Niwdif CEINTRAL HIGH SCHOOL PATERSON, NEW IERSEY In Appreciation The Senior Class gives heartfelt thanks to Mr. Manley, our Principal, for his gen- erous cooperation, understanding, tact, and kindness in helping us to solve our many problems. Sometimes we may have seemed unappreciative but as we leave, we carry with us the memory of his ever- ready willingness to help. To Miss Dunphey and Mr. Burke, our faculty advisers, for their understanding affability, and sound advice. To Mr. Shug, our musical director, for his patient and tireless efforts to make our graduation as beautiful as it was. To Mr. Scowcroft, Miss Tierney, Mr. Maxwell, Miss Pinney for their invalu- able guidance and aid in the publishing of this book. To the members of the faculty for their teaching, firmness with which they have held us to our appointed task, patience in correcting our faults, for their fitting us to meet the responsibilities that are thrust upon us. We are sure that their success in sports is due not only to their own ability, but also to the able leadership they received from our gym teachers. Mrs. jenkinson, Mrs. Cappio and Mrs. Cooper. These teachers have coached us not only in games, but also in the impor- tance of good sportsmanshipg and we who are graduating hope to carry their teachings with us into later life. We now give you a list of our athletes together with the points they have earned in their sports work. MAFALDA BALESTRINO Muff1e has certainly made a success of her high school years. She is as good an athlete as she is a scholar and leads our class with 610 points to date. She wears our 500 point emblem, which is a block C and we wish her as much suc- cess out of school as she has enjoyed while attending school with us. ILLITERARY DIGEST I-Iow important we seem to ourselves! r four long years we have unconcerned- attended Central High School, and then at once we find ourselves forced into : limelight. We hold the respect and niration of all the school-every single :lergraduate looks up to us. How we 'el in our superiority! We even begin analyze our thoughts, remember trivial :cdotes of our wide-eyed freshman .rs. How many times we re-live in our n minds our four years at Central, each 2 a story in itself, each widely differ- ' in our attitude toward it. First came the freshman year. Were we ren? I wonder. I know I spent half of gym period the first day, scrurrying ough the basement looking for the ierground tunnel to the gyms. And n, later, I tried to find the fifth floor get to a class in room 45. We did have a freshman guide but all emember of her is a vanishing form wn some stairway or around a corner. was a regular game trying to keep up 'h her, but it wasn't quite fair-she al- ys won! I never caught up with her. Phat first term firmly disciplined us, , in regard to cutting classes. I'll never get Mr. McNerney impressively telling the dire results when two senior stu- nts of his, cut their last day's classes. I nk he achieved his purpose. Dur sophomore year was not quite so l. We were just beginning to get used things. We didn't go up down-stair- vs anymore, or sit innocently at the chers' tables in the lunch room. f I remember rightly, this was the year rst got interested in football. About all ver knew about the game was that the 11 with the ball had to go through the 2 and make a touchdown. Nevertheless, 'as still capable of growing very enthu- atic, and would often go home hardly e to use my voice. knd-oh yes! This was about the time en I found out that if one joins the 3. A. while he is still a freshman, he has a chance to make dozens and dozens of points, whereas, if he joins later, he won't get so much for it. So I didnt' join the S. G. A. Sorrowfully to me, or otherwise, my sophomore year soon slipped past and not much later I found myself right in the middle of my junior year. Environment and the influence of teachers were begin- ning to take an effect on me by then. I started to have a really intelligent look on my face. I walked through the halls feeling self-assured and self-confident. I also became adept at making discrim- minations. A problem like this would be likely to come upi I would like very much to go out tonight-is my history home- work so terribly important, or would it be all right for me to skip it just once? I don't think it ever took me more than thirty seconds to solve that one. Beginning in the third year, some of my acquaintances graduated. It was then that I realized how the school changes. As girls and boys that I know personally began to leave school, and many familiar faces disappeared, it made me all the more realize how fast time does go by. As each graduating class left, our indi- vidual class seemed to grow closer to- gether, and now, by the time we have reached our last term, as we have not made many acquaintances among the lower classmen, we know each, other fairly intimately. , Nevertheless, that isn't what concerns us most now. All commonplace things are dimmed in our joy of welcoming the day we will be free to go out and conquer the world. We have finally arrived at the coveted position of being members of the graduating class. We count the days to the time when our troubles will all be over. But what happens after graduation? Funny, isn't it? How we long to be back in school again. -Alice Riley. Page Fifty-one OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN INDUSTRY .As I stand at the point of graduation from high school I am making a survey of the opportunities before me. There are so many roads open to women that the matter of choosing one line of work be- comes more and more difficult. As time goes on, we find that women have been going out from schools in in- creasing numbers until today there are many fields of work from which a woman can select her occupation. Among them are: the professional world, the political world, the business world, the service world, and the world of artistry. The professional world has but recently permitted women to pass through its guarded portals as doctors, lawyers, mem- bers of the clergy, architects, interior dec- orators, and teachers. Today there are many woman doctors and lawyers already who have very successful practices, but in the next five or ten years we shall see rriany more than ever before enter these fields. There have been few women as clergymen, architects and interior decora- tors, but today and in the years to come the number will be greatly multiplied. Al- though women have always been teachers, it is only lately that they have been al- lowed to teach in advanced branches of learning. It is only in late years that women have been allowed to have a voice in the gov- ernment. They have proved themselves as having such very practical ideas on gov- ernment affairs that a new field of occu- pation is now open to women in the po- litical world. We already have women in very important ofiices and it is very pos- sible, I think, that in the next decade there Page Fifty-two will be a woman in the highest offic the United States. In the business world we find n women holding positions as .ecreta and stenographers. There are also n women executives in great business cerns, and many women owners of sl and stores. But an opportunity for e woman who tries earnestly to be a sux is always present. The service world includes the nu the welfare workers, and the various c occupations with regards to hel others. Of course, women almost ent comprise the employed in this field cause they are better suited than 1 Women will always monopolize this of work. The last field of work, the artistry f is always open to anyone who has te which can be used as a benefit to the of the world. This line of work incl' the painters, the sculptors, the music. the dancers, and all the classic arts. earlier days women were discourz from displaying any sort of talent, today the slightest genius of a persc cultivated and brought out to its fu effect. Torrents of water flowed down the tiger's throat and he gasped and sputtered for breath. With a final gasp, he rolled over and died. He had drowned from our hunter's sweat.
