They had to tell me about it, because in her final death agony I deserted her. When I could do no more, I ran away. She would not have left me so: she was too good a soldier for that. All her life she had been fighting battles-against odds-and the final struggle against death was her first defeat. The longest battle of her career was in her school work, to overcome the handicap of a poor start in the elementary grades. For seven years. she spent every afternt on and three hours at night preparing her lessons. And. until last year she rarely made more than a passing grade. But she never gave up and she never failed. Last year things began to get easier for her, and her crowning triumph was a perfect grade in her final examination i11 mathematics. This year her progress was much smoother and more pleasant in all her subjects. She had the same fidelity to her tasks. but could afford to take time out to cultivate some friendships. She became a member of a little club of high school girls, who once or twice a week enjoyed together a wienie roast, or a candy pull. There were no boys at these gatherings, but what jolly times the little friends had. Bessie Linn's time for a beau or sweetheart had not yet come, yet if you asked her what she wanted to be in life. she would tell you with beautiful simplicity that she'd like to be a wife and a mother. But till her death her dad was her only sweetheart: upon him she lavished all her thought and her affection. The seventy-five cents, which she had saved out of her -lunch money, all went into Christmas presents for the others of the family. but of the amount she spent thirty-five cents for the pair of socks which she proudly hung on the Christmas tree addressed to Dear Old Dad. But sacrifice for others was fundamental in her character. It came so easy to her that she was never conscious of the beauty of her unselfishness. Her clothes, her amusements, her little treasures had always been simple almost to the point of penury, but from her there was no bitterness. no complaint. and no self-pity. She took what we could honestly afford and asked no more. For Christmas she had asked one gift only-a Senior ring of Jackson High School. 'That gift was not denied her, but it was deferred. lileanwhile she could be unaffectedly happy and satisfied. Even in her last illness she did not wish to be taken to the hospital for fear we could not afford it. Unaffected simplicity and honesty in word and act became her like a garment. A lie was impossible to her natureg it did not occur to her to practice deception or guile. Hel' nature was forthright and genuine, And today we bury all that is mortal of her. She goes in her simple little party dress-the only one she ever had. Those who would judge that her life has been meagre, should consider the inestimable riches of the character she had built for herself. She had that in her which deserves to live endlessly. Much of God I saw in her, and I must believe that her soul abides forever with Him in those reaches beyond our farthest star. M. C. WHITE. J 1 5 -J 5 Lu Qfass Qigstory At last we have come to our goal, and now we are ready to look back on the days that are gone by. Our history lives now in our own minds, but time dims all memories. and in later years it will be pleasant to recall memories of the long ago- when we were young. It was only a few years ago that a large group of Cubs started out to travel through the dense jun-gle of School. They had received advice from their friends and families had been directed what road to take, but their parents could not go with them, For a number of years they had been training for this trip, but heretofore they had taken the matter not seriously, but lightly, as young cubs do. Since the jungle was so deep and strange the Cubs were a little afraid and pro- ceeded very cautiously. Time was pressing, however, the1'e being 11 long journey of f0UI' Ywrs ahead of them, so they quickened their pace. When they entered the globin of the deep forest they were met by a few elders, guides, whose valuable instruction and guidance was very much needed. Soon the Cubs learned how to proceed, the wisest ones following the advice of those older guides, who counselled them to use common sense and to go by the upper paths of hard study, honesty. and homewark. The few who disregarded the advice of the guides by using no common sense and gaing by the lower paths of neglect of study. Cheating. and no preparation, soon found that although they started out in the same direction as the others. the paths they had chosen led into sloughs of failure, swamps of laziness, and the den of the Exam tribe. Soon both groups were told that they must meet this wild tribe of Mid-Term Exams, and that preparation was necessary. Accordingly, each one paused to train himself as seemed best. Feeling superior to the others, or just feeling lazy, a few were so unwise as to neglect this proper training and as a result they were overcome by the difficulties encountered. Among this group were those who had taken the lower and seemingly easier road, where enemies were fewer. They had by taking side paths, avoided encounters with Assignments, Tests, and others, which their wiser friends had already conquered. After the encounter with the savage Exams the Cubs went on as before, some with pleasure now, others with dread, Towards the end of the year another tribe of Exams, called Final Exams confronted our little