For three years you have grown here. You have made your friends here. Now you have come to the day when you can do without us. You will now grade your- selves. You will now make your own decisions. These decisions are new. They have never been made before. I have faith that you will make them-stand on them- and take your places in society with confidence and wisdom. Yours is a great responsibility for at this period in history we straddle two eras as wide- ly different as the Middle Ages and the Age of the Aeroplane. You stand at the threshold of the Atom Age -the Age of Miracles. As you file past at Commencement I cannot help but think, Someone among you may discover the cure for cancer. Someone among you may find the formula for peace in the world. In a democracy all of you are important- each has a destiny to fulfill-a home to build, a career to create. Toward this end I have faith that you will do well. Toward this end I bid you A Success and God Speed. MR. The Student Council is the student government in Central High School. It is the group through which the student body may express its will, desires, and its complaints through student representatives. It is the duty of each Student Council representative to report to the groups the events of each meeting. A special attempt was made to see that all groups were adequately covered. The officers of the fall term were: Elaine Braver- man wielding the gavel, Gloria Manela as Elaine's assistant, Eleanor Banks writing the minutes, and Phyllis Zager holding the purse strings. During the spring term, Ronald Horwitz presided and was assisted by Jerry Uzansky. Marilyn Frankel recorded the minutes and Oscar Glieberman took care of the fi- nances. With the aid and guidance of Mr. Benjamin Chinitz, sponsor, the council published a weekly bulletin which listed the school's activities for the week and were distributed to the groups. Flowers were sold at both senior plays and book covers were sold at the begin- ning of each term. A scholarship fund was created FALL STUDENT COUNCIL-Row 1-P. Zager, E. Row 3-N. White, B. Gamburd, A. At the beginning of each term the Council sponsors the Freshman Orientation assemblies to explain the activities and opportunities that are open to newcomers to the school. During the course of the year, this group helped the Parents Association with the Fun Fair and held an installation of officers and members during one of the assemblies in the auditorium. The Council also continued work on its handbook, which will be current and up-to-date, and will aid the stu- dent in understanding the activities and programs at Central. A lunchroom committee was organized to investi- gate the lunchroom problem and to send recommenda- tions and possible solutions to the administration for consideration. This group sent two representatives to the All-City Student Council and had the honor of having one of its own, Gloria Manela, elected as treasurer of the organization. We will accept all decisions of the officials. We do not utter abusive or irritating remarks or attempt to rattle an opposing player. We applaud opponents who make good plays or show good sportsmanship. We strive to win fair without boasting and lose without excuses. We ask that all players and fans help us live up to this code . . . and MAY THE BEST MAN WIN.,' The success of the Code and the Council can be proven by the fact that this is the fastest growing club in Central. From a starting membership of nine, the Council has grown to 250 active members. In the fall term, under the sponsorship of Coach Wilmont Sanford and President Rena Schrodeck, the club executed two student exchanges. The first one was held with Pershing High School, where the visitors were entertained with an assembly program as well as a tour of the school. The second student exchange was held with Cooley High School. Other officers for the fall term were vice-president, Ronald Hersh, secretary, Harriet Fields, and treasurer, Sybil Pudavick. Out of these activities, new ideas for improvement of Central as well as promoting friendly relations are devised. Central High School is a member of the Intra- Metropolitan Student Sportsmanship Council. Con- sequently, the Sportsmanship Council sends two representatives to the IMSSC meetings. The repre- sentatives of the fall term were Joan Rosenthal and Bill Stephens. The duty of the IMSSC representa- tives is to attend all IMSSC functions, the first one being the Kick-Off at Northeastern High School to open the football season. Central was honored by having bestowed upon one 'Lite, Bill Stephens, the presidency of the IMSSC for both the fall and spring semesters. During the spring term, under the leadership of president Ronald Hersh, vice-president Izetta Ray, secretary Harriet Fields, and treasurer Sybil Puda- vick, the Council conducted many events. Among these was Play Day, when everyone was invited to join in some athletic sport. New fi, X L.