When Central's Sportsmanship Council was formed in l95O, it consisted of only nine mem- bers, now, in its fifth year, it has become the largest club with a membership of about one hundred and fifty. With the aid of its new sponsor, Mr. Wil- mont Sanford, and President Ierry Bernstein, Vice-President Evelyn Siporin, Secretary Bar- bara Bandler, and Treasurer Sheldon Kantor, the fall council sponsored a basketball-foot ball Pep Bally which helped considerably to increase school spirit. As a member of the Inter-Metropolitan Stu- dent Sportsmanship Council, Central's council had two representatives at all l.M.S.S.C. meet- ings. In the fall they were Carolyn Scott and Harriet Chodoroff. The council also attended the I.M.S.S.C. Kick-Off at Northeastern High School, which officially opened the Detroit High School football season. The student ex- change with Mumford High proved very in- teresting to all who participated. The spring officers were: Evelyn Siporin, President, Maurice Co- hen, Vice-President, Barbara Bandler, Secre- taryg and Ronald Hirsch, Treasurer. The purpose of the Sportsmanship Council has been to promote good sportsmanship and fellowship among the students and teams of Detroit high schools. In order to further achieve this purpose, the council has done its best to uphold and teach this Sportsmanship Code: We consider all athletes as our guests. We will accept all decisions of the officials. We do not utter abusive or irritating remarks or attempt to rattle an opposing player. We applaud opponents who make good plays or show good sportsmanship. We strive to Win fairly without boasting and lose without ex- cuses. We ask that all players and fans help us live up to this code . . . and MAY THE BEST MAN WIN.
