Published by the Senior Class of Central High School, Muskogee, Oklohomo HHEWHH U 41' Youth today, men tomorrow, so may the annals of time set down this record of high school days. In compiling this book an effort has been made to illustrate the work done in this school, pre- paring the youth of today to be- come the men of tomorrow. This book is a memory of today-the day when all looked forward to- tomorrow. ln appreciation of his endless services, leadership, guidance, and inspiration in preparing us for tomorrow, the Senior Class of i940 dedicates this twenty-fifth edition of the Chieftain to Mr. Kenneth R. Burchard, who for the past twelve years has directed the printing department at Central, and gained a place of recognition in that field. To this versatile craftsman . . . printer, photographer, en- graver, and teacher. . . we wish happiness and success in the posi- tion he is now undertaking at Carnegie Institute of Technology. As Superintendent of the Muskogee City School System, Mr. J. R. Holmes has for the past eight years supervised the operation of the schools. He has always worked for the ad- vancement and progress of the school children and given them every advantage in preparing them for the future. As a service to the community, five business men donate their time and efforts to school problems. These members are elected by the citizens of Muskogee and are responsible for the operation cf the school system. Mr. Arthur Catlett, manager of the Commercial Lumber Company, serves as a chairman of the board, and Mr. J. A. Lathim as vice-president. Mr. E. D. Cave as secretary, and Mr. C. A. Ambrister and Mr. W. H. Cunningham compose the rest of the board. ......,....-.,..Y..........-....,...,.,,.-.... .-.,,,,- , ., , , 53 sg! 5 ,P s lf? To lend a helping hand on all occasions, and give a word of encouragement to the students, is the work of L. M. Speaker, principal of Central High School. Advancing from the position of ci faculty member to principal in l925, Mr. Speak- er has been the directing factor in Central High ever since. He makes it possible for a staff of 63 teachers to work together harmoniously and promote the cooperation necessary for a school the size of Central. Mr. Speaker is a genuine friend, and has been of great service to students in preparing them for the future. Through his efforts many im- provements have been brought to Central, and he is continually working for more. As principal, Mr. Speaker is a cog in the great wheel of educa- tion, the wheel that is constantly turning out boys and girls to be the adults of tomorrow. A Real Leader V if C X F! Hnuumvulu wumn r - i I I the matter of senior pictures, is Paul Leggett, Senior Editor, and lrwin Brown, photographer, for the Scout and Chieftain. Marjorie Moore serves as Assistant Editor of the Chieftain. The job of reading all the copy for errors was alloted to J. M. Green, the School Editor. Four girls handle the lines and points of eacr journalism student and hold down the position of News Editors. These are Mary Louise Huckin, Mary Jo Garrett, Margaret McNeely and Adelia Pierce. To add a touch of humor to the paper Charlotte Gilkison and Betty Pearl Cloud serve as Feature Editors. Norma Jane Williams an Dorothea Miller take care of the Exchange de- partment, while Jerry Poole, Don Howell and Jack Johnson turn in material on all the sport activities. The column, Junior High Life is writ- ten by Juliette Stolper, a member of Junior High. Reporters for the Scout are Eugenia Boulineau, Imogene Collins, Jim Garrison, Louise Helm, Bonita May, Juanda Miller, Mary Sparks and John Toney. Circulation Manager is Maxine Boyd and Assistant, Kathleen Hill. Paul Sadler has charge of the advertising and Louise Bates, Jane Kilgore and Kendall Barger are assistants. As an informer and distributor of the school news, the Scout is published each week by the students in the Journalism class. It brings en- joyment to all who read it, and does much in acquainting the boys and girls in the school with one another. This publication is one of Central's oldest divisions, and has gained re- cognition by the National Scholastic Press As- sociation. Miss Charlotte Kennedy supervises the work of the class, and bends her effort into teaching the students the training they will need for future journalistic careers. Not only does the class publish the school paper, but they also study the essentials of writing, the grammar that deals particularly with journalism. To those students who have achieved the honor of being in the Scholastic Press Association special tribute is given. To become a member of this organization it is nec- essary to have published 900 lines in the Scout. This division