Generation after generation have passed through the doors of Education, while America was winning her independence, wars, and developing the Atomic Age. Meanwhile, youth has been hanging on the hinge of time watching, and waiting, waiting to put their finger into the pie. But they have not been idle: they have been molding the crust, working hard at making it firm and solid in order to hold the filling that waits in the future. The ingredients are made up of seasons of activities, sports, learning, and growing up. To many these are only memories. Tum these pages and relive this season's ingred- ients. Again . . . VIEW . . . The smell of burning leaves, voices, hoarse from cheering at a football game, seeing old friends again after the long summer vacation, all these are memories of fall. Such memories we don't want to forget and the fall Centralite staff has endeavored to keep them alive by putting into this book activities, pictures, and affairs reminiscent of our fall term at Central. Faith Greenbaum, Fall Editor-in-Chief of the Centralite, deserves credit for her fine job and hard Work, as do the competent editors who worked under her. The activities section was edited by Karen Lipkin, Sports by Eleanore Rudner, and Norma Porter. Graduation by Elaine Saltzman and Carolyn Scott. CENTRALITE STAFF - Row 1 - E. Siporin, L. With the aid and guidance of Mr. Ben Chinitz, spon- sor, and the Fall officers, who were Harriet Chodoroff, President, Bob Schechter, Vice President, Marion Glieberman, Secretaryg and Ronnie Horwitz, Treasurer, the council began its work by publishing the Council Bulletins which listed all school activities, and were dis- tributed to the groups each week. A committee was formed to investigate and offer suggestions on improving the lunchroorn, and suggestion boxes were placed in the study halls for all students. During the spring term, Elaine Braverman student body heard through student council presided and was assisted by Bill Stephens. Gloria Manela recorded the minutes, and Phyl- lis Zager took care of the finances. The new Central handbook, which was be- gun in the fall, was completed by the spring council and will be ready for distribution next term. At the beginning of both terms, the coun- cil sponsored the orientation assemblies to wel- come new students to Central. Student Day, when the students and teach- ers change places, was the council's last big event, thus completing a successful program for the year. The Council deserves much credit for the worlg they undertook and should be praised for tneir success. STUDENT COUNCIL - Row l - M. Gleibermern. Row 4 - S. Schwartzberg, I. Laferty. I. Greenbaum. H. Selling school and senior pins, school shirts, and ushering at graduation and Athletic events, were some of the tasks undertaken by the Girl's Athletic Association this year. Also included in the year's agenda were the Let- terWomen's Banquet and Play Day, a day devoted to better acquaint the girls of Central with the girl's athletic program. The G.A.A. has a permanent membership of twenty-four. Girls who wish to join the club send in letters stating why they desire mem- bership. The letters are judged, discussed, and voted upon by the organization, Without know- ing who its author is. The club feels this eli- minates prejudice. The club, under the sponsorship of Miss Ernestine Burton, has an executive board which selects the officers of the club. Other events on the club's 1954 agenda included a semi-annual Athletic Awards Banquet. This banquet is for fathers and sons honoring those boys who have earn- letters. C Club members have also sold school pennants and stickers. During the fall term Bob Brent served as president, Irwin Biegle as vice-president, and Bill Stephens as secretary-treasurer. The spring term brought loe Sterns as president with Harold Thomas to assist him. Once again Bill Stephens was elected secretary-treasurer. Coach Doc Sanford was especially pleased with the hard Work and Willingness to win of his harriers. Central's men placed filth in the west side league meet. Leading the harriers were track stars, Bill Stephens and Hal Thom- as two of the outstanding athletes at Central. Hal graduates this summer but Bill will be back next season to once again spark the Bla- zer cross country team. Letter winners were: Hal Thomas, Bill Stephens, Nehemiah Pitts, Herman Goldberg, Douglas Talbot, Benny Sol- omon and Art Leiberman. Who keeps up our teams' spirits when things aren't going right? Who are the girls who lead the school in blue and White with screaming cheers? The Cheerleaders ot course, and We salute them for the fine job they have done again this year at all our athletic events. This year the girls were led by Margaret White who did a superb job in helping