent kidnapping case. Alf Saums and Judson Shields, novelists, were complimenting Pat OiBrien and Shirley Chichester on their latest travel book, while June Bryant, poet, listened in. Blanche Reid, sophis- ticated playwright, ate salted nuts and talked to Martha Emmons, co- author, about the denouement of her latest mystry. Gladys Robertson, radio singer, talked to Virginia Carlisle and her husband, who was am- bassador to China. Sidney Reed, famous psychologist, was on the terrace giving a very interesting lecture to an audience consisting of Marty Love, actressg Walter Scott and Sallie Lea VVhitney, comedy teamg Anne Nichols and lVill Rogers, publishers, Charlotte Nichols, bed-time story teller on the radio, Evelyn Pevey, second Eleanor Powell, and Paul Lackey, model for Esquire ads. Irma Chambers, short-story writer, talked to play-boy Andrew Orkin, and Sallie VVilliams, radio star, was waiting in the sun parlor for some one. I saw Jimmy Uavett, lawyer, headed that way. C. A. Moak, nightclub manager, talked to jazz-band leader Tommy Vililliams about polo, and the big movie director, Mebane Goodloe, was advising actress Dorothy Wiinan to renew her contract with Paramount. Finally, about tenethirty, after l had seen everybody and interviewed a few, I left, even though the party had prolonged itself into a dance, which was now at its height. In the lobby I met Mary Crawford Dennis with her famous surgeon husband. I saw Corde Joe Bierdeman and Evelyn Richards, secretaries, Marguerite llamilton, retired capitalist, and Bernice Suttle, wife of a famous concert pianist. I went straight back to the newspaper office, where I found Elaine Barrow using my typewriter to take notes given her by Leon Howell, the paper's circulation manager. I shooed them away and sat down to straighten my cluttered desk. Leon returned presently to tell me that I had better hurry if l was going to attend the New lYHd1'vS party for the paper staff tonight. Why, I had forgotten! A second after twelve, Little New Year 1948 would be ushered into Jackson. Another year had passed, and l wasn't any closer to being a celebrity. Oh, well, maybe this year I would be the most famous guest 'invited to one of those celebrity parties-instead of just going for the purpose of writing about it. MW ,em new Page Sixty-Three t 1 LEHVES FBUII1 il SEIIIUWS DIHHY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1934 Dragged out of bed at the unearthly hour of seven-thirty to start back to school! To- day I saw everybody I hadn't seen for ages. It was fun being together again after our sum- mer Vacation. There's such a cute boy next to me in history. I think I'll wear my new pink dress to school tomorrow. Maybe that will make an impression! FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 1935 We Sophies made a day of it at school today. Our class had a program in chapel to show everybody weire 'goin' to town as Seniors, with all the talent We've got. We felt so important with our colors all over the auditorium and cafeteria and with huge streamers of the same rose and white tied to our arms. Everybody paid us special at- tention and congratulated us on the success of our day. THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 1936 At last Jack asked me for a date. I broke the one with David 'cause he wanted to go to the show, and Jack wanted to take me to the Junior Class vaudeville. Of course I had to support my class, didnit I? Everybody Was at the vaudeville, and it was awfully cute! I'll bet we Juniors made a lot of money for our Senior project next year. A good idea- that looking ahead! I'm looking ahead to another date with Jack! He's fun, I'll tell the World! MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1936 For the last time I felt the thrill of excite- ment of a first day of school at Central High! This promises to be a grand year, but it seems so strange not to see the older boys and girls around for us to look up to and admire. It makes me feel funny to think that people are looking up to us now. Here I am beginning to be sad already at the thought of graduat- ing! But there's a whole year yet, and I hope we make it a good one! ,aa Nr? e SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1937 I'm nearly dead! I tell you, Diary, these parties are getting me down! From luncheon to bridge party Cwith only nine in Ann's car!! and thence to the Garden Party to receive ex' citedly the book which we members of the Hy-Y wrote. And we learned that one of our big responsibilities, the Cotton Boll, is nearly ready to go to press. Of course, it's going to be the biggest and best yet!! We're working hard to raise the rest of our money for our project by giving plays and, best of all, the Pearl River Show Boat. It is really going to be a knockout !! Soon we'll have Class Day, and then too soon comes our graduation. The end-or rather the beginning! The World is going to hear from us, you wait and see! With the wonderful start we've made and our boundless ambition, some of us are surely going to be- come famous. But Whatever happens to us, we'll always remember our happy associations at dear old Central High! swaye- JUIHUIES N- flu, ,f ff 1' NJN ly, v, f 'ffff1f1f,',, HH fwwfnjlf ' , . xffu' mf f,.f,gfij,.,flIrp1f f W I jqwfwfffgh' , ,Mfr f: fx yqwn mmf MH fm'-11 NVIJ ,C :-- 7,3 44,14 HERBERT BIGGS We admire him not only for what he is. but for what we know he will be. The band was also guest at the Mississippi State-Sewanee game, 'Besides furnishing music every evening at the Mississippi State Fair the band