of the English department is most important to those students who intend to be the future writers and newspapermen of tomor- row. Elwin Hatfield has for the past year been ff Editor-in-Chief of the Central High School Scout. He has filled his position well, and edited some of the best papers in Scout history. Serving as his assistant is Sybil Purdin, who is a big help to Elwin in getting out the paper. Robert Morris, whose official title is Associate Editor, has com- piled this annual, the Chieftain. lt is Robert's business to know each picture by its first name and each page by a glance. Helping Robert in MM I Tomorrow's Paper . . . Early Edition E i Q E ba s E E E CentraI's Contribution To Science Centuries ago, science and its properties were considered to be bits of mysticism only revealed to a chosen few. Today the explana- tions of scientific actions are more and more being understood by the civilized world. The age of mystics is just a memory of the dim past, but the visions of the future are powerful and thrilling in their near- ness. It is the work of the science department of Central to bring about a desire in the students to promote and help in the visions of tomorrow. The science department of Central is under the direction of George T. McKinney, who teaches an excel- lent course in high school chemistry. The chemistry laboratory is equip- ped with the modern apparatus necessary to conduct the experi- ments, and the students spend sev- eral hours a week in the lab. Deter- mining the weights of various sub- stances, and the durability of them lr-ad to surprising discoveries. In physics. the students learn the more technical side of science, and are taught more about the mathematics involved in weights. For those boys and girls who want to be the future chemists, doctors and research work ers of tomorrow, the science depart- ment of Central is striving to pre- pare them in the Work that they have chosen. Languages Are Practical Being able to speak several foreign languages is a mark of cultureg so Central High school has a special department in this line. Excellent two-year and four-year courses are offered in Spanish and Latin, respectively. Latin, which is the oldest of the romance languages, gives the pupils a definite idea of the life and activities of the early Romans. It presents a background for other languages, as many words are derived from On the other hand, Americans are becoming more and more closely associated with Spanish, the language of the Latin Ameri- can and provincial Spanish people. Central's foreign language department has as its head Miss Bonna H. Miller, who also teaches the Latin classes. Mr. Aubrey Paden directs the Spanish classes. In many professions Latin especially is quite necessary. Doctors find it instrumental in their work. Those who are interested in research in the future will see that many manuscripts are written in the ancient language of the Romans. Students can take two years of Spanish which will give them a good foundation for any work in that field they wish to continue. It is, therefore, impor- tant for the above reasons that the study of Latin and Spanish be stressed in the schools. p Future Teachers of America The Future Teachers of America is one of Centra1's newest and most worth-while organizations. 1940 being only its second year in the school, it already has a membership of 20 boys and girls. Preparing young people to be teachers is the objective of the club, although all the members are not planning to be teachers, for they believe they will profit by the or- ganization, since a better understanding is brought between the pupil and teacher. The F. T. A. is a national organization, and Muskogee chapter was one of the first in Oklahoma. Mr. J. R. Holmes, superintendent of Muskogee City schools is president of the state organization this year, and Hoy Bohanon is state student president. The work of the club is mainly concerned with promoting other chapters in the state. Letters have been issued through- out the district encouraging other schools to form chapters. A program initiating the members into the club was presented this year, and each member gave a brief talk on the club before accepting a red carnation, the flower of the Muskogee chap- ter. Miss Bessie M. Huff is sponsor ofthe organization and is giving ,all the help they will need to become the Future Teachers of America. . ,f . Upper left officers of-the F. T. Alice Fryer is president of the club, and has charge of regular weekly meet- injs. Latin is one of the most important langu- owes, as it is the foundation of many others. T e Latin Club realizes this tact, and do all they can to bring better understanding between