to teach the student body the many cheers and songs ot Central. Sparked by the fine hard play of such names as Ioe Brown, Irv Biegel and Ray Hood, the Trailblazers made every game this season an interesting one. A good example of this was the Mackenzie game. Central trailed Mackenzie until about two minutes were left in the game when little E. Ersher. I. Wood, I. Rakotz. Ioe Brown slanted off tackle for a touchdown. Quarterback Irv Biegel's kick was good and the Blazers brought home a victory. Central's only non-league game was against a very strong Southeastern team which downed the Blue and White, 25 to 6. We were not only proud of our athletes on the gridiron, but were equally proud of the stu- dents in the stands, who at all times conducted themselves in a manner commendable to Central. seventeen H Ce fl X ai at gg trallebr lfles if li' I A. White, were transformed into polished ac- tors, and as the houselights dimmed on De- cember 3 and 4, 1953, Central's Auditorium became an imposing theater. Father Gilbreth, an efficiency expert, took ad- vantage of his large family to experiment with his time-saving methods. These experiments resulted in many comical situations. Ierry Bernstein, who portrayed the father, gave an unusually superb performance as did Eleanor Goldman who played Mother Gil- breth. The story was narrated by Frank Gilbreth, lr. and Ernestine Gilbreth whose parts were taken by Lester Goldstein and Marilyn Mutch- nik. The portrayal of Ann, the eldest daughter, by Iudy Fields is deserving of much praise and her so very typical protest of, Nobody in this family understands mel will not be forgotten, along with a magnificent supporting cast. Following an eight year tradition which has made them an outstanding Central Organiza- tion, the Unity Forum has again made this academic year's programs worthwhile and in- teresting. Realizing that Brotherhood is the only solu- tion to the crossword puzzle of world relations this club lays the groundwork among its members here in Central. The group is an out- growth of the Detroit Roundtable of Christians and Iews. It draws its members from the stu- dent body at large. Pupils of every faith and race join this organization. Their aim is to de- velop understanding between the different groups through education. Movies, speakers, and panel discussions often highlight the bi-monthly meetings. ln achieving the goal much time is allotted for open discussion, as it has been found that only through conversation can prejudice be erased. The organization works hand in hand with the Roundtable which often supplies speakers and suggestions. As an added project this year, the Unity Forum sponsored the Central Bible Club. Membership is open to anyone who is in- terested in joiningg the only requirement is that they attend Central High School. When Central's Sportsmanship Council was formed in l95O, it consisted of only nine mem- bers, now, in its fifth year, it has become the largest club with a membership of about one hundred and fifty. With the aid of its new sponsor, Mr. Wil- mont Sanford, and President Ierry Bernstein, Vice-President Evelyn Siporin, Secretary Bar- bara Bandler, and Treasurer Sheldon Kantor, the fall council sponsored a basketball-foot ball Pep Bally which helped considerably to increase school spirit. As a member of the Inter-Metropolitan Stu- dent Sportsmanship Council, Central's council had two representatives at all l.M.S.S.C. meet- ings. In the fall they were Carolyn Scott and Harriet Chodoroff. The council also attended the I.M.S.S.C. The purpose of the Sportsmanship Council has been to promote good sportsmanship and fellowship among the students and teams of Detroit high schools. In order to further achieve this purpose, the council has done its best to uphold and teach this Sportsmanship Code: We consider all athletes as our guests. We will accept all decisions of the officials. We do not utter abusive or irritating remarks or attempt to rattle an opposing player. We applaud opponents who make good plays or show good sportsmanship. We strive to Win fairly without boasting and lose without ex- cuses. A French Dinner prepared by chefs of Chad- sey High School, joint meetings with the Span- ish and Latin Club are only a few of the events highlighting this year's agenda for the FRENCH CLUB. Musical and Drama programs put on by the club and a guest speaker from Wayne University added to the interest of the organ- ization. During the fall semester, Al Engleman was Presidentg Iane Rosenzweig was Vice-Presi- dent, Ioyce Brown was Secretary, and Sey- more Manello was Treasurer. This spring's of- ficers had Al Engleman, re-elected as Presi- dent, Edith Supac as Vice-President, lane Rosenzweig as Secretaryg and Winifred Led- ger as Treasurer. Because