1936 THE CADET CORPS IN REVIEW Federal recognition of the Houston Reserve Officers’ Training Corps was gained in July, 1935, after years of effort on the part of the corps, its faculty, and notably, the Reserve Officers’ Association of Houston. Major Gene R. Mauger, then a captain in the Cavalry, was detailed as Professor of Military Science and Tactics to the new Houston Provisional Regiment of the Junior R.O.T.C. Although the corps was almost tripled in size, Major Mauger quickly completed its organization. The Sam Houston corps, under Lt. Paul Van Tuyl, became the First Battalion, having companies A, R, and C of the Regiment, as well as the First Rattalion Rand—two hundred and thirty cadets in all, more than all Houston had last year. Of these, only seventy-seven had had previous military training, and only one had been an officer. First Lieutenant Bailey Lewis became first the captain of Company A, then the major of the First Battalion, and finally the first Cadet Colonel of the Houston Provisional Regiment—a signal honor for Sam Houston. During the Majority of Bailey Lewis, the first competitive inspection was held by the R. M. G. T. Company A, under Captain Alan Buster, ranked first in the city, with 95 out of a 100 points. Company B, under Captain Eddie Young, tied for second with Company E of San Jacinto. When Major Lewis became the Colonel, Major DeWolf of San Jacinto was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Alan Buster became the Major of the First Battalion, and Louis Girard the captain of Com¬ pany A. Lieutenant Jack Moncrief became a captain, second in command of the First Battalion. In spite of the difficulties of training brought about by the great number of new cadets and the re¬ organization, the corps made a fine showing in its excursion to Fort Sam Houston, Galveston, in Decem¬ ber. In the first inspection of the new corps for the War Department, the ranking gained was “satis¬ factory,” probably the best to be expected for the first year. The picture above was taken as Company A passed in review before Major General Preston and Cadet Colonel De Wolf at that inspection. No account of the new deal in the R.O.T.C. should neglect the cadet band. At Sam Houston, the band has increased to almost 30 members. Leo Caesar is the first captain of the First Battalion Band. Much credit is due the band and Mr. Spampinato for the progress they have made.