- P69 , X KS es 3 s' SPORTSMANSHIP COUNCIL-Row 1-J. Grossman, Row 3-L. Hurwitz, H. Amhowitz, S. Fourteen X FALL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, iiStucient Wins First Prize Where is one most likely to find mad confusion? Room 122, of course. Where is one most likely to find odd-looking characters running around tearing their hair? Room 122, of course. Why? The answer is quite simple. In this well-known room the school paper, The Central Studentf, is edited from the first rough draft to the final copy. There one can find the really quite sane and capable Central Student staff, striving to publish a better and more interesting school paper. It may seem like magic, when every month, the paper mysteriously appears. But to the staff who have spent many a sleepless night in preparation for the final draft, it is no magic, it's just plain hard workf' In order to have the priviledge of working on the Cen- tral Student, pupils begin to prepare themselves early. When they are in the 11B and have a sincere and enthusi- astic interest in Journalism, they address a letter to their counselor requesting admittance into the Composition QBJQ class. This is the first Journalism course offered at Central. In this class they acquire a working background in preparation for the time when they will become the edi- tors and reporters of The Central Student. Following Composition f3Jl, the students advance to Journalistic writing 125, where they finally get the op- portunity to try their wings and begin writing for the school paper. Usually, at this point, the students are in the 12B and wish to gain all the experience and knowl- edge possible. Their work is more conscientiously done and they are therefore ready to become members of the staff. Q K..- STUDENT SPRING STAFF-Row 1-J. Wendell, S. Row 2-M. Grodsky, M. Rachleff, R. Berk. Mad Confusion Brings Results I The editor-in-chief, as well as the various other editors, is chosen in a unique way. The past editors have a con- ference, and decide who the future editors of the paper will be. The students who are chosen excell in Journ- alism and therefore are able to give advice encoura e 9 g ment, and sympathy to their reporters when the time arises. Apparently, all this mad turmoil in room 122 pays off, for under the fall staff, the Central Student was awarded a first prize in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Contest, which is nationwide. Editor-in-chief during the fall term was Rae Jean Blatnikoff, news editor, Rena Schrodeck, feature editor, Helen Amhowitz, news-feature editor, Elaine Braverman and Janet Levenson, and sports editors, Noel Lawson and Art Levine. In the spring term, Winifred Ledger was editor-in-chief with Leba Cutler editing on the news-feature page, Rochelle Komisar editing on the news page, Judy Grod- sky on the feature page, and Harvey Berman on the sports page. As the school year ended and the staff departed for various points of the country on their vacations, they un- doubtedly remembered the good old days when their nerves were about to snap in the midst of cutting, pining, gluing, reading, writing, and talking, when they glared at articles which refused to be written, when they stared daggers into the backs of editors who had just killed an article with a sweep of their pencil. These will be their memories, but they will remember the pleasant things too, such as winning coveted awards, being patted on the back by an editor with a word of encouragement, and always finding their sponsor, Mr. Birger Bakke, will- ing to give a helping hand. Its purpose is To promote co-operation and understand- ing between all racial and religious groupsf' During its meetings, which occur every other Tuesday in the library, discussions are held and future activities are planned. Some of the past activities have included outings, skits, movies, speakers, and, in honor of Brother- hood Week, a program to which all students were invited. All of the members are students who realize the ob- stacle of intolerance and are trying to overcome it and promote better feelings among all people. At the last election, Jim Lafferty was elected president, Jo Ann Ivory, vice-president, Mitzi Rachleff, secretary, and Phyllis Ivory, treasurer. The able sponsors of the Unity Forum are Mr. Charles Merryman and Miss Orah Hahn, who do a great deal of work in connection with religious tolerance. The Science Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Alfred Otte- well, was created for the purpose of gaining that experience and knowledge which can be obtained through experimentation, which, in turn, suppliments that which is learned from the text- book. On the agenda for this group were trips to the Ford Plant, Great Lakes Steel Corporation, Parke Davis Drug Company, and Eloise, as well as a picnic outing at the end of the school year. During club meetings, besides attending to business matters, a great many activities and programs were held. They included demonstrations and experiments, movies, discussions, speakers, and the preparation and adoption of a new constitution. The requirements for joining this club are one year or more of a science, and a B average, or a recommendation from the sponsor, Mr. Ottewell, or from a counselor. Wielding the gavel this term was Sheldon Pringle, with El- morris Still as vice-president, Anne Klarman recording the min- utes, and Vivian Lieber collecting and allotting the money. 