of the able sponsorship of Miss Phyliss Ward, the officers of the club, and the many enjoyable activities undertaken by its members, the French Club has marked up ano- ther successful year. The purpose of the SPANISH CLUB is to increase its members' appreciations and know- ledge of the language. lt provides an oppor- tunity for them to use the Spanish Language outside of the classroom. The meetings are varied and include musi- cal programs and games. This year the mem- bers of the Club were fortunate in having a native of a South American Country speak to them at one of their meetings. Highlighting twenty sm: Row 4 - H. Fruchter. E. Kingstqn, I. The officers for the past year have been: President, Barbara Bandler, Vice-President, Artree Gray, Secretary, Eileen Kayne, Trea- surer, Iere Wendell. The sponsor of the Spanish Club is Miss Eleanor Brakeman. After completing another successful year, the LATIN CLUB, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Ethel Bush, holds the title of being one of Cen- tral's most active clubs. This year's activities took the students to Ann Arbor where, combined with a picnic, they visited the Classical Museum. They also visited Mumford High School, where they participated in a Latin, Whats My Line, panel. Other events were a Christ- mas Party, entertaining Mumforcl's Latin Club at an informal gathering here, consisting of a program, refrshments, and a tour of the school. At the end of the term students completing eight semesters of Latin and had mantained an A Average were presented with a metal as a symbol of high Accomplishment. A. reporter, is a phrase well recognized by all Central students. Each Tuesday of the week, Central- ites in both A. M. and P. M. groups are kept posted of the current happenings around the school. Announcements and other notes of im- portance are related by the P. A. reporters. During the fall term Golda Robner and Ie- rome Bernstein announced the week's events. They kept Centralites informed of S t u d e nt Council activities and club events. Golda was also a reporter during the spring term and along with Iudy Alzolon and Barry Levine presented the spring term news. Re- cently we have heard of the Music Festival and the Carnival Fun Fair. This year's crew did a fine commenda- ble job. Certainly reporters in coming years will have much to do to equal the outstanding work accomplished by all concerned. library staff serves all Looking for information for your history report or do you need help to an answer to a physic problem? Then do as many Centralites do-visit your school library. There are books on varied subjects and the Library Staff is there to assist any student who needs help in locating various material. The Library staff is under the direction of Miss Orah Hahn. While serving on the staff the student librarian must be carrying an A or B average. The school must be able to de- vote one hour a day to work in the Library for which they receive academic credit. Members of the staff do clerical jobs, pre- pare bulletin boards, and arrange books on the shelves. Aside from performing these va- rious duties they are taught to use reference books, the card catalogue, and the dictionary. The Central Students are very proud of their Library and their Library Staff who strive to make their Library one of the finest in the City. twenty-eight LIBRARY STAFF - Row 1 - D. Weiner, L. An injury to Harvey Komorn left Ioe Brown, Bill Stephens, Ray Hood and Bob Brown as the only returning varsity lettermen. After Winning three of their first five league games, the Blazer hoopsters found the going quite rough and failed to winfanother game all season. Lack of an experienced bench seemed to be the cause of the downfall. Bright spots in an otherwise mediocre season were Bob Brown, who was given honorable mention on the All-State team and Ioe Brown, who sank the longest field goal in Central's history. Exceptionally fine ball handling was exhi- bited by senior Bob Brown and tenth grader Doyle Cole. Coach Kammerer cited the Red- ford and Western games as the best played all season. In the Redford game, the Blazers trailed at halftime but came back to defeat an aggressive-Redford squad. The Western game was one in which the rebounding of the Blaz- ers was exceptional. The starting lineup con- sisted of Ioe Brown and Mel Miller, guardsg Ray Hood and Bill Stephens, forwards, and Bob Brown, center. CENTRAL'S SEASON RECORD CENTRAL 37 ........,.. First, they played excellent basket- ball throughout the year and provided inter- esting preliminary games to the varsity, and second, because of the talent and ability which they showed, Central is sure of having fine varsity basketball teams in the future. One of the players who is sure to make the varsity