BASKETBALL SUMMARY When basketball practice was opened by Coach Duggan, a squad of about thirty hoys reported to him. Included in this group were only two letter-men, the rest being hoys who were ready and willing to learn basketball. After about two weeks of intensive practice the Tigers opened up and successfully felled several out-of- town quints before starting their regular play. Even though the team came through these games easily Duggan drilled the hoys harder than ever in preparation for the first game. The Tigers opened the championship race against Jeff Davis at the San Jacinto gym.” After the Tigers had held them to a one-point lead in the first half, Davis t urned on the steam and increased the margin of their lead until the Tigers were unable to overcome it, and as a result the Tigers lost their first game against city competition. The final score was 30-20. The next game was with the San Jacinto Bears. After the Bears had assumed a first half lead, the Tigers rallied in the last half and beat them to the tune of 23-20 for their first city win. The next game the Tiger quintet dropped to Milby by the score of 29-16. It seemed as though the Tigers could not get to functioning properly. The following game, which was with John Reagan, ended the first half of the season for the Tigers. With a fast passing attack, the Tigers hit the basket time and again, and as a result redeemed themselves for the loss in the preceding game. The final score was 34-19. Starting the second round of play, the Tiger quintet met the San Jacinto Bears. The Tigers were unable to get started while the Bears were hitting the basket regularly. When the final whistle had blown, the Tigers were on the short side of a 31-23 score. Next came Milby. Remembering the defeat that the Buffs had handed to them in the first half of the season, the Tigers really got to working in fine style and trounced them by a 30-15 score. The Tigers showed plenty of class in this game. Sam Houston dropped the next game to Reagan in a rough and tumble affair that was marred by too many personal fouls. The Tigers gave the Bulldogs a real battle. It was not until later in the fourth quarter that Reagan gathered the winning margin of points after the lead had changed hands several times. The Tigers closed their season by losing again to the Jeff Davis Panthers. The Tigers fought to avenge the defeat that the Panthers had previously handed them but to no avail. The final score was 34-26. The Tigers finished fifth in the city race, winning three and losing five games.

Billy Bvrns, Center Billy won his second letter at center this year for the Tigers. Billy is tall and angu¬ lar and was able to take the ball off the backboard many a lime. Ed Willy, Forward Ed won his first letter by his all-around forward play. On the man for man defense, Ed is unexcelled in his ability to guard his man. Charlie Giamalva, Guard Charlie’s steady able play was a feature of the Tiger at¬ tack. His keen eye for the bas¬ ket brought the Tigers many points. This was his second let¬ ter and his last year on the team. George Munger, Forward George’s accuracy in hitting the basket gave the Tigers many a badly needed point. This was his first basketball letter and last year on the team. Chester Chonowski, Guard Chester won his second let- let in basketball this year, being the only reserve on the team to letter. Always a hard fighter, he is noted for his ability to take the ball away from his opponents.