the ancient lite of the Romans and the modern lite of tcday. The organization is sponsored by Miss Bonna Miller, who advises the members on things of interest to the club. Members are taken in at the beginning cf each semester, and the new members are obliged to present the weekly pro- gram. W l INIlHSIHIHl WUHHI Skilled Workmen Of Tomorrow Time flies when one is working toward a goal. Boys in the woodwork classes are learning to be the skilled workmen of tomorrow. Future builders will come from the mechanical drawing classes, who are taught a craft in which accuracy and neatness figure most highly. Different types of mechanics are taught in the shop classes and the boys get varied inform- ation on auto parts and paint and re-decoration projects. Many boys are interested in the me- chanical drawing classes, because it is a good place to develop creative ability. This is an important phase in the curriculum, since it pre- pares a great many boys for the future. Printing the Chieftain. Mr. Kenneth R. Burcliard, past p rinting instructor. Mr. Sherman Lees directing Q class in printing, Operating the linotype machines. Let's Go To Press Hats off to the printing department for being such a help to Central! Not only do they print the Scout and the Chieftain, but all the printed materials for the Muskogee city school system. These boys are being trained for their position as professional printers in the world of tomorrow. With the modern equipment of the print- in i department, the boys can learn the different t-,fpen nf printing and choose the individual line that suits them best. Boys begin the printing course in the tenth grade, and learn the history of printing and printing mathematics gradually working up to becoming photo-engravers, lino- type operators, job or cylinder pressmen or other kinds of printers. When his course is completed, each boy has passed the test of all types of print- ers and is prepared to specialize in one type of work or take a job as a versatile printer. I Q 1 i I 1 1 r 5 5 Mr. Arlie J. Geymann, Printing Instructor, center, Students developing pictures for the Scout They Mean Business Learning to be the future bankers and financiers of tomorrow is no easy job, but Central boys and girls have found that patience and hard work are a big help. Shorthand and typing may mean hitting the keys and scratching a pen to some folks, but it means a job and a future for these commercial students. Bookkeeping comes right along, too, to be a help for those days after graduation. By handling the school's finance, students get practical training in banking and bookkeep- ing, while the typing students receive valuable experience from typing term sheets and other materials for the teachers. These students also take courses in economics and commercial law to round out their knowledge of the commercial world. School, in the classroom or at home, may have been taken rather lightly before, but these commercial law students realize they have a job to do, and they mean to do it. Bookkeeping, stenography, and auditing classes shown above are typical groups in the commercial department. . Therefore the nirls interested in commercial work have seen Fit to organize a club in which they strike a happy medium between work and play. As one of Central's oldest organizations, the Commer- cial club, recently renamed the K-mesh Klub , has played an important part in molding the futures of many girls, who have chosen steno- araphy as their profession. At the weekly meet- ing of the K-mesh Klub , a auest speaker tells the girls about his particular line of work in the commercial field, so they can decide what phase of work thev wish to continue in the future. Girls like to forget their lessons once in a while, and really have a good time, Once a month the members of the K-mesh Klub en- tertain with a social meeting. Buffet suppers and line parties seem to be the favorite type of enjoyment, and luncheons and parties are held in the homes of various members. For the nast few years Mrs. O. T. Gilbertson and Miss Eunice Newman have been the co-sponsors ot the organization. A HHHSHE WHIHH Paint Brush and Easel A swish ofa brush with the help ofa hand and o picture is painted or maybe a stage set is drawn. Such is the work of the art classes. Central's art department is very efficient, be- cause the art students see their place in the world of tomorrow, whether commercial artists or portrait painters, to be important for giving happiness and beauty to humanity. Two helpful organizations in Central are the Make-Up Club and the Stagecraft Club. The Make-up Club is very beneficial in assisting the performers in assembly programs, while the Stagecraft boys are