Twenty Knowledge Gained in Language Clubs I - SPANISH CLUB-Row 1-M. Diskin, A. Mar- golis, S. Velick, R. Berk, L. Sarko, P. Ivory I. Nader, Miss Brakeman, G. Kulish. Row 2-D. Gross, E. Axelrod, F. Adler, B. De- Piard, C. Brnnsky, J. Edelheit, F. Hoffman R. Horwitz, N. Sprecher. The purpose of the Spanish Club is to further students' practice and enjoyment of the Spanish language, and to teach them the culture of Spanish speaking countries. The club's program is varied. It includes games, skits, and activities. This year the Spanish Club Chorus made a recording of Spanish folk songs at WDTR, the school radio station. To add to the club's entertainment, each Christmas a pinata is made. The pinata is filled with candy and other treats, and after the hard task of breaking it, the celebration gets underway. The officers for the past year were: Laura Sarko, president, Phyllis Ivory, vice-president, and Rona Berk, treasurer. Upon the graduation of Ida Nader in January, Nina Sprecher took over as secretary. Miss Eleanor Brakeman sponsors the club. The Latin Club gives students a chance to meet informally, have fun, and use their knowledge of Latin outside the classroom atmosphere. With the able aid of Mrs. Bush, an enjoyable agenda was savored by all members. First, there were terrible but harmless initiations, including a trip to the lower world. The club held joint meet- ings with Mumford and Mackenzie, plus trips to the Classical Museum in Ann Arbor. The Ann Arbor visit included a picnic. . . I ' At the end of each term a medal ofaccomplish- ment is awarded to seniors -who have achieved all A's in eight semesters of Latin. ' Officers for the fall term were: co-counsels, Rich- Row 3-- F. Mathis, B. McCants, J. Ivory, I. Emmerman, A. Gray, M. Farber, S. Rapp, S. Brown, B. Falbaum. Row 4-M. Ott, M. Gaines, H. Goodman, A. Young, A. Arfa, C. Strickland, M. Bragman, C. Jones, B. Holdengraber, M. Heckler. ard Sternberg and Ellen Averbuch, scribo, Marilyn Weinberg, historian, Alicia Margolis, and quaestor, Sue Nathan. In the spring, Alicia Margolis and Philip Berns took over as co-counsels, Sam Dorf- man became scribo, Barbara Simon was historian, and Helen Friedman was quaestor. Music, games, fun, and culture are the general fields of activity covered by the French Club. The purpose of the club is obvious: To carry on a varied program of French outside the regular classroom. Heading the club in the fall were president, Mar- sha Lowingerg vice-president, Winifred Ledger, sec- retary, Mitzi Rachleffg and treasurer, Gloria Manela. As the snow cleared so did the old officers and we found Mitzi Rachleff as president, Winifred Ledger as veep, Esther Schey reading the minutes, and Ora Kutnick collecting dues. Miss Phyllis Ward sponsors the club. On the term's list of activities was a French What's My Line? panel. A speaker from U. of D., Mr. Fleck, showed the club slides of Europe, which featured France. Among the other games, French hangman was tested at one meeting. Dominant on the list of activities were musical programs. The French Club has many up and coming chanteuses. All three clubs worked together this year to put on a complete language show. The show included French songs, the latest Latin-American dances, and authentic old Latin poetry. This language show topped off a highly successful season for the Lang- uage Clubs.

Tennenhouse, D. Epel, H .Epstein, M. Schneider, I-I. Eisenman, A. Goldstein. only-two Under the direction of Mr. Clifford E. White, speech and dramatics teacher, his assistant Burton Schwartz, and Stage Mother Betsy Wilson, the senior class of June, 1955 presented one of William Shakespeare's most loved comedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Midsummerl' by Will, as the cast fondly called him, is a play of plays, combining the lives of three kinds of people, mortals, immortals, and workers, into one humorous theme. The principle characters of the senior play were: Puck, David Moscow and Nehemiah Pitts, Lysander, Burton Sirling Deme- trius, Gerald Hoshkovitzg Helena, Rochelle Klemp- ner and Lois Feldsteing Hermia, Phyllis Kaplan and Bluma Goldberg, Bottom, Bill Swartz, Oberon, Hadar Ctranaderg Titania, Rena Katz and Estelle Straverg Hippolata, Betsy Wilson, Theseus, David Lipschutz, and Robert Schecter, Flute. Congratluations are due Miss Emma Mayer for the dance sequences which she helped to create, and Mr. Joseph Kertesz for his fine interpretation of Mendelssohnis orchestral accompaniment. It was the first time the orchestra had ever accompanied a senior play. There were over one-hundred fifty people work- ing to make this production a success, including more than twenty-five back stage committees. These committees and their chairmen strove to add just the right touches of color and realism called for in the script. This was the first time a Shakespearian play had ever been presented at Central, and it was the hard work and preservance of all concerned that made it the great success it was. As the house lights dimmed and the curtains parted, Centralites waited breathlessly for the class of January, 1955 to present their play. Heaven Can Wait, the hilarious three act com- edy, was presented December 9 and 10, and was a tremendous success. The play described the adventures of a prize- fighter, Joe Pendleton, who upon dying and losing his body, was none too anxious to go to heaven. The situation became more involved and humorous as the play progressed. Heading the able cast was Herschel Epstein, who portrayed Joe Pendleton, the fighting hero of the play. His sweetheart Bette was portrayed by Sharon Katz and Ethel Feldman on Thursday and Friday nights respectively. Since all good plays must have a villainess, Evelyn Luxenberg and Joanne Grossman donned the black cape and mustache and did superb jobs. Mr. Jor- dan, played by David Epel, had the job of heading Heavens working crew. His staff members in- cluded daffy 7013, played by Harold Eisenman, and the twin angels, Elaine and Eleanor Blau, who es- corted both the fortunate and unfortunate souls either to heaven or hades. The Senior Play involved a great deal of time and effort on the part of the whole cast, the di- rectors and the committees. The whole student body appreciates the fact that without the able guidance of the director, Mr. Clifford E. White, and student director Marilyn Glicken, the Senior Play cou1dn't have been the success it was.
