V lie osnios 1934 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF SAM HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL HOUSTON, TEXAS Copyright 1934 bv Myrtle Lee Robbins . Editor John Prescott . Business Manager Adrian Flake . Art Editor ORDER OF BOOKS I CLASSES II SPORTS III ACTIVITIES IV EAVORITES V SNAPS AND ADS FOREWORD Listen my children and ye shall hear. Of a tale of woe and a dirge thafs drear. How we ' ve tried and slaved and worked (how true!). To bring a Cosmos complete to you. It isn ' t at all as we ' d have it be. But we ' d fain implore your leniency. For we our best but strove to do. So we shan ' t begin an alibi new. There ' s been no Cosmos for many a year. And we have forgotten their plans, we fear. So we must forge new ways again. And set an example for those who deign To publish annuals as years go by. In the name of glorious Sam Houston High. W e ' d have it bigger and better now. But this is the best that we know how. So please be kind and forgive mistakes. Live and let live for old times ' sake. And we hope that this holds some memory dear. That you each can treasure year by year. —By Mary Edna Poole TO MRS. PEARL MARVEL MARTIN who has, by her faithful service to the school as a whole, and by her sincere interest in the students individually, won a permanent place in the hearts and minds of evervone with whom she has come in contact, we dedicate the 1934 Cosmos. Duggan, former Notre Dame star, has as likal)le a personality as any man that ever coached football. Duggan not only teaches his boys good foot¬ ball, hut he teaches them to be good sportsmen as well. It may he said that he is respected and loved by every Sam Houston athlete that he has ever coached. Al¬ though having but one letterman hack in 1933, Coach Duggan developed a splendid team out of very green material. Assistant Coach Hudgings, former athlete from Baylor University, is an able assistant to Coach Duggan. Although Hudgings is not paid a salary for coaching, he coaches because he loves sports. ”Saco” Hudgings is also noted for teaching the football players to he good, clean sportsmen, as well as hard fighting football players. Co-Cajitain Woods was the only letterman to come hack for the 1933 season. Duggan made a convertible end and fullback out of T. J., and he was outstanding at both positions. T. J. was a great help to the Sam Houston team because of his experience and ability. He called the plays from either fullback or end position. Co-Captain Hughes was one of the reasons why Sam Houston did as well as it did in football. Leroy was rated the best center in the city although it was his first year of High School football. Leroy’s defensive playing was outstanding in every game of the year. He is called ’’dimples” because of his backwardness, but when on a football field, the opposing team found that he was anything but backward. FOOTBALL SUMMARY On September 1, sixty football players reported at West End Field in answer to Coach Duggan’s call. It was the greenest material that Sam Houston ever had, for there was only one letterman back from the 1932 season. However, Duggan went to work and developed a splendid team out of this green material. The first week was spent in taking exercise and in reviewing the plays. Then the first and second teams scrimmaged every day, Duggan picking out the weak spots and patching them up. On September 22, the Tigers left for San Antonio to take on Brackenridge High. Being the first game, the Tigers were a little ragged, and as a result Brackenridge won 19-6. This did not hurt the Tigers but made them more determined to win the next game. The following week the Tigers pounced on the St. Thomas Toms and beat them to the tune of 12-0. Sam Houston decided that victory tasted better than defeat, so they worked hard preparing for the Corpus Christi game, in which they were rated 3 S underdogs. The Tiger machine worked smoothly against Corpus Christi High, and as a result the Tigers came out of the game on top. The score was 13-6. The green material was beginning to be seasoned. On October 14, the Tigers took to the road again, this time to meet Corpus Christi Academy. The game was played in a sea of mud, and although Sam Houston was beaten 7-6, the Tigers really outplayed the Academy. The following week the Tigers again took the road, this time accompanied by the Black Battalion and most of the student body of Sam Houston. This time the Tigers met the lighter and faster Royal Purple of Beaumont. During the first half of the game, the Tigers were outplayed by the Royal Purple, but they came back in the second half and kept Beaumont on the defense. The final score was 12-6 in favor of Beaumont. October 27, Sam Houston went to Elin Field to play Goose Creek. The Tigers swamped Goose Creek 21-0. The Tigers played their first interscholastic game the following week when they met the Jefferson Davis Panthers. The Tigers took to the air to defeat the Panthers 12 - 6 . After two consecutive victories, the Tigers fell prey to the San Jacinto Bears. The Tigers fought a hard battle, but at the close of the game San Jacinto had scored 12 points while Sam Houston had been shut out for the first time during the season. Smarting from the blow that San Jaeinto dealt, Sam Houston recuperated and smothered the Milby Buffaloes the following week to the tune of 19-0. Then came the immortal ' ’’Heights-Central” game. Sam Houston fought against the Bulldogs as they had never fought, but Reagan heat the Tigers 12-0. The Tigers were in Bulldog territory many times during the game, but they did not seem to he able to push the ball across the goal. Sam Houston ended the season by winning exactly half of its games, although the Tigers had the greenest team of its history. FOOTBALL SQUAD Front row: Mgr. BASKETBALL SUMMARY The 1933-34 basketball season began shortly after football season was ended. About fifty boys reported to Coach Duggan at the Y.M.C.A. Court. After two weeks of practice. Coach Duggan eliminated all of the boys except fifteen. Just before the Christmas holidays, the entire squad went to Pasadena where they handed the Pasadena quintet a sound thrashing. During the Christmas holidays Coach Duggan went to Indiana, and the team was put into the able hand of Assistant Coach Hudgings. During this period, the team played several practice games. The Tiger quintet beat Pasadena again and trounced the Beaumont Royal Purple in Houston and in Beaumont. Duggan returned as the holidays drew to a close, and he drilled the Tigers for the first interscholastic game. The San Jacinto Bears fell before the Tiger attack to the tune of 49-29. The Tigers showed lots of class. Sam Houston dropped the next two games to Davis and Reagan respectively. Both of these games were close, Davis winning by one point and Reagan winning by three points. The Tiger quintet redeemed itself the following week by beating Milby 27-26. This game ended the first half of the season. As the second half of the season got under way, Sam Houston was defeated by San Jacinto. The boys did not play heads-up basketball, and as a result the Bears won 25-16. The following week Davis again beat Sam Houston; tbis time it was by three points. The Tigers gave the Panthers a real battle until the final whistle blew. Sam Houston won the last two games from Reagan and Milby respectively. The Bulldogs gave the Tigers a close game, the final score being 27-26. Milby did not do as well, the Tigers winning by a score of 40-25. Tbe basketball team ended the season by winning half of the games and finishing third in the city race. Baughman Van Tuyl Hyman Coach Van Tuyl succeeded in arousing the spirits of Sam Houston’s track ability this year, and as a result he has given Sam Houston a representative track team. He has developed some of the inexperienced boys into track stars. Van Tuyl intends to enter his team in seven track meets. Max Hyman has entered six meets this year and has won first place in every one of them. At the City Meet Hyman shattered the old record of 205.8 for the 880 yard dash and established a new mark of 202.4. ’’Maxie” is an all-around athlete, standing out in basketball as well as track. Billy Baughman, although not winning every race, has placed in every meet and has qualified for the State Meet. Billy’s specialty is the 100 yard dash, where com¬ petition is very great. Baughman and Hyman were the only two men to qualify for a letter before the Cosmos went to press. We regret that the complete data of letter- men and meets cannot be published. chvihes Tungate Kendall Prescott Robbins Flake Helton Humphrey Crosson Womack Bates Gripon Buster Selke COSMOS STAFF Myrtle Lee Robbins Mace Tungate.
