Julie Johnson Joins Golf Teom By Renee Thomas Male sports domination at Muskogee High School -came to an apparent end in 1975-76, thanks to Ms. Julie Johnson and federal legislation passed by congress. Julie was a member of the Rougher golf team and aside for the swimming team--which had female com- Volumn 61 1975-76 Muskogee, Okla. Page 13 petitors--she was the only young lady listed on the ros- -ter of a here-to-fore all-male squad. Unlike the swim team where the girls competed only against other girls, Julie's Hoppositionu came from male golfers. She was in competition with nine other linksters for the five top spots on the team. The active senior--she was also a member of the drill team--shot in the low 90s, a score which several of her male counterparts would have like to have recorded. Roughers Ploy ln Tough She worked on her game prior to the start of school so she could be competitive enough to play on the s uad Cklohomo Six Leogue Muskogee High's foot- ,with the new formation fOlzawski took over the Rougher Head Coach Jack Hopkins said he hail noth- ing against a coed golfer on his team. He said she was treated just like any other member of the squad. She played if her score was one of the five best. she didn't if it wasn't. .Coach Hopkins pointed out that Julie was not the -first girl to go out for golf but added she was the first to take things seriously. I had other girls come out for golf but they didnlt take things too seriously and they did not last long. Julie, however, had a definite ball season started with a bang but then the Roughers turned sour .for the three outings be- fore establishing them- selves again with a key Oklahoma Six Confer- ence victory over Tulsa Edison. ,The rebirth of the desire to play. However most of the starting team was made up of juniors. -The backfield had jun- ,the golf team. I was happy he ac- cepted me because all I wanted was a chance to play. Julie also related that she was accepted well by her ,male counterparts. They kidded me at first but it was good natured kidding, nothing personal. The guys pdidn't play any harder because I was a girl. More than anything else they played harder because they wanted .to win the state and conference golf championships. ing-good results. Girls could paftjeipate on the swimming team but they competed Qnly against other girls and secutive games before tasting defeat. They lost in the Regional Finals after the Bi-District tournaments. Mrs. Har- rold also coached the girls tennis team. Jim Wilson coached .the girls basketball team. The first day of practice some 50 young ladies tried out for the A15 positions on the lsguad. The girls team Musko ee Hi h School started a girls ,spring track program ,during the 1974-75 school year. That pro- this year to include a cross country team -Ray Wise coached both teams. Also for the first time a coed was a member gf the Muskogee High School golf team. Julie Johnson, a senier, joined the golf club and was one of the tgp llil on ,the sguad, coached by Jack Hopkins.