squad next season 'is' Ted Brod. Ted played first string center on the reserve squad this season, and developed into a fine pivot man as well as a capable rebounder. You cannot mention the reserve basketball team without making mention of their coach, Don Fitch. Although working with a limited number of girls, Mrs. Clara Deirdorf, girls' swimming coach, was again pleased by the fine eiiort and hard work of her team. The Central aqua- girls opened the '54 season with a meet at Southwestern and followed it with meets against Eastern, Highland Park, Cody and Western. Leading them enthusiastically through the season were co-captains Gail Ben- nett and Nancy White. Barbara Grant and Gail Bennett were high scorers for the season. SPRING EDITOR IN CHIEF Row 2 - Sharon Rosenthal, Co-Art Editor, Mel Lester. Sports Editor Absent - lane Rosenzweig, Co-Graduation Editor The best years of our lives are spent here at Central and as we turn the pages of the 1954 edition of the Centralite, once again these years can become real to us. The clubs, the various classes, the sports events, and the good times We've had can all be relived through the pages of our yearbook. ln the spring the editor's fancies turn to thoughts of deadlines, printers' fees, and how to turn out a fabulous Centralite. This year's spring staff has worked long and hard to make this an outstanding book and as We turn the pages it is easy to see that their labor has not been in vain. The Activities staff edited by Eleanore Rud- ner and Louise Glattstein will long remember the last minute writing of stories, the gathering of materials, and the fun they had pasting up pictures in their proper order. The Graduation Editors, Evelyn Siporin and lane Rosenzweig are the ones to receive thanks from the Seniors. Their job was to put all the grad's pictures and activities in the proper order and this was quite a project. Editor Mel Lester perfected the Work on the sports division and the Artwork seen throughout the book was supplied by Art Ed- itors Charlotte Meckler and Sharon Rosenthal. Presiding over and uniting the Centralite forty-six Staff was editor-in-chief Karen Lipkin, who pro- vided moral support and a helping hand to all. The Centralite for 1954, was planned as a book for all Central Students. There are things of interest for tenth graders right on up to sen- iors. lust as this is your school, so is this your book. A book to be proud of. We, of the Cen- tralite staff have tried to make this such a book and We sincerely hope it will meet with the approval of all Centralites. at Row 1 - F. Schreier, N. As the years pro- gressed, the paper moved with them, each one being better than the one before it. Season after season each staff struggled to make the paper live up to its reputation. But this story is no fairy tale. It wasn't magic that made the STUDENT what is is today. It STUDENT REPORTERS - Row 1 - R. Shrodeck, I. Levenson, E. Braver- man R Blatmkoff, H. Amhowitz. And so we embark upon the present and sit back to view the work of this terrn's spring staff. Picture, if you will, a room laden with shelves, papers, pencils, and typewriters. Lis- ten closely and you can hear the hum of voic- es. They belong to the new spring staff anxious to get the printers ink into their veins, eager to go to press, desiring to hold true to tradi- tion and put out a great paper just as their predecessors have done. And theirs was the success story of the season, for under the able guidance of Editor- in-Chief Sandy Schechter the STUDENT came through again. News was kept intact with the help of Co-editors Ilene Fishman and Barbara Sorscher, Feature was better than ever under the direction of Naomi Sherman and Ruthie Rubin, Co-editors of page two, News Feature was handled efficiently by Esther Margolis and Iudy Alzofon, and last but not least all Sports news and chatter came to 'Lites with the help of Roger Boesky, Sports Editor. And stan- ding by was Birger Bakke, the staffs inspira- tion through it all. The students relied on his wisdom and judgment to guide them. forty-seven forty-eight music makers achieve success Central's Music Department is a feature of Central High School which 'Lites ought to be particularly proud of. This year has been an especially active one for the department, even in comparison with previous seasons. Under the direction of Dr. Seitz, and Mr. Ker- tez, they have participated in many fine pro- grams. One of the highlights of the fall season was the music assembly presented by the Whole department. Soloists, the choir, band, orches- tra, and ensemble all combined to give Cen- tralites a good idea of what membership in the music department would be like. 6 F. - ' ts.