paraded at the opening of this event. On November 15, the band played a concert on tl1e Governor's Mansion lawn, after which all the boys were invited in for refreshments. The band played in the Senior and Junior High Chapel at the first of the year and on the return from Christmas holidays. KINARU Clmimzlcus FURLOVV J J J i HATTIESBURG V- JACKSON After three weeks of grinding practice in preparation for the eagerly awaited 1937 grid season the Jackson High Tigers made a very impressive initial showing by defeating the highly rated Bengals of Hattiesburg by a 6 to 0 score. One of the largest crowds ever to witness a state high school football game was on hand to see the local eleven upset the dope bucket and blot out completely from the memory of local fans a former defeat suffered at the hands of the downstaters. The entire Jackson team played brilliant football and the outlook for the season was encouragingly rosy. LAUREL -- JACKSON Repeating the score of the first game the Central High Tigers added the Laurel High Tornadoes to their list of victims. Airtight defensive work kept the Laurel eleven from the Jacksonians' goal. Behind perfect inter- ference Jackson backs scampered within scoring distance of the Jones Countians' goal many times and went over on one of these vicious offensive drives to give the locals their margin of victory. CANTON -- JACKSON Avenging last year's humiliating defeat, the Jack- sonians completely crushed the Canton High Panthers under the Weight of a 46 to 6 score. Sumrall's spectacu- lar 80 yard run, Wimberly's ground gaining reverses, and Passon's blocking were great aids to the Bengal cause. 'IUUBHDUUJIli3 CLEVELAND -- JACKSON Displaying a smoothly working attack the Tigers ehalked up their fourth victory of the season by shutting out the game, hut inferior. Cleveland Wildeats. The smashing charges of C. A. Moak and Henry Kinard com- pletely smothered the attack of the Deltans and paved the way for many of the locals' drives. lXlcCOMB -- JACKSON Contrary to the gloomy predictions of many, the Bengals once again outplayed their opponents to defeat the McComb Tigers 13 to 0. The downstaters brought a powerful eleven with them but one which was no match for the inspired local squad. Frank Chambers and 'fBuddy Davis played exceptionally well in the backfield while George Kinard was outstanding in the line. BROOKHAVEN -A JACKSON Literally swamping their adversaries with touch- downs, the wearers of the Orange and Black trouneed the Brookhaven Panthers to a 33 to 0 tune. As usual Captain Clovis Passons played splendid football. The Tiger suhstitutes got an opportunity to taste of battle when Coaches Broyles and Crawley relieved the entire first team early in the game. 'IIBEB GULFPORT -- JACKSON Hailed one of the state's strongest elevens already the Bengals added to their athletic prestige when they ran roughshod over the Gulfport Commodores in a sur- prisingly one-sided affair. The final count read 32 to 0 in favor of the Jacksonians. Chambers eclipsed the feats of Reeves, Gulfport star secondary man, when he reeled off yard after yard for the Tigers. The per- formances of Furlow and Moak were worthy of com- mendation. KOSCTUSKO -- JACKSON Witli an enviable record of seven wins and no de- feats out of seven Contests the Tigers met the Kosciusko Whippets under the lights of Millsaps stadium and trounced the visitors 41 to 0. Apparently in a daze from the start, the Kosciusko delegation could not stop the merciless attack of the local lads and the stellar defense work of Biggs, the scampering feet of t'Wimp5 ' Wimberly, and the surprising antics of Gresham, de- pendable substitute, added to the Whippet's consterna- tion. MERTDIAN -- JACKSON The changing winds of fate blew an ill breeze in Meridian on Thanksgiving Day when the Jackson Tigers, slated to continue their unbroken winning streak, dropped the game of games to the Meridian Wildcats, traditional rivals of Central High, by a 19 to 13 score. A thriller from start to finish, the game seesawed back and forth at a dazzling speed. Although the Meridian- ites had a powerful squad the defeat of the Tigers can be partly accredited to the fact that overeonfidence intermingled with injuries which hurt the eleven slowed the Tigers down considerably. Breathtaking action kept the thousands of spectators on their feet throughout the game and the score changed three times within the last seven minutes of play to add to the thrill of the scene. Good sportsmanship prevailed during the day, Meridian was an ideal host, and the Tigers took their defeat like true sports-, with a smile. 'IUUBHDUUJIIS VICKSBVRG .- JACKSON Burning with the desire to atone for the upset at Meridian, the Jackson High Tigers met and vanquished the Vicksburg' Greenies, one of the Conferences strongest elevens. by an 8 to 7 count. Had the locals lost this game they would have shared Championship honors with Vicksburg and Meridian in a triple tie for first place, but there was no denying the determined Jack- sonians and the final gun found them undisputed Big 8 monarchs. Every man on the Jackson squad, spurred on by the desire to capture the Conference cup, played brilliant football. Captain L'Tobyl' Passons was spec- tacular, running, blocking, and quarterbacking with equal skill. His rare generalship led his team to victory and was a fitting ending: to a glorious career. This final victory was an example of the whole-hearted co- operation, the masterful coaching, and tl1e clean, driv- ing football that was the Tigers' throughout the year.