responsible for the lighting effects and stage properties for plays. There Shall Be Music Music sooths the savage beast, and it also proves an enjoyable entertainment to Central students. The Boys' Glee club is under the direction of Mr. Howard Smith, Central music instructor. The Glee club meets three times each week before school, and rehearses for the assembly programs and other entertainment that they assist with, in the school. Boys of all ages in the high school are admitted in the organization providing their voices are of a nice quality, and they are of a dependable character. Each member of the organization knows his proper position in the club, and does his best to fulfill it, This is an excellent chance for young boys to receive training in cooperation as well as in voice culture, either of which will be bene- ficial in their work in the future. Coach Paul Marston 7 TO 6 IS FINAL SCORE IN SAPULPA STRUGGLE Seven to six was the final score as the Sapulpa Chieftains nased out the Green and White at Sapulpa on September 26. Big Eddy Davis was the standout for Central with his superb kicking. The Chieftains presented a tricky offensive although having a small team. PORKERS DEFEATED IN THIRD GAME OF SEASON Smarting from the Sapulpa game, the Roughers decisively trounced the Fayetteville High school Porkers I2 to 0 in the new stadium, October I. Sophomore Jimmy Douthit provided all the thrills and scored the first touch- down for Central. LeRoy Jones, Louis Nevitt, Pete Stamper, LeRoy Wise, Authur Perryman BARTLESVILLE ON SHORT END OF 25 TO O SCORE Still riding high, the Green and White rolled over a helpless Bart- lesville eleven 25 to O, October 6, in a tree-scoring home game. Again little Jimmy Douthit was in the limelight with o 5l yard touchdown. NONE SCORE IN MUSKOGEE Mc ALESTER GAME A scoreless tie finally recorded as the Roughers invaded the stomping grounds of McAlester's Buffaloes, October l3. The Green and White, after winning two straight games, were somewhat over-confident and neither team could make much headway. Captain Sonny Robertsg Kickoff at the Muskogee-Tulsa game Herbert Luttrell, Kenneth Ritz, Oscar Cagle, Bob Anthis, Dudley Carson OKMULGEE ROMPS CENTRAL IN SIXTH BATTLE 36 TO 6 ln one of the worst defeats at their hands in years, the Central Roughers were stopped cold by a powerful Okmulgee Buldog squad 36 to 6. Muskogee's lone tally came as a result of a fumble, while the Bulldogs scored almost at will. BEARS BARELY BEAT MUSKOGEE 21 TO O Although rated the under- dogs, the Roughers actually out- played the Champion Ft. Smith Grizzlies for two quarters, but the Bears finally caught up and defeated them 21 to O on Nov- ember 3. This makes two wins in as many years for the Grizzlies. Co-Captain Eddie Davisg Attempted field gold at the Muskogee-Tulsa Game Merle Burney, Bill Baxter, Jack Jobe, Billy Hilton, Clyde Chancelor ROUGHERS STAY ON WITH CAPITOL HILL REDSKINS Experts were again wrong as the Roughers held the invading Capitol Hill Redskins, coached by former Central coach Robert J. Cortright, to a 20 to 20 tie. Both teams fought as if it were a championship game, and Blair Brown, Redskin back, gave the Green and White a tough even- ing. CLASSEN COMETS SMEAR MUSKOGEE CENTRAL 40 TO O One of the worst defeats in Rougher history was recorded when the Classen Comets smear- ed the Green and White invad- ers 40 to O, November I7. The fast moving City backfield pro- vided all the interest as predict- ed and scored two touchdowns every quarter. TURKEY DAY GAME TURNS IN FAVOR OF ROUGHERS Seven to O stood the final score, as the Roughers again de- feated their traditional Turkey day rivals, the Tulsa Braves. The game was played in the newly christened Indian BowI on a very muddy field, which enabled Central to turn a Tulsa fumble into a winning touchdown. He is a steady man from the free throw line. His return neyt year definitely will bclster the Rougher hopes. Coach Vernon H. Mullen J. W. ODOM-Senior . J. W. did not see much action this year, be- cause of the number of younger boys and re- serves. He went out for the cage teom last year and this entitles him to a letter. DONALD HOWELL-Senior lneligible the first part of the season, last year's captain and all-conference guard, Don Howell, returned to Central the second semester and to his old position on the squad. Since he is the steodiest man on the squad, his shoes will be hard to fill next year. Captain Herbert Luttrell Central's Hoopsters C. J. Pl ERCE-Junior C. J. was recruited from the West High Eagles. Playing a while on the B team, he improved so much at guard that he advanced to the reg- ular squad. He is a steady defensive man and should be a good bet for