-J if Many students were surely inspired by this program. The spring semester brought the presen- tation of a gala May Music Festival at the Art Institute. Participating were all members of advanced music classes. Radio is another medium through which Central's Girls' Glee Club and Choir were heard. The verse-speaking choir took all solo lines in a cantata presented at the Detroit News Music Festival, and the Boys' Octette was heard on an evening session of the Careers Unlimited program. Soloists performed at the Memorial Day service presented in the auditorium. Durfee Intermediate students had an op- portunity to glimpse into their future when Central's Orchestra and Band traveled , there to give a concert. lt is fitting that the music department should complete its season participating in Senior Activities. Each semester Seniors look forward to hearing the orchestra entertain at their Senior Play, as Well as hearing the choir and band at graduation ceremonies. lt is evident that Central's Music Depart- ment has filled a complete and successful year with programs and activities of which 'Lites can be proud. Coming years and groups have much to live up to. i 2 rg nd' CHOIR - Row 1 - I. Grossman, E. Iohnson, S. Reese, E. Green, I. Nader, K. Wirick. Row 2 - M. Comisar, H. Sippola, K. Tucker, I. Returning lettermen Harvey Cooper, Ioe Sterns, George Watkins, Napoleon Miller and Iim Reily, along with experienced pitcher and infielder, Mel Lester, formed the basis for this year's baseball team. Along with them were scattered sophomores and juniors to give Cen- tral a well determined and highly s pi r i t e d squad. In Harvey Cooper, the Blazers had one of the most aggressive catchers in the league. Iim Reily and Mel Lester supplied C entral with two pitchers upon which it could depend and fleet footed and hard hitting George Wat- kins provided a perfect center fielder. Long ball power and agility at first base was found in the person of Nap Miller, and in the versatility of Ioe Sterns, Central possessed a very desirable player. Coach Kammerer again inspired and led the team to a very suc- cessful and interesting season. fifty-two hit the dirt!! The girls launched an ambitious four week schedule starting April 27 against Cooley and then went on to face Mackenzie, Cass, Mumford, Northwestern, Northern, Wes- tern and Redford. Esther Margolis and Doris Applebaum were co-captains and inspired the girls throughout the season. V Along with a good team must go a good coach and along with Central's girls tennis team went Miss Burton, without whom the suc- cess of the team would not have been possible. NAP MILLER wields a big stick to supply the Blazers with much needed long ball power, while Catcher Harvey Cooper waits for the pitch from Iim Reily, ace leit hander of the Central baseball team. fifty-three linksters spring into action Q so GOLF TEAM - Row 1: E. Burt Schwartz and Donny Smith joined this group to round out the Central golf team. The captain for this season was Bill Lichtig, who competed for the third year on the team. Matches were held against Cooley, Cody, Bedford and Macken- zie, with Redford Municipal Golf Course act- ing as Central's home links. tennis team shoots for city title The graduation of Bob Brent left all- city star Chuck Widge Solomon to lead the Central boys' tennis team. With Cap- tain Solomon at first singles, Neil Flattery at second singles, and Dave Abels and ' Stu Sachse alternating at third singles, only the doubles teams were not fully represented by lettermen. Central's tennis teams have always been of first class cal- iber and this year's team was no excep- tion. Neil Flattery joined Chuck Solomon to give Central two candidates for all- city berths, in true Blazer style. Much credit must be given to Coach Don Fitch for the fine job he has done in turning out first rate teams at Central. ' I -- lt 4 if fifty-four , , , if f 1-j,,i, ,,r.,f , I Q BOYS TENNIS-N. MICHIGAN BELL TELEPHONE COMPANY A FRIENDLY PLACE TO WORK ezqhty four A 4? ,Z -5 if 1 Ever stop to think what the world was like before electricity became everybody's ser- vant? It's diflicult to picture! Electric power serves so faithfully we just take it for granted. Edison's incandescent lamp, heralding the birth of modern electric service, finally became more than a dream 75 years ago. To help turn this dream into reality, other men provided the finances Edison needed. Their joint achievement is an example of how financial risk-taking and individual ingenuity combine to the benefit of all people. But our present way of living is only the beginning. Electricity promises for the future still greater marvels and better service. It requires men and women with many skills to provide this service. If you would like to work with such people why not get in touch with Edison's Employment Office?