ones. This time only the weaker ones faced them for the guides had pointed out to those who had traveled and fought Well. a new way out-pass the Exams by means of the bYDP1Il1 of Exemptions. Many were they who went that smooth way with joy. Ot those who did face the Exams, some survived, while others were overcome and driven back. We see little of those now, for our eyes follow the ones that stepped forward. So ended the first year, The growing Cubs now found themselves in a beautiful garden, called Summer Holidays, where no savage enemies came, and where they spent their time in ease and pleasure. Rest was surely pleasant after such hard toil: there they rested in prepara- tion for the next year, which would be harder than the first. A few of the weak ones realizing their weakness. but wishing to start out again with the others, did not live at ease in that beautiful garden of Summer Holidays, but fought and struggled off to one side, in the valley called Summer School Pass, with some of the enemies already conquered by the others. As a result, when the second year began they were tired and irritable, and soon slipped into their old easy ways. The second year passed much as had the first, though the way was now steeper and harder than before. A group of new guides led them, for the others were left behind to bring on new ones PAGE FIFTY-ONE fe if?-'fi ff is is' LIS' just starting their journey. In spite of the difficulty of the way and the strangenes' of the guides, it seemed more pleasant to travel on. The growing Cubs found time for play as well as work, so they formed themselves into groups and made a game out of some of the tasks facing them. Their most savage enemies, Exams, came this year close on the heels of the strong tribes of History, Geometry, English, and others, in different parts of the paths. Again the conquered ones tried to catch up by going through the difficult Summer School Pass, while the others rested in ease and pleasure. So ended the second year. As the Cubs met again the next year, they saw in each other that they had grown much. Time and experience had brought looks of courage and fortitude to their faces, a sense of strength and well-being to their bodies. a feeling of perseverance and ability to their minds. They were. indeed, no longer the little Cubs that had started out, though still cubs in years. However, they still had to look to their new guides for help and guidance, for there were many more dangers to meet, such as: Algebra, a great mountain covered with savage enemies, which must be met and conquered: more of the English tribe that they had met beforeg and other paths and enemies, ways by which some chose to go that they might be better fitted for future enemies to be met after scaling the peak of Graduation. Some of these were: Latin, a deep and wide river, filled with whirlpools and hidden rocks, which must be crossedg French, a valley of stones, which must be traversed: Physics, a path through a grove of trees, with deep hidden pools, lurking enemies, and danger wus pitfalls, which must be traveled: and others, too many to tell about. During this hard year a great many fell into the canyon of Flunk, and climbed out again only with great difficulty. Some were forced to tur11 back and start over on different paths, but others kept their faces turned ahead, and their eyes open to all the dangers, and beauties, too, of the path. Again they met Exams: again those same Exams were conquered by 'some, as before: again the Cubs stepped into the beautiful garden of Summer Holidays, some off to the side, as before. By the fourth year of foraging in the jungle of School, the Cubs had grown into strong, confident, capable Tigers, full-grown, looking on the world with an air of ability and competence. Now the tribe of Mid-Term Exams held little dread for them, but many were the lofty hills and deep valleys to be crossed before the Tigers saw looming up before them the loftiest peak of all, Graduation. Those who had lagged behind hastened their steps when they saw it. and overtook the others. So intent were they on their goal that some forgot the savage Final Exams, a tribe of wild beasts which dwelt on the very mountain slopes. As a result, a few were defeated and sent to the foot of the peak to climb again, but most of our young friends climbed to the summit steadily, and there they at last looked out on the world-the jungle behind, new land in front-at the end of the long journey. if-5 . . From the point of view of games won this is true. The hoys lost seven straight games before finally defeating liiloxi. Then they held Meridian to a scoreless tie. Yet in other ways the results were satisfactory. The students supported their team in spite of adversity and the school spirit they displayed was excellent. The '34 Tigers possess this record and a beautiful silver trophy as testimony of an excellent basketball team. XYorking with a squad of comparatively inexperienced men Coach Tommy Naylor developed a fine team. After winning' eleven games they lost one to 1Vhite Oak. Then, as it would be, our rival Meridian won the other two from us. The Big 9 Basketball Tournament was held at Jackson this vear for the first time in history and was a very great success in every way. The Tigers easily defeated three strong teams to gain the championship. Through- out the season our players displayed the highest type of sportsmanship, but Jackson teams always do.