next year's cagers. ARCHIE BRADLEY-Junior Switched from center to guard the second semester, big Archie has been one of the main- stays of the Rougher cagers this season. He scored in practically every game and will be a valuable asset to Central next yeor. PAUL CHILSON-Junior High point man of this year's team and the long shot artist, Paul made the first string his first year out and has been a major factor in all Rougher wins. He scored I4 points in the second Sapulpa game. He will be a strong con- tender for conference scoring honors next yean. Central's Hoopsters BOB NEELEY-Graduate Bob was a fast moving forward and high point man until his graduation at mid-term. He completed three years of athletic service to Central High. His loss will hit the football team hard as well as the basketball squad. JAMES ROSS-Junior This boy was the find of the season. Nick- named Squaw by his team mates, he proved to be a scoring threat at all times. He scored in every game he was in, making l4 points in the Sapulpa game along with Paul Chilson. He is a sure thing for the Rougher team next season. ERN EST McALLl STER-J un ior Ernie was a very valuable player last year to the Roughers, but had to quit school this year after having played only three games for Central. ln these three games he proved that he was a great player. HERBERT LUTTRELL-Graduate Captain Luttrell of i939-i940 Roughers was a fast-moving guard and very valuable to his team. Herby as he is known to his teammates will be a great loss to the Roughers. He has participated for two years for Central. Central's Hoopsters HERSHEL MARTI N-J unior Hershel is a forward who should make a good addition to Coach Vernon MuIlen's cage hope- fuls of next year. BILL POTTER-J unior Another recruit from West High is Bill Potter. Although only a junior, he rapidly developed into one of the best shots and passers on the team. He will be a sure bet for spotlight honors in next year's basketball season. GENE BRIGGS-Graduate Gtne played first semester as center until his graduation at mid-term. He played in every game, and his loss was a blow to the Green and White. EDDIE DAVIS-Graduate An all-round athlete for the Roughers until his graduation at mid-term, Eddie was a good steady guard and a dead eye shot. He will con- tinue his sport career at Oklahoma University at Norman. Making Their Bodies Fil' Star football and basketball players are not the only ones in Central interested in physical fitness. No, not by a long shotl Boys and girls in the physical education classes are learning how to be healthy and happy by many exercises and games. lntra-mural sports are encouraged between the classes. Basketball and baseball are two of the most popu'ar sports, but tennis, golf and badminton are quickly becoming the pas- time of many students. Central's athletic depart- ment is under the supervision of young men and women, who understand boys and girls and can give them the training they need for their work in the world of tomorrow. It has as its presiding officer, Robert Davis, president of the student body, and the membership is made up of the councilmen and the represen- tatives, or those students re- presenting the adviser classes. The council is mainly concern- ed with matters of interest to the whole school, and meets regularly during the school. Members of the Student Coun- cil have the opportunity of learning parliamentary pro- cedure, and developing ora- tory. This training will be of special importance to those boys and girls who wish to be the future representatives of their states in the future. In the fall of the year, the debate class works strenuously preparing their speeches for fall meets, and they keep working on them until the year is over. By Christmas the boys have chosen partners and are well on their way to entering contests in debates, oratory, extemporaneous speaking, after-dinner speaking and poetry reading. Not only boys compose this class, but several girls entered the group and have brought decided recognition to Central. These boys and girls of the debate class have made a start on their life work, if they wish to con- tinue in it, and are making the most of their chance to prepare themselves for the future. As a result the senior class of l94O has crammed every possible bit of activity into their last year at Central. To start the year oft with a bang, they selected the officers and sponsors to preside over them during the year. On all occasions the Senior Class has taken the lead in presenting assemblies, and assisting teachers in their class work. In March, the class gave a very succesful Senior Play entitled Almost Eighteen , and for fun and frolic Hobo Day was celebrated as usual.
