Coach Edward D. Duggan, who learned his football from Knute Rockne, has always managed to win the respect of his players and to receive their cooperation in every way. He always puts good sportsmanship and the boys’ safety before the winning of games. As a result they get something out of football that will benefit them in life long after the scores are forgotten. Last season, with only four lettermen back, Duggan built a team that was always a threat to its oppo¬ nents. Line Coach Harold Mickelson, former all-conference guard from Rice Institute, has been very successful in his first year at Sam Houston. Anyone who can work his players as hard as Hal did and still remain as popular with them as he has done, must have a real personality, but Mike has it. In one year he has become one of the best liked members of the faculty. Co-captain Hal Weidemeyer had every qualification to be the leader of the team. The fact that he was one of the few men who were placed on every all¬ city team speaks for his ability. But Hal’s strongest point was his undying spirit. He was always the best hustler on the field and never quit fighting, regardless of the score. At the end of the season, he was selected unanimously by his team¬ mates as the most popular player on the squad. Co-captain Kermit Beahan was respected more by opposing players and coaches than any other player on the team. Kermit was in the middle of every play, and few gains were made over his tackle position. Although he was handi¬ capped by injuries during most of the city games, he was considered by many to be the best tackle in the district.

Beverly “Curley” Hart Guard “Curley’s” steady play and fighting spirit made him a val¬ uable man to the team. He gave opposing ball carriers plenty of trouble. Edward “Brains” Carnes Center Ed’s value to the team was not appreciated until he was kept on the bench by injuries. He already has two football letters and has another year of eligibility. Henry “Wasp” Winn Guard When Henry could keep his feet on the ground, he was as good a guard as there was in the city. James “Wimpy” Wells Guard Jimmie completed a quartet of guards that gave the Tigers some of the best guard play in the city. Billy “Imp” Heard Tackle What Billy lacked in years he made up in weight. He is being counted on to come through in a big way next year. George “Bed” Holms Guard “Bed” was in the middle of every play—in the middle of the line, and his playing was as brilliant as the color of his hair. 1836