52 ' ,sq Row 3 - S. The purpose of the Spanish Club is to further students' practice and enjoyment of the Spanish language, and to teach them the culture of Spanish speaking countries. The club's program is varied. It includes games, skits, and activities. This year the Spanish Club Chorus made a recording of Spanish folk songs at WDTR, the school radio station. To add to the club's entertainment, each Christmas a pinata is made. The pinata is filled with candy and other treats, and after the hard task of breaking it, the celebration gets underway. The officers for the past year were: Laura Sarko, president, Phyllis Ivory, vice-president, and Rona Berk, treasurer. Upon the graduation of Ida Nader in January, Nina Sprecher took over as secretary. Miss Eleanor Brakeman sponsors the club. The Latin Club gives students a chance to meet informally, have fun, and use their knowledge of Latin outside the classroom atmosphere. With the able aid of Mrs. Bush, an enjoyable agenda was savored by all members. First, there were terrible but harmless initiations, including a trip to the lower world. The club held joint meet- ings with Mumford and Mackenzie, plus trips to the Classical Museum in Ann Arbor. The Ann Arbor visit included a picnic. . . I ' At the end of each term a medal ofaccomplish- ment is awarded to seniors -who have achieved all A's in eight semesters of Latin. ' Officers for the fall term were: co-counsels, Rich- Row 3-- F. In the spring, Alicia Margolis and Philip Berns took over as co-counsels, Sam Dorf- man became scribo, Barbara Simon was historian, and Helen Friedman was quaestor. Music, games, fun, and culture are the general fields of activity covered by the French Club. The purpose of the club is obvious: To carry on a varied program of French outside the regular classroom. Heading the club in the fall were president, Mar- sha Lowingerg vice-president, Winifred Ledger, sec- retary, Mitzi Rachleffg and treasurer, Gloria Manela. As the snow cleared so did the old officers and we found Mitzi Rachleff as president, Winifred Ledger as veep, Esther Schey reading the minutes, and Ora Kutnick collecting dues. Miss Phyllis Ward sponsors the club. On the term's list of activities was a French What's My Line? panel. A speaker from U. of D., Mr. Fleck, showed the club slides of Europe, which featured France. Among the other games, French hangman was tested at one meeting. Dominant on the list of activities were musical programs. The French Club has many up and coming chanteuses. All three clubs worked together this year to put on a complete language show. The show included French songs, the latest Latin-American dances, and authentic old Latin poetry. This language show topped off a highly successful season for the Lang- uage Clubs. LATIN CLUB-Row 1-A. Margolis, S. Na- Rcw 3-K. Darden, D. Cathcart, A. Levine, M. than, E. Averbuch, M. Schneider, I-I. Eisenman, A. Goldstein. only-two Under the direction of Mr. Clifford E. White, speech and dramatics teacher, his assistant Burton Schwartz, and Stage Mother Betsy Wilson, the senior class of June, 1955 presented one of William Shakespeare's most loved comedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Midsummerl' by Will, as the cast fondly called him, is a play of plays, combining the lives of three kinds of people, mortals, immortals, and workers, into one humorous theme. The principle characters of the senior play were: Puck, David Moscow and Nehemiah Pitts, Lysander, Burton Sirling Deme- trius, Gerald Hoshkovitzg Helena, Rochelle Klemp- ner and Lois Feldsteing Hermia, Phyllis Kaplan and Bluma Goldberg, Bottom, Bill Swartz, Oberon, Hadar Ctranaderg Titania, Rena Katz and Estelle Straverg Hippolata, Betsy Wilson, Theseus, David Lipschutz, and Robert Schecter, Flute. Congratluations are due Miss Emma Mayer for the dance sequences which she helped to create, and Mr. Joseph Kertesz for his fine interpretation of Mendelssohnis orchestral accompaniment. It was the first time the orchestra had ever accompanied a senior play. There were over one-hundred fifty people work- ing to make this production a success, including more than twenty-five back stage committees. These committees and their chairmen strove to add just the right touches of color and realism called for in the script. This was the first time a Shakespearian play had ever been presented at Central, and it was the hard work and preservance of all concerned that made it the great success it was. As the house lights dimmed and the curtains parted, Centralites waited breathlessly for the class of January, 1955 to present their play. Heaven Can Wait, the hilarious three act com- edy, was presented December 9 and 10, and was a tremendous success. The play described the adventures of a prize- fighter, Joe Pendleton, who upon dying and losing his body, was none too anxious to go to heaven. The situation became more involved and humorous as the play progressed. Heading the able cast was Herschel Epstein, who portrayed Joe Pendleton, the fighting hero of the play. His sweetheart Bette was portrayed by Sharon Katz and Ethel Feldman on Thursday and Friday nights respectively. Since all good plays must have a villainess, Evelyn Luxenberg and Joanne Grossman donned the black cape and mustache and did superb jobs. Mr. Jor- dan, played by David Epel, had the job of heading Heavens working crew. His staff members in- cluded