'OU marejust on the, threshold • mgue eohoes, dream whispers e dmp. clandestine voices quietly Preparol So we come here to this place of exaggerated eagerness to prepare. Encumbered by goals, frothing with ambition, filthy with spirit, we come willing to be led, altered, groping for a chance to be tried. 2 3 Alma Mater Alma Mater Central High Praise to thee we sing May we strive as days go by Honor to her bring May we cherish every thought of the years gone by Alma Mater that we love Praise to Central High Gullible and naive, many of us uncertain, betrayed by our own wonder. We leave worry in morning mirrors, swagger forth, ego-alert, to live unscathed, naked and honest, but also vulnerable. 6 7 ffflJGIE BOOSTERS nrius Study (prepare), cram, exam — four years, a repetitious rhythm: pencils and typewriters, busy erasers, spoons in stained coffeecups, shuffling papers— droning, night-long symphonies of learning, learning . . . and still those questions at the back door of your mind: Why? What am I after? Who am I, anyway? But you shut that door — quickly — before answers can take form. No time for such questions now. Go back. You must go back to your books. Raw and bitter — that's you world and bittersweet. I didn't come here to be disillusioned. Sometimes it's hard to play the game. Sometimes I don't think it’s worth it. Yet this moment of pain is strangely pleasant; now I can see myself — and you — with new clarity. Is this also a part of my preparation? You're too imminent, world! Too demanding. Wait. A little time . . . Don't strain and threaten me with impending responsibility. With all this striving to be adult, a little time . . . Please give me a little time to still be young. Here we go becoming again: changing, shifting, assimilating, fitting new patterns — a human kaleidoscope of fragmented visions, a polyphony of many voices making odd harmonies. Trying to fit into you, world. 15 Trying to become a part of each other. “ p no n ieLj sn punoje e ai We relate to others with a word, a look, a touch, a motion: We relate c one, one to two, and one to many. How we relate is a personal rogitet, in the mind arid heart. As one of a crowd or one of a pair, you take yo place in the rank and file o f humanity. You stand among rrrany as Wf individual. . . unique, rare, and beautiful. i A ILIUM,, r J PATSY BRIMLEY Prrs. .ERllLON PRICK R POWlU. Trcis. On the night of November 2nd we were all there — the people of Central High. The final day. . . evidence of red and blue everywhere: red and blue of pom-poms at the pep rally . . . red and blue in the clothes . . . red and blue in the spirit of the Cougars. 64 Thursday night — the bonfire flames leaping, lighting up faces. Faces on a hillside, together. Faces . . . captured for our memory. Then the parade — bringing the faces of Central High to the people, showing the town the Cougar spirit. Then the game. We yelled — gaily, noisily, excitedly, because we knew the year would bring many examples of victory — some hidden, some blaring in our faces. But through it all ran a ribbon of sturdy silence. Togetherness can't be explained by noises or words — it's best considered in the quietness of our afterthoughts. 67 Homecoming Week 68 at Miller LEA SIBLEY ROSE KAY WEBSTER MILLER HOMECOMING COURT PHYLLIS WILLIAMS DARLENE LEWIS AMY FOUCHE — Flower Girl DANA FAULK MIKE WADDELL — Crown Bearer e see them at pep rallies, football and basketball games. All night rushing, nail biting, and lay-out sheets . . . Was this all? There was something else. What was it? People! We found people... in activities and in organizations. We found enthusiasm. People laughing, talking, living! We saw futures being molded; We saw hopes and determinations. And that was when we discovered. . . People. The Miller Jr. Cougar Cats defeated Jonesboro MacArthur, West Memphis Wonder, and Marianna to become Regional Champions. Named to all tournament team were James Crockett, Jerry Jones, and Secevers Parker. Crockett was also Most Valuable Player. Their coach, Bobby Altom, has been at Miller four years and has had a championship team for three. 168 The newly organized Girls' Volleyball Team has added a new dimension to sports at Central. The team, coached by Ms. Hurst, competed with seasoned teams in a recent tournament and returned with third place. 169 So now lam prepared. They have handed me a gilted sheet of paper and said: Go forth into the world. Assert. So here I stand, formally deprived of my high school ignorance, looking at you, world. And all I can see is that you're still out there, world. Behind this facade of education, am I really ready ? All I have been through should have prepared me. But the same forebodings and beckoning voices are still me. Yet there is a difference, a strange certainty, I can feel, but not explain. For while you may be out there, world, I know you're in here, too. To Those of You Who Qupported the COUGAR We Thank You.
