Fife-Drum Corp Represents MHS ,.......,..,.. M. Volumn 61 1975-76 Muskogee, Okla. Page 10 What Is Our By Kelly Wiggins and Parris Boies What is Bicentennial? is Bicentennial Now? Bicentennial is an Era. Bicentennial is People. Bicentennial is in the Heart of America. Bicentennial is Young and Old, You and me. Bicentennial is Fireworks, Parades, Red, White, and Blue streamers, apple pie, hot dogs, and home- made ice-cream. Bicentennial is commitment to improve the quality of life for all Americans to enjoy during the third cen- tury of our country. Every Muskogee High School student has an op- portunity to participate in the Bicentennial-- to con- tribute, develop, commemorate and celebrate 200 years of tradition in America. We celebrate our country's 200th birthday with dif- ferent activities during this school year. Beginning with the Muskogee State Fair in September, a Mus- kogee School's Bicentennial Displayl' was put to- gether by all the Muskogee schools. An UAmerican Issues Bookletsl' was checked out to Mrs, Barbara Staggs, speech teacher here at MHS, to be used by her students for writing Bicentennial speeches. A Bicen- tennial play, 'tThe Last of Mrs. Lincoln? was pre- sented by Mrs. Joan Murray's drama classes. Other classes participated in special writings. Some English classes made plans to prepare pamphlets on Bicentennial? future centennial 'f2076 . During the halftime of each Muskogee High School football game, the MHS band, UThe Pride of Mus- kogee, presented a special Bicentennial show. The most memorable was the one during the Tulsa East Central game which featured different 'flags which flew over our Country. The band also had a special t'Fife and Drum Corp which was designated as Muskogee's official Bicenten- nial representative by Governor David Boren. The Corp also prarticipated in many state-wide events and was a featured attraction at many parades in the Mus- kogee area. The CHIEFTAIN celebrated the Bicentennial with a special three page section. Other Bicentennial events were recorded as they happened in the Activities sec- tion of the yearbook. Lots of Bicentennial activities were suggested and many were set. Some activities that were set were the t'Special Bicentennial Week , and Oklahoma Heri- tage Weeku, both in November. In February the Bicen- tennial was celebrated with the All School Musical, Oklahoma . Each night of the musical was a special night including 'iLieutenant Governor's Night and Governor's Night . Before each presentation of the musical there was a f'Bicentennial Pre-Show . The musical was a great success which was an appropiate climax to a great Bicentennial year at Muskogee High School. Muskogee Highis offi- cial Bicentennial repre- sentative was the 'iFife and Drum Corps. The Corp which consists of 10 MHS band students, was also proclaimed as an official Bicentennial organization of the state of Oklahoma by Gover- nor David Boren and Lieutenant Governor George Nigh. The, Corp, organized by Jerry Huffer, direc- tor of bands at Mus- kogee High School, was formed to provide a mu- sical entertainment rep- resenting the Revolu- tionary period of our country. The uniforms were gold, green and white and were of styled after Revolutionary dress. The Corp con- sisted of one flag bearer, three drum- mers and six flute play- ers. From June 27, when Governor Boren pro- claimed the Corp as one of the official state rep- resentatives during the Bicentennial year, the group participated in many functions. Other notable appear- ances included the Mus- kogee State Fair, the Muskogee Bicentennial Celebration, the Tulsa State Fair, and a spe- cial show during each performance of Mus- kogee High School's Mu- sicial, HOklahoma. The Corp performed during halftime of each MHS football game and at halftime at some of the baskektball games. Each football halftime show was centered around our country's celebration of the Bicen- tennial. Members of the se- lected group included Robert Broaduss, Tommy Holleyman, Kevin Sublett, Steve Smith, Lynda Torbett, Annette Hixson, Sharon Lawhead, Jane Aldridge, Kerry Huffer and Vicki Bloss.