daffy 7013, played by Harold Eisenman, and the twin angels, Elaine and Eleanor Blau, who es- corted both the fortunate and unfortunate souls either to heaven or hades. The Senior Play involved a great deal of time and effort on the part of the whole cast, the di- rectors and the committees. The whole student body appreciates the fact that without the able guidance of the director, Mr. Clifford E. White, and student director Marilyn Glicken, the Senior Play cou1dn't have been the success it was. Slwakespearian Comedy Presented JUNE PLAY-Row 1-N. Pitts, M. White, M. White, P. Ivory, H. Walking through the halls any hour of the day, one may usually hear music floating through the building. It comes from the third floor where the entire music department is situated. It may be the Central High School Orchestra practicing persist- ently until perfection is reached. Besides taking a large part in the Christmas and Spring Concerts, and offering selections between acts at the fall senior play, the orchestra performed a job which is unique in Central's history. Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Kertesz, it played Mendelssohnis music for 'KA Midsummer Night's Dream by VVilliam Shakes- peare, which was presented by the June senior class. The band is also sponsored and directed by Mr. Kertesz. lt too participated in the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Some of the useful information acquired is the classi- fication of all books, and the use of reference books. The staff of boys and girls receive an instruction period in Library Science before they begin working. In this brief period they learn, among other things, the location of books in the library in order to be able to find, when necessary, any book within its walls. Stamp- ing and processing books is also part of their job. Sponsoring the staff is Central's librarian, Miss Orah Hahn. The cagers ended the regular schedule with six wins and only three losses, and tied for second place on the west- side, along with Cooley and Chadsey. The first game of the season and for the new coach was a victory over Redford. The Blazers then lost their next three games by a total of ten points. They were untouchable for the rest of the regular season as they chalked up five straight victories for the second place tie. City-champion, Cass-Tech ruined the hopes of a Central championship when they defeated the Bla- zer hoopmen in the first round of the League play- offs. The team was led throughout the season by Bill Stephens who was picked for the official All-City team and was the third highest scorer in the league with an average of 16.9 points per game. The girls ushered at January and June grad- uations and citizenship assemblies, as well as cer- tain athletic events where they were needed. The two big events of the year were the Annual Letterwomen's Banquet and the Freshie Coke Party, when all girls are invited to participate in some athletic sport, in order to become better acquainted with the athletic program at Central. The officers during the fall term were: Winnie Ledger, presidentg Nancy White, vice-president, Ida Nader, secretary, and Judy Panush, treasurer. There is more to becoming a member of the C Club than wearing a Blue and White sweater with a large C upon it. The boys who qualify for mem- bership have put many long hours into earning their varsity letters. That is the one qualification required of all members. Many weeks of practice to develop the required skill go into each boy's preparation for a track meet, a football game. a tennis match, or any one of the eight varsity sports in which Central students parti- cipate. Each sport has different qualifications necessary to earn a letter, and only those athletes who excell in their particular sport earn the letters. Row 3-W. Blake, W. Thomas, L. Yovis, D. Abels, I. Once again, amidst the rustling of leaves and the sharp, stinging breeze, football made its way into the Central sports scene. And once again, the football field was swarmed with cheering, pennant waving fans as the Blazer team marched out with spirits high to compete against other prep schools. From the start the season was marked with injuries and bad breaks. In the Mumford game, which contained all the color and fiery play possible, veteran Alan Seel broke his leg, thus ending his football career. But a few rays of light managed to glimmer. Deter- mined and stirring play in the line by Noel Lawson earn- ed him a position on one of the mythical all-city teams selected by sportswriters and coaches. Outstanding on defense was Ray Hood, who played his last season with all his heart. The Blazer offense, which had trouble building up power, was sparked by right half back Ronnie Little, who ran right through Northwestern and U. of D. Touch- down Little also exploded against Redford to lead Central to their highest scoring spree of the season. Coach Don Fitch's difficult task of filling varsity grad- uates' positions will be lessened by the fine showing of some of the reserve players who battled throughout their schedule. Wimbush's fine performances ranked him high among his teammates and competitors. The speedy legs of Wilbur Hall and Douglas Talbot added valuable strength to the squad. Returning for his last season of competition, Bill Stephens captained the squad. Besides his leadership duties, Stephens starred in the 220, the 30 yard dash and the high jump. Desi McCurdy also tallied high scores during the season. Records tumbled as Charlie Brown broke the school mark for the 30 yard hurdles. The team was made up of new members with the exception of Winifred Ledger, Friedelle Schreier, and Brenda Hart. Winnie and F riedelle were co- captains of the squad. To play the game correctly, one must have speed in co-ordination, accuracy, and good judgment, in addition to a love of the outdoors. The new team showed pep and enthusiasm in practice, and also in their matches. In the first game of the season, Central lost to Mackenzie by a score of 1-5. Defeated but not disheartened, they came back to beat Cody 5-1. The new team members were: Wilma Bryant, Kay Darden, Helen Goodman, Paula Haberman, Jo Cleta Jackson, Miriam Linden, Phyllis Liptzen, Bar- bara Reed, Ina Sage, Linda Swartz, Shirley Thomas, Sylvia Wolfe, and Shirley Brown. Coach Don Fitch had his hands full as Central opened the tennis season April 28. The Blazers were bidding for their seventh straight east-side crown. Only three boys, Fred Imber, Sam Dorfman, and Captain Dave Abels were remaining from last year's championship team. Abels and Imber were the top two men on the squad in the opinion of Mr. Fitch. They played first and second singles. Bob Shulman was the number three singles man. The remaining mem- bers of the squad, all of whom played doubles, were Sam Dorfman, Billy Levin, Eugene Loren, Dale Schane, and Jerald Maltzman. As the season progressed, it was apparent that Coach Fitch had once again turned out a squad of some of the finest netmen in the city. The Blazer swimming team, handicapped by a lack of depth and support of student body, battled harder than the record book indicated. Stiff com- petition, though, proved to be too much for the aqualnen, who ended up with one of their poorest records. Inexperience was the emminent factor which led to this downfall, as few lettermen were on hand to provide badly needed strength. The loss of Jerry Greenbaum, upon his graduation in January, added another blow to the team. Returning from last season, Doug Dowler was one of the bright spots during the year. He, along with Fred Mumford and Lanson MCoy, stood out in competition to help the spirit and morale of team- mates run high. Evident was the fact that the team was composed Edinly of underclassmen whose training will pay dividends in the future. With mounting enthusiasm, these sophomores and juniors are looking forward to a more promising season next year. Because of the unexpected illness of their coach, Mrs. Clara Dierdorf, the Aquaetts found themselves working under a handicap this season. The high spirited team was forced to cancel its first two scheduled meets with Mumford and Miller. They went on, however, to play hostess to Cody, and Pershing, and finished the season traveling to South- western and Eastern. The girls finished the season with a total of no wins and four losses. Outstanding as an all around swimmer this year was Gail Bennett. Gail was the team's only diver, and also swam in back stroke and free style events. Other outstnding water babes this year were Helen Freedman and Nancy White. As usual this yearls team exhibited exceptionally good sportsmanship, and fine team spirit. Under the admirable leadership of co-captains Margaret White and Hattie Butler, the girls scored five wins against one loss. Stiff competition was offered by Cooley, Chadsey, Highland Park, Redford, and Mackenzie, however, they could not stump the fast and furious Blazerettes. The squad dropped one game to Western by the narrow margin of one point. Fine sportsmanship was again displayed through- out the year by the entire team. The Blazers started off on the right foot when they snapped a fourteen game losing streak by defeating Northern, April 27. Many new faces were seen on the diamond this year including these of Coach Van Vleck who was coaching his first baseball team here and Assistant Coach Michael Bellovich, a student at Wayne University who helped with the team. The number one pitcher was Jim Reilly who got off to a great start by striking out eight of the first nine batters to face him. The number two hurler was Ken Lifton. They were backed up by reliefers Burt Tush- man, Jerry Sage, and Louis Gibbs. The infield was strong and had plenty of depth. Fred Efros and Van Vahanian handled the chores at first base. Howard Cohen, Lucious Williams, Odell Smith and Gerald Newkirk were the boys protecting both sides of second base, and Team Captain Joel Lubin played third. This years outfield was fast and also able to hit a long ball. Jerry Gutman, James Branch, Gerry Rakotz, and Bob Steinberg were the boys who latched onto anything the opposition was able to hit out of the infield. The catching chores were handled mostly by Bob Brown who showed good hitting ability in addition to his catching skill. He was helped behind the plate by tenth-grader, Sid Fox. This years squad had all of the spirit of the teams in the past, but they showed a better brand of ball play- ing to finish with the best record for a Central team